TEDx Talks

7 років тому

NBC News journalist Mariana Atencio has traveled the world from Haiti to Hong Kong. In her TEDx talk, Mariana tells us how the people she's met along the way and her own immigrant experience have taught her that the only thing we all have in common is being human. Get ready to 'get human' and embrace what makes you different! Take a stand to defend your race: the human race!
Mariana Atencio is a Peabody Award-winning journalist, currently a national correspondent for NBC News and MSNBC. The Huffington Post called her ‘our Latina Christiane Amanpour’ and Jorge Ramos wrote: ‘Mariana is the next-gen voice for Latinos breaking all barriers.’ Mariana is known for combining in-studio work and high profile interviews like Pope Francis, with tenacious field reporting all over the world, covering youth-led protests in places like Ferguson, Mexico, Haiti and Hong Kong.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

I am a student from Vietnam. I often use TED as a source of learning, this time I do extensive listening. The speaker makes inspired for learning English from the listener and also for gaining the strength to become independent. They were inspired by the listener's speech and hope to one day deliver a speech on stage like them.

What an eloquent & articulate speech! Being able to imagine yourself beyond others see in you is the toughest part. Love this line a lot. I’m also a person who does the same thing differently which gives power to me for being creative & willpower is another tool to fight all the struggles come along the path. Success can’t beat anyone, if someone is determined & humble. On 12th November 2025, I will also speak in TEDx and inspire people through my life story.

I am a wheelchair bounded girl i can't walk but i am confident, independent and educated girl, at my early age i accepted myself the way i am, but unfortunately the society would never allow you to live with peace. Whenever i go outside shopping,or go to the restaurants or any other place people look at me like if i have come from an another planet! I can see sympathy in their eyes for me clearly. Some people come to chat with me directly to tell how much they feel sorry for me. That literally hurts. By the grace of Allah i am strong enough to deal with all this,i never let anyone to destroy my inner peace. But i feel for those people like me who are differently abled and they cannot face people's behaviour towards them. They lock themselves in their homes and spend the rest of their lives like this! I wish people could understand once that their single word can break/destroy someone's soul, their confidence their strength to face the world. I wish people see different people as social instead of weird.

Not everyone does! And I know I don't. I always feel comfortable around everyone (unless they seem sketch). I think it's because my third grade class had an autistic student. So if you look funny, or have a disability, it doesn't bother me.

Loujain Alghabra wrote "I went to USA and almost everyone treated me like a freak they either avoided me or was rude. I am a woman in veil and a proud Muslim" Uh-huh. And how do you suppose that the typical white Christian American woman, wearing jeans and a tight t-shirt would be treated in say, Saudi Arabia? I've traveled all over the world, and the first thing I do, long before I actually *enter* any other country or culture, is to research the norms, and make sure that I conform to them while I'm there, so I'm not causing them any friction. You should've done that before you came to the US, or at the very least, figured it out once you got here. Most Americans don't approve of women wearing veils for religious or cultural reasons. You should've left that back in the M.E., or not come until you got a clue about American culture. Instead, you decided to impose your personal beliefs (or more accurately, the beliefs you were indoctrinated into by men) upon a culture that correctly views such things as divisive and retrograde. And why are you a "proud Muslim"? Pride isn't a virtue (Muhammad warned against it), and having pride in something you were born into, or that was given you, is the shallowest of conceits. If you must feel pride, feel it in whatever you *accomplish* in life. But you didn't accomplish being a Muslim; all that took was refusing to think for yourself, and going along with what others told you to think and believe.

What stupidity, by God! It is incredible how they manipulate weak-brained people with beautiful words and emotional stories, so that they cry and do something predetermined, such as voting in the presidential elections! But the saddest thing is that they manipulate the society of the United States!!!, they treat them like animals in a social experiment! That is why Biden won, and that is why that country is weaker and more impotent every day! there are invading people who think they own the country where they are given refuge!! Venezuelans do that in Colombia and also in the United States! Instead of giving thanks, they go there to get rich and destroy the country that shook their hands !

Yea, but i can't do it in this country. I can't persue what i want. there are lot of talents here but it seems that parents won't allow their children to persue what they want. They like to hear that their children is good at studies, but not that he's good at something else and not in studies. Here education system is a factory where students study for their survival or they will starve, they study to get respect for not being disrespected and confronted by someone. here is no learning, but memorising it just to pass exams and get admission in good colleges so that they can be a middle class family that have access to basic demands for survival. i hate the whole education system here, you'll find teachers than anywhere else cuz here is no option after failing your dream exams..

I don't think the way that the speaker looked made a difference in her speech, presentation, and ability to grab the audiences attention. Regardless of the way she looked, her speech was powerful, moving, and captivating. I don't think Prijo Prijotte was saying otherwise. Prijo was just saying that beauty was an added value and that this could have attracted members of the crowd. Regardless, people attend TedTalks to listen and to learn new ideas or point of views, not to gawk or leer.

To be perfect, having no prejudices, no judgements of others, totally unselfish would be utterly fantastic but how many of us are! So lets keep on battling within. Unless we're perfect! Your experience, wise decisionsof ur parents and ur good heart was so much visible in ur speech. Everyone is busy looking for his own special traits as but what an incredible thought that underlined the whole session that we have to look for those special qualities in other persons also. If everyone does that then half of the conflicts will be resolved without any efforts. It was such a motivational speech.

Well said. I have embraced my weird personality a long time ago, since I was 16. Just decided that if someone is gonna love me, I need to know if they love the real me. And interesting enough, if someone hated me, they wouldn't be wrong. Because I'm me. Not hiding any of it. Weird, and will always be, who care, that's just me. And I love those whom hate me sometimes, their hate isn't a reason enough for mine. Anyway, loved your talk. It was heart felt. Simple yet profound. Best of luck dear.
