Awesome video. Just upgraded to fibre and our provider gave us a wifi 6 modem router combo thing. It's way faster then our old AC wave 1 router. With a client that supports 160MHz channels I could get over 1 gigabit over wifi, and that's kinda nuts. Unfortunately it's now limited to 80MHz, because I have our old router in wds mode.

Gary, you already explained about the wifi 6 Plus on Honor Router, but can you please explain about Wi-Fi 6E ? is it the same or totally different? and which devices already implement Wi-Fi 6E ? Thank in advance ;)
@GaryExplains
@GaryExplains 2 роки тому
It is exactly the same, just at 6GHz rather than 5GHz. I haven't used or tested any specific devices. One problem is that only the USA has actually opened up 6GHz. The EU and other regions are still talking.
@GaryExplains
@GaryExplains 2 роки тому
@Tech Nerd WiFi 6E is specifically about 6GHz, not 5GHz and 6GHz. WiFi 6 covers 2.4 and 5GHz. Most consumer 6E routers will support 6 and 6E so you get 2.4Ghz, 5Ghz and 6Ghz.

Honor router 3 seems like a worthy upgrade for my house. I currently use the ISP provided ont/modem/router which only supports 2.4Ghz WiFi and it’s being a bottleneck for the 100 Mbps that I’m paying for. My problem though is how can I disable routing on my ont and only use it as a modem. From what I understand if I just hook up a LAN cable to the WAN port on a new router I’ll run into some double NAT issues. I’d greatly appreciate if someone could provide some insight into this.
@GaryExplains
@GaryExplains 2 роки тому
The Honor Router 3 knows about such scenarios. It has a dedicated WAN port which it knows will get connected to another ISP provided router. That is how I used it here during my testing. This page might help: consumer.huawei.com/ae-en/support/content/en-us15383589/

I use this router for almost half a year and it's a good router with basic functionality ( good for me since I have synology nas and don't pay extra for unnecessary stuff) but I feel that it's 5ghz range is lower than average.

I’m very enthusiastic about Wi-Fi 6 and what it means for wireless crowding. However, the problem will be adoption. It will probably be several years before my neighbors will replace their hardware, if ever. We have also seen with Wi-Fi 5 that many cheaper devices may simply not use the newer version to keep costs down.

If I may ask, can you do a Q&A where you check our comments for interesting questions about your vids. I've tried to research this but got no specific answer so I thought to ask you. When using the stock file manager on my phone to copy/move files to my desktop through LAN connection I only get about 3-7MBps, using FTP increases the avg speed but still around there. I thought I can get the maximum speeds my router can push but 24-56Mbps isn't really high for a LAN connection. What limits my speed? Any ideas?
@GaryExplains
@GaryExplains 2 роки тому
We are going to need loads more information if I or anyone else is able to help. What phone are you using? What version of WiFi does it support? What model of Access Point? Are you connecting over 2.5GHz or 5GHz? Are there other Wi-Fi access points in your area used by your neighbors etc. Any Bluetooth devices in your house? Where are you copy to file to? Your desktop? Does it have an SSD or HDD? What NIC does your PC have? 10Mbps? 100Mbps? 1000Mbps? Is there a switch/hub between your PC and the Access Point. And so on...
@Nayr7928
@Nayr7928 2 роки тому
@@GaryExplains That certainly is a lot of information. Plus the settings of both devices and the AP. I guess I'm gonna stick with the speed. Btw in your LAN tests, what did you do to test your speeds? I'll try hooking up a laptop with an ethernet cable and try different apps/devices to test my LAN.
@GaryExplains
@GaryExplains 2 роки тому
Why is it hard to describe you setup? I will only take a few sentences. Here is my setup as an example. I have a Wi-Fi 6 TP-Link router. It is wired over Gigabit Ethernet via a Gigabit switch to my PC which has an SSD and a Gigabit ethernet card. I connect from an Android phone over 5GHz Wi-Fi 5. There are two other access points near me, but their signal level is less than half of my main access point. Why is that hard?

