CEO and chief strategist of Quill Intelligence Danielle DiMartino Booth said the coronavirus recession creates an opportunity to fix the jobs skill shortage in the U.S. She thinks congress should invest in a reskilling program that provides educational opportunities to the already highly skilled employees working in the oil and energy industries that have suffered harshly from Covid-19. Booth also suggests addressing economic inequality by bringing back more trade based learning at a younger age, in programs like shop, and by creating ways for new mothers to not fall out of the workforce after maternity leave. Watch the video to learn what Booth thinks is next for the U.S. economy.

@@lonniejackson4225 never knew that's what a 'stereotypical economist' looked like. Who says those stock market missionaries are 'stereotypical economists' though? Economists are not supposed to be emotional supporters of the financial markets or politicians. Economics is a well established science. What you're describing sounds like an activist. Thomas Sowell and Milton Freedman are economists that come to mind so I have positive impressions of economists but can you provide examples of who these economists are that you speak of? I've listened to her book, follow her tweets, and watched a variety of her videos and I do note that there is a difference between her and the demons of the Fed but that's a separate issue from a stereotypical economist.

I like it when economists such as Danielle are being pragmatic, taking into balance the right balance of government involvement and private enterprise, because both are part of the solution. The sentiment that divides this county between red and blue has prevented us from solving health care and labor and education issues.

I would hate to go through life one and only once, and missing the experiences of Art and Music. Music can make you far more money than any vocational training. And one problem now, is people don't know how to think outside their work and therefore must depend on others to think for them. Nothing wrong with learning a living, but why do 7 of the top CEO's in America have Philosophy Degrees? Because the higher you climb, you need to understand far more than rote job duties. Just a thought.

The bigger problem is a child, especially when young, needs their mother and/or father, not somebody else who gets paid to be there for them and multiple other children at the same time. There was a time 50 or so years ago it was easy to raise a family on one wage. It is the system which is the problem, slowly destroying people's purchasing power and way of life, with all the benefits going to very few. It's sad people like Danielle, who I'd consider to be one of the better ones, can't even see that.

I’ve been saying this the last couple of months. The Education system is failing our youth by not providing the knowledge and skills. All schools should have a technical program. It’s unfortunate, but a college degree no longer promises financial stability, yet kids are going to school and they or their families do not have the means to pay for the education. Not everyone is eligible to receive a full ride scholarship. Student loans have crippled many and add car loans, housing, childing care, and food. Most don’t qualify for welfare such as Children’s Medicaid because the government considers meager wages over the gross income limit, so add healthcare. This is America, those who are able and are working and paying taxes should not have to through this. The side effects of a individuals and families having to live this way is tremendous and dangerous. I’m sure Drug and alcohol abuse, domestic violence, child abuse, homelessness, and human trafficking are some of the side effects of these things thing

… Finally someone with a true global view. Some thoughts 1. Governments should not spare any budgets on developing education. This is the only thing that matters along with physical and emotional health. 2. In parallel, learning about nutrition and healthy habits will develop generations of healthier humans who will need less the hospital systems. 3. Supporting remote-work - when done properly is great for family time and family balance - I live in Paris. 4. . I see empty villages , they need to be renovated and they will be populated soon. There is lots of green to be enjoyed. 5. I work with China and Africa. Things have shifted already in China supply-chain. 6. It’s a negative landscape but it needed to be done. It’s no longer a disruption. It’s ruptured already. 7. In France corporate raises and bonuses have been going on in m0st large companies . It’s blindness. 8. Today the smart news channel had a highlight. “How long could France budget still last.” The 2021, budget was released today !! 9. With masks on everywhere here, nowhere truly to go, placed strategically behind dark curtains to enjoy the light indoors and avoid the cold, one has nowhere to go except “inside”. Reshuffle, rethink and realize how much there is to learn, to create , to imagine , to dream. Social time is over for a while. We as a society are in a meditative state to create a new Renaissance. And this brings me Bk to point 1. Education. The basis of growing consciousness.peace. A better world.

Taking moms out the workforce should not be a problem if they are married to men who have the skill set to continue to increase his pay. No addition special gov. program or child care relief is needed when families can temporarily rely on the man's/husband's income. Efforts should be taken to increase the skills of the primary earner to earn more and also for when the mom returns to the workforce.

