Oscar Duke, an NHS doctor with albinism heads to Tanzania and Malawi to discover what life is like for other people with the same genetic condition. Whilst in East Africa, Oscar explores the reasons why albino people are vulnerable to attack in these countries as well as interview some of the people who hold prejudiced views towards albinism.
Born Too White sees NHS doctor Oscar Duke, who himself has albinism, embark on a personal journey to discover what life is like for people who share his condition in these countries.

It's amazing how widespread this belief in magic is. I taught a student fresh from Malawi, and one day he told me that he loved being the US because he was able to show that he was smart without worrying. I told him that I was glad that he was happy here, but I was confused - why worry? He told me that in his home town if a student was very smart then they either were accused of having used witchcraft to steal their intelligence from other people (i.e. blamed for someone's mental disabilities) or a witch would try to steal their intelligence using magic. He then said, 100% serious, "It's great - Americans don't know how to do the magic."

@@ashleyhearts8561 witchcraft is real and it does work. Its just not as these people make it look like, you cant put a spell on someone who didnt allow the spell to work on him. There are witches who sleep with animals in the US and some who practice psychotheraphy with the help of their demon or drugs. Its not like its a secret or anything, people just dont want to explore the reason behind these issues, most people still believe hypnose is not real. I would never go to a witch or vote for a party that has witches on the higher echelons. Stay holy and seek the Spirit above all spirits, gets you and your children blessed. It's awesome that other non-albino Africans in the area are taking it into their own hands to protect and educate the albino children
@samaraisnt
@samaraisnt 5 років тому
but it's mostly because Albino people are still an oppressed (large) minority. All the people in any form of power, that includes advocates--were not Albino. That means that Albinos are not afforded power. The adult albinos he did talk to lived in extreme poverty. Notice that not one teacher was Albino, it's probably rare.

i literally am actually crying bc it hurt my heart to see a child who wasn’t just born deformed bc that’s one thing, but instead mutilated for some greedy killers & ridiculous beliefs, yet he draws so well & found how to adapt. that’s so lovely in its own way but entirely upsetting… i am in no way religious or spiritual but it’s like do whatever you want IF IT DOES NOT HARM ANYONE ELSE. speechless but not surprised there’s such cruelty in the world; no matter where. i wish i could like take every single albino out of that country, even move the entire community that surrounds them so they won’t lose those connections… if only. can the billionaires of this fkn world help do more actual meaningful things thanks !!! i went into this video not expecting what was to come bc it showed up in suggestions so i clicked outta curiosity & i was fine just observing until the drawing 😭 & just imagining the pain he went through during the mutilation is going to sit w me for a while

Why aren't European countries helping this discriminated and endangered demographic of African children? The U.N. prioritizes refugees, I would argue that Tanzanians both children and adults with Albinism should be given preponderance when it comes to refugees statuses and asylums. I was aware of the ophthalmic troubles of albinism, and the dearth of eye care in Africa generally, from working as a writer for the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Many of the eye surgeons I know have volunteered for eye-care teams in Africa. Your own work in Tanzania is so great. It made me cry. You were fearless to confront Fletcher’s murderer, who was, oddly, an astonishingly honest man. Dr. Duke, I really, really hope you and your wife decide to have kids. Lots! @BePro99 Look, man. I don't think people who've been oppressed, tortured and subjugated for hundreds of years by a certain group of people would like to take advice from them, especially in the case of ethics and morality. Sure, the people who've done wrong are dead, but the damage and scars they have left behind is quite unforgettable, no? As such, who'd want to listen to their subjugators' inheritors? How can it be a place for the inheritors of said oppressors to talk so high and mighty about such issues as if they know everything? Even today, Europeans don't even apologize for what they did, (some don't even acknowledge it btw) despite hoarding their palaces and museums with stolen goods? Who in their right mind would want to listen to such people?

just lost my dad to cancer 12 weeks ago yesterday. I found my brother dead on his floor from a drug overdose 4 days ago. I was my fathers care giver for 6 years, and did chest compressions on my brother until EMS arrived knowing he was already gone. I’ve often wondered if my brother and dad were able to meet in another dimension, if they truly found peace with their passings. Then today these NDE stories started appearing on my page. Thank you for doing these stories. These have helped me find a bit of peace for the first time since finding my brother. I now believe neither of them are suffering and battling demons, and they are truly free and in the arms of love ❤️

This is a valuable piece of work. Blessings upon the man who was responsible and those sufferers depicted in Tanzania. As a Westerner, it had not occurred to me this scourge was upon our earth. Having grown up with albinism treated as just a thing some few people have, nothing to judge them by, it was a shock. That loud musical notes sometimes played over when something is being said, could disappear without anybody missing it I'd suggest. I tried to understand what was being said a few times, replaying the segment over and over only to be none the wiser with just a loud horn like noise drowning all else out.

As a Tanzanian, I have to say that is one of the horrors about my nation that I truly hope will stop. This guy really did the documentary well, and represented the country in a fair light. And I like how he didn’t just say that this happens in Tanzania only. That’s the stereotype most documentaries with this subject like to portray. In Congo, malawi, and Uganda it happens too. As well as other African countries too. I like how he made the point to point out that reducing demand will reduce the motivation for people to supply albino parts.

Gaïa I agree 100%. As long as we hold on to illogical superstitions in Africa, we won’t progress as a continent. We of all people should understand the tragedy in the devaluing of lives, that’s the legacy of what was a great part of our modern history. Now to see that we can then find divisions amongst ourselves is simply disappointing. It just should not have started in the first place.

I have to also say how much I admire this young man, coming here and interviewing people, putting himself in danger and doing this documentary. What an inspirational man. Much respect.

It's insulting he compares his condition to black people...because of the Europeans invasion ions ago is EXACTLY why this condition sadly exist in the black race.

I remember in pre-school i had an Albino friend: me and that guy we did everything together and i would help him fight anyone rude to him: many years later i am watching this documentary and it pains me so much to see what these kids are going through.

Well done to Oscar Duke! One of the best and saddest documentaries I have ever seen. I was especially touched by that cute little crippled boy who draws beautifully. Oscar toured everything, did everything the world could know about these crimes and he did it great. The state of Tanzania must educate and inform the broad masses what albinism is and that cannibalism is of no use at all.

Jean P. G. I’d rather be her weight then have a disgusting and intolerable personality like yours. How do u know she is over weight? Even if she is she is still beautiful. Don’t listen to this bitter sorry excuse of a human Rae! You are beautiful!