@@GaryExplains Oh sorry, I was originally commenting this. I'm using a Poco X3 NFC, it support up to Wifi 5 like my current AP, transfer speeds on both 2.5 and 5GHz are the same, using a channel not overlapped by any neighbors, no bluetooth devices are on when the transfer was made, I'm transferring my files to the desktop (SSD) using the remote feature of the stock file manager of my phone, Link speed of the network adapter is 1000Mbps, there are no switch or hubs between the PC and AP as it is directly connected with a cat 6 ethernet cable and the transfer speed also does not change when I change the distance between my phone and the AP. AP is a combo, Arris SBG6700-AC (2yrsold provided by ISP).

Perfect. OK, so from an hardware point of view, everything looks great and you are right, you should be getting more than 24-56Mbps. To test throughout I use iPerf 3. You can download a version for Windows and Android. Set the Windows version as the "server" and then use the Android app (I use Magic iPerf). Testing with that will eliminate any odd things to do with the stock file manager or Windows sharing etc. It is also important to test with a laptop like you said. Use the Windows version to do a Windows to Windows test over Ethernet only and then try with the laptop connected to the Wi-Fi. To find the problem it will be a process of elimination. I had a similar problem recently and it was a defective cable, but it took a while to narrow it down.

My biggest question is. DOES THE SPEED OF THE INTERNET DEPEND ON THE ROUTER OR INTERNET PROVIDER. IF I have a slow Internet provider capped at 5mbs can the router improve it
@GaryExplains
@GaryExplains 2 роки тому
It depends on the internet provider. But the advantage of a faster router is that you can access devices on your LAN faster, e.g. a NAS.

Gary, when talking about MU-MIMO, please always mention the number of Spacial Streams; since this is the only number that really matters.
@GaryExplains
@GaryExplains 2 роки тому
But since I was the only person using the router then the MU-MIMO number is irrelevant. The router itself supports 2x2 MIMO as I state.

So many Wifi 6 Routers have gigabit LAN ports... Which kind of says it all. Surely they should have at least 2.5Gbps or better?
@GaryExplains
@GaryExplains 2 роки тому
Well, I am not sure about that. All my testing has shown that the bottleneck is the WiFi not the LAN.
@micksmithson6724
@micksmithson6724 2 роки тому
So what you are saying is that the 3000Mbps this router is advertised as being, will still not beat 1Gb wired?
@GaryExplains
@GaryExplains 2 роки тому
No, because that speed is a) for the physical layer without any protocol overheads or losses due to contention etc. b) in ideal conditions (i.e. in a lab not the real world) c) when the router and the device are just centimeters apart. The real world situation of actual data throughout is very different. That is why I have been making these Wi-Fi videos (this one is the 3rd in the series) and I have reported real world speeds in each and every video.

@@GaryExplains thanks for explaining that . I’ll stick to wired then
@GaryExplains
@GaryExplains 2 роки тому
PS. The 3000 is also the sum of the 2.4GHz throughput and the 5GHz throughput, so you would need a device that can transmit and receive on both simultaneously.

Accept this isn't the latest standard of Wi-Fi 6 ax. The new standard is WiFi 6E which goes into the 6 gigahertz band, so you can get even more lanes, and the routers have already started to come out now.... and WiFi 6E is already on new phones and tablets..
@GaryExplains
@GaryExplains 2 роки тому
Since 6GHz is not get open in many regions then from a usability point of view 6E is still very much in its infancy. I am sure that will change over the next 12 months. Out of interest, which phones support 6E?
@Displays.1234.
@Displays.1234. 2 роки тому
@@GaryExplains I'm talking about Wi-Fi 6E, it's on th latest routers, and it's on most of the flagship phones and tablets this year now, it makes absolutely no sense to buy a router which is only Wi-Fi 6 compatible...
@GaryExplains
@GaryExplains 2 роки тому
@@Displays.1234. As far as I know there are no actual phones that support 6E, just that the Snapdragon 888 is capable of supporting it. That is why I asked which phones support it.