I disagree with Danielle on one subject she brought up. Immigration should not be allowed to reopen until our country has an opportunity to regain some footing and concentrate on those that are already here. Whether it be with education or immigrant foreign workers. Once they arrive here, they usually plan to stay indefinitely instead of taking their education and new found skills back to their country of origin to help their own people flourish. Any future immigration, must be considered temporary and not permanent at this current time. For the gates need to remain closed for now until we can play catchup on what production the U.S. has already lost. Perhaps Danielle would like to trade her skills in another country and take part in a foreigner exchange program herself before offering up our futures without discussing it first with the American people. Everything else she discussed I am on board with. Thank you.

Utopian dream, the HR departments across the great land don't want to spend a DIME on training, apprenticeships etc, they want to hire the person they feel fits the bill exactly. Look at H1B visa program, if they were hiring and training people to fit their business we wouldn't need all the imported employees we have. It's always somebody else's responsibility to cross train the employee. American companies have gotten far to comfortable with the "Hit the ground running" way of hiring. yes you should be smart and teach able, but nobody is going to have done precisely the same function in the same form as the hiring company expects..

The decline in the US position worldwide in manufacturing, AG products, high tech, vehicles and every other category -- except pretty much one --since 1990 is astounding. There is only one significant metric I can find where we are still way out in front: Among countries with greater than 100M population, our per capita GDP is 6X the nearest country. (You have to eliminate the small countries, otherwise you end up with Luxembourg and Switzerland in the lead because of the concentration of wealth and small population.) One thing I noticed -- since Trump is saying he's making a big difference -- I wanted to know if the rate of US decline since 2016 has changed at all? I don't see any change. We are continuing to lose ground to China at about the same rate. COVID is undoubtedly making the numbers even worse. Just as an example, the production of Aluminum in China is now more than 30X the US. In 1990, the US was outproducing China by a factor of 6. It's similar across the board -- even in most AG products. We still lead just barely in corn and soybeans. China's wheat production is almost 3X ours. China is having us for lunch. And Trump hasn't changed that.

The U.S. economy strength comes from diversity in interest. To minimize something like the arts is to stifle ones path which contradicts the very reason why our economy thrives on that same strength of diversity. Having an array of skills is great but to single out the arts as a means of unviable "skill" is clearly near sighted and unaware ignorance of the subject matter and the vast opportunities in the arts.

No, thank you. Innovation and shedding the deadweight of unregulable industrialists with their faulty concerns, would greatly increase America’s viability. Seems to me there is a built in war on acumen, which has depleted our capacity to renew our governance and businesses. We don’t need “Frenemies,” we need trade partners; if we are so concerned about imbalances, perhaps we should not seek to illuminate those departments of our government that where created to address such things.

Easier said than done with a substantial part of a workers pay spent on medical insurance and commuting costs. They are missive. It's why most American live way past their means. It's not their fault, it's the social economic dynamics of the working and living in the US. It's even more severe if you are working class vs working in a very high end job. Germanys major advantage is a tax payer equalized medical system so no one has to be left footing a really massive bill or going bankrupt over getting sick or injured. Keep in mind workers in Germany are treated and compensated more honestly because most of their jobs are unionized and have good labor organizations. Something that is aggressively hunted down and eradicated in the US.

@@duckmasterflex Have you ever heard of the Belt and Road Initial ? The PRC is making the 3rd world countries to become better themselves that the U S and Western European can't imagine. As the President of PRC, Xi Jinping made remark when he visited Mexico in February of 2009, "there are some bored foreigners, with full stomachs, who have nothing better to do than point fingers at us. First, China doesn't export revolution; second, China doesn't export hunger and poverty; third, China doesn't come and cause you headaches. What more is there to be said? "

TheMiddleKingdom Haha you really think the Belt and Road initiative is done out of pure benevolence? It is a strategy for globalizing their economy. I’m sure the Uyghur muslims in concentration camps, the camps in Tabet, the the journalists in Hong Kong, and the people in Taiwan are glad to hear that China is doing some real good in Africa.
