Footnotes:
00:32 - And just like Charlemagne had the Pope crown him for that extra legitimacy, Ivan went and got himself re-crowned by the Patriarch of Constantinople. But at least he didn't have the nerve to change his duchy's name to "The Holy Eastern Roman Empire".
00:37 - No, seriously, I can't figure out how Ivan went from being a neglected infant to the most powerful and exalted Prince of Moscow to date. Just a year earlier, his maternal grandmother had her two sons more or less running the show, and then suddenly it's Tsar time. People probably got on board with the idea because it put Russia on par with other great powers, but it's still unclear whose idea it was originally.
1:10 In brief, Ivan III made some rules about judicial bribery that weren't strictly followed, so Ivan IV enforced them harder in his Sudebnik (law code) of 1550 and also made this system where local representatives could take part in legal precedings. Look up the Sudebnik of 1550 for more info.
3:58 Now he didn't kill the whole town in the way that Innocent III did to Beziers, but he did kill a few thousand people, so it was more people than most people get to kill, but for reference the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre was almost certainly worse.
5:11 That music, of all things, was also the content of the first Soviet-produced CD.
5:18 For those wondering, it was a stroke, and supposedly he did die while playing chess with a friend.
Music:
00:00 Tchaikovsky - Festival Coronation March
00:43 The Romanovs - Kiss
00:50 Gray River Fort (Traditional Russian Folk Music)
2:58 Gray River Fort (Traditional Russian Folk Music)
3:44 Neil Innes - Score to Monty Python and the Holy Grail
3:46 Gray River Fort (Traditional Russian Folk Music)
4:51 Gray River Fort (Traditional Russian Folk Music)
5:02 Ivan the Terrible - Rodion Shchedrin Stikhira No 1
5:22 The Romanovs - Kiss

Ivan's childhood was really brutal, when he was NINE the metropolitan archbishop of Moscow was literally BLUDGEONED TO DEATH RIGHT IN FRONT OF HIM and his mother was poisoned!! not long after and people ask why he was terrible, he eventually got revenge on the nobles when he was 13 ......... @@bluemoondiadochi Actually, historians can't say with 100% insurance, that first Ivan wife was poisoned. Her sceleton remains was analysed in XX century, and it was revealed, that it is very high concentration of mercury in her bones. In those time different ink for makeup had very high concentration of mercury, and probably Anastasia just got too high dose of cosmetics, because she was afraid, that her beauty will fade away after child birth and her husband became cold to her. So, her death could be caused not only by hostile boyars, but by her own actions too. Ivan decides to leave and they begg him to stay only here you have the burning of Novgorod instead of the eclipse or maybe the eclipse is the time of troubles after his death. Ivan's wife is like Casca. And when Ivan assaults his is like when Guts shadow takes over and forced him to attack casca. Yes, I can confirm, "Grozny" (Грозный) means "Fearsome". But actually there's another version. The actual root if the word, "groza", means "Thunderstorm", so his nickname may be connected to the event of his birth - "Born during the thunderstorm". So he may be "Ivan the thunderous" as well. But what I can say for sure - is that "Terrible" is indeed the mistranslation. But I also have to admit - it do roll off the tongue nicely.

At the same time in russian folklore the tsar was typically described as an “ally and protector of the ordinary people". Most likely cuz he established Sudebnik, a revised code of laws. The Sudebnik of 1550 liquidated judicial privileges of the aristocracy and strengthened the role of the system of the judicial bodies of the state. Also the Sudebnik confirmed the right of peasants to leave their feudal lords. Plus add his achievment as a ruler - he doubled russian territory for only 50 years of his reign. He established standing gunner army - streltsy. He established the first printing press facility in Russia. So he may be controversal person but he definetly wasnt a bad tyrant. He was only trying to centralise the country by forcing church and boyar nobility to obey the state. Aristocratic dynasties became way too powerful during regency. After the coronation at 15 he started a political war agains nobility who was trying to strip him out of control over country. And ultimately he lost this war cuz his son had a title but all the power was seized by Boris Godunov. And after death of his son dynasty ended. During this dark times nobility had all the power to fabricate any historical facts and blame him in every shitstorm happened to justify establishment of new Romanov dynasty (This dynasty was chosen from boyars by boyars.) Maybe we will never know all the thuth about this historical times.

because most of the "bad" things are just propaganda of new people in power and every time the power changes new people in power start telling you how bad previous guys were and how good they are. And thus the cycle continues on and on. like look at Stalin. Most people know him as a tyrant while in reality only minor part of russia's population "suffered" from his "tyranny" while most of USSR was at the peak of economic and social growth. the moment he dies USSR goes into decline until it falls. Look at Putin. With all criticism towards him, during his rule Russia's economy improved tenfold, army revived from sorry state it was during the 90s, second Chechen war was ended, Olympics is Sochi, Crimea returned etc etc

It’s not that this was a bad video, or anything- however...You simplified quite a few things; you missed out the fact that his mother, his first regent was almost certainly poisoned by a cadre of high-ranking nobles when he was barely 8- & that he & the rest of his family were treated terribly by these usurping ‘regents’ til he came of age **8 years later** And his wife, who he’d married at 16/ 17 was **also** possibly poisoned, which brought back the trauma that surrounded his mother’s death- as well as the fear that she had been poisoned... though it isn’t certain.

What made Ivan IV "Terrible"? Mostly it was terrible translation (what a pun) of his nickname, witch doesn't reflect original russian "Grozniy", which is closer for fearsome, grim or formidable, it's kinda hard to translate it in one word. Most likely his nickname appeard from russian word "groza" which means - thunderstorm. Also he didn't had this nickname during his life, most likely it was given him only in17th century and we can't say by whom, but it was represented in folk culture. And of course neighbors gave him other nicknames, mostly with a darker or humiliating meaning, cause who likes neighbors especially in 16th century.
@emilybarclay8831
@emilybarclay8831 3 роки тому
The word terrible has two conflicting meanings, on the one hand it can mean really bad, disappointing or generally negative, but on the other hand it can mean something so great and powerful and foreboding that you are in fear and awe of it. The ‘terrible’ probably means more along the lines of terrifying and powerful than shitty

@kingkefa7130

@Rootless Cosmopolitan The USSR had antisemitic rhetoric and Stalin targeted Jewish doctors. Jews were denied the rights to emigrate outside the Soviet Union, just like almost everyone in the Soviet Union and its satellites. The iron curtain wasn't just for show, it was meant to keep everybody in. Jews were under the very same totalitarian repression all citizens of the USSR were, and in fact less so when you take into account the mass-killings of Ukrainians, Russians and other ethniticies in the collectivization period. And if Stalin lost the war, what do you think would've happened to the Jews in the Nazi-occupied Soviet territories? The same thing that happened to the Jews in Poland.
