Elon Musk is a man on a mission. Quite apart from his tricky day job, weaning mankind off gas-guzzling automobiles, he also plans to drag our civilization over to Mars. And he wants to do it soon.
To this end Musk has been frantically developing a pioneering interplanetary vessel known as ‘Starship’, launching and iterating fresh prototypes at a frankly insane rate. But how does it all work, and what’s inside that giant shiny cylinder that keeps crashing? Today, we gingerly venture onto the long-suffering Boca Chica launchpad for a sneak peek inside the Starship.
During a recent interview with podcast host Joe Rogan, Elon Musk offered a typically smirk-inducing glimpse into the thought processes behind his signature rocket.

@Degenerate76
@Degenerate76 2 роки тому
Thank you, I was scrolling down looking for this comment. The whole concept of a fuel being more or less "weighty" is meaningless anyway if you don't take into account the amount of thrust that can be derived from a given mass of that fuel. The relevant measure is specific impulse, and hydrogen wins hands down if you look purely at the mass of the fuel. The problem with hydrogen is not that it is dense, but quite the opposite - its low density requires large tanks to contain it, the weight of which can often outweigh the benefits of its high energy to mass.

@@jimbojones101 1) The idea of growing up sounds terrible.... I'd rather be a responsible adult that's still a kid at heart 2) At the rate he is building these and the relatively low cost of doing so there will indeed be fleets of them going to Mars. It all comes down to whether they can build a crewed version. If they can, its a lock. Most people I know think they can, even if it takes another 4-8 years (instead of the hopeful 2 to 3). Given his immense wealth and desire to spend almost all of it on going to Mars, there's not much that can get in his way. But, as far as the fleets go - he signaled that they'd never send less than 2 crewed Starships at once. In addition, there will be several cargo versions that precede those and 1 to 3 additional cargo versions that travel with the crewed. So, the very first 'wave' of manned ships will likely consist of a mix of between 4 and 8 Starships preceded by another 1 to 3 that landed there 2 years earlier. The 3rd wave... who knows, but it'll likely be much larger if those first 2 crewed Starships touchdown safely.

It's actually technically true. Stainless steel in reality oxidizes so fast that the oxyde creates a sort of protective layer protecting from further oxidation. So basically what happens is that whenever stainless steel is scratched, that protective layer is broken, but it quickly creates a new one. However, highly corrosive environents, like the sea, WILL eventually rust even stainless steel, so depending on the upkeep and environment the metal will tarnish faster or slower, the seller might be right (depends on what exactly they meant...) What is most impressive about the Starship prototypes is how much it has achieved in three flights. At first, most people probably thought that the SN8 would explode one or two minutes into the flight because it was so new. But it managed to complete almost the entire list. And now the pieces for a soft landing are starting to fall into place. I'm skeptical that building a colony on Mars will solve so many problems for humanity, but I'm still enthusiastic about Starship.

They also need to get away from welding the segments together. The stresses on the stainless are too uneven after welding such long seams. Expand the edges with heat, press it over a ring. After the segment/ring temperatures stabilize; 3-layer rivet the stainless to the rings, then bolt the rings together. Unless it is a shared segment seam. In that case heat expand and press both segments onto the ring and then 3-layer rivet each segment to the common ring. This process has worked well for military rockets for a very long time.

@@shacklock01 i dont know about corruption (unless you categorise lobbying as corruption), but other than that the main REASON stuff happens like you say, is because of politics. Eg. nasa wants higher budget but wont get it unless this one governor votes in favor and this governor will only vote in favor if nasa will base some of their operations in his/her state thereby bringing jobs to said state. However, doing so decreases productive efficiency because nasa now HAS to work from seperate locations even when it isnt beneficial to their productivity. Now nasa will comply with the governor's demand because, even though their efficiency will suffer for it, in the end it will still up their productivity because of the budget increase.
