What's the Best Gaming Laptop Display? Mini-LED vs OLED vs IPS

It's time to settle the debate over which display is the best for gaming laptops. Every year we see new options with OLED, Mini-LED, and standard IPS displays, but it's hard to know what's best until you've seen them all in person. Is mini-LED blooming always bad? Does the dimming algorithm change everything? Is OLED going to burn in? Does IPS look dull?
In this video, I've done my best to use my camera's settings to demonstrate the vibrance, contrast, and brightness that you can expect from each of these screen technologies, as well as their pros, cons, and quirks. While only the human eye can see all of these differences at once, I think this will at least highlight piece-by-piece what is unique about each display type.

I believe the "screen door effect" you're referring to on OLED displays is what's known as PWM (pulse width modulation). Lots of people have had issues with that due to causing eye strain and headaches.
@JoshCravesTech
@JoshCravesTech 3 місяці тому
No, it’s actually from the touch screen digitizer layer of the panel. PWM can also be a headache on some OLED’s for sure though, but what I’m referring to is specifically only on touchscreen OLED’s, they have this screen door effect issue. It almost looks like there’s a semi-transparent netting over the screen but only on bright/white backgrounds. It’s not a moving flicker, but more so a static element.

Hey @joshcravestech , First off thank you for the wealth of information. Secondly, I really appreciate you mentioning the toggle between the multi-zone dimming on the Asus laptops but I'm curious; my primary concern with the (Rog series specifically) IPS panel laptops is the backlight bleeding and hotspots around the edges. Would disabling the multi-zone dimming essentially be an IPS like display but eliminate that edge bleeding? I'm assuming yes based on your info because it's not an edge lit panel? For me limiting that bleeding and unevenness is more important than deeper/richer blacks so that would be primary reason to switch. Would very much appreciate any info on that! Thank you again!

I wonder how easy it is for those oled panels to burn-in. I really like oled panels in general as they're on my phone and my tablet. But tbh I mostly replace my phone and tablets within 2-3 years so I've never experienced the burn-in. Reason I'm asking is because I'm interested in getting those new Zephyrus G14/G16. @JoshCravesTech
@JoshCravesTech 3 місяці тому
I’ll think about it, thank you for the suggestion! But honestly all of these would absolutely be amazing for music production for years to come. Music production is mostly reliant on the CPU with some VST plugins needing a bit of GPU power to operate smoothly, so Intel will always have a slight advantage in most cases. But the second you unplug, then AMD has the advantage. So it really comes down to the other aspects of a laptop that you prefer to have such as portability, battery life, display, keyboard/trackpad, etc.

Yes, most miniLED and OLED laptops use PWM for controlling brightness. The PWM frequency on the mini-LED laptops shown are MUCH higher than the range of being noticeable, so even people who are sensitive to it would likely not notice. However you have to be careful with some OLED laptops. A lot of people love the Legion Slim 14” OLED for example, but it has a low PWM frequency of only 240Hz which will definitely be noticeable and may hurt your eyes.

@@rkymtnchi503 yeah all good! But yes I’m VERY happy to see Gsync in a few of these 2024 panels. Finally!

People claim manufacturers are now confident about OLEDs to be releasing them on all new laptops in 2024. But, maybe all they care about is for them to work for only 2-3 years because then they burn-in + warranty is over + and it's "already time to upgrade to a new rig" by their terms....?

Yep, I’ve had this thought as well. It’s hard to 100% trust it!

@@JoshCravesTech Man, I'm using After Effects..with a constant UI menu being idle in screen for hours each day. These brands are nuts! Problem is- it's just hard to find a fully fine system now. It's either high specs, yet crappy battery life (YOGA Pro 9i)....Or, it's lower capped specs with new solid chassis (2024 G14 limited to 32GB+4070...+OLED risk)... It's super tough to make a choice, man...

Hi, can anyone help a non-tech person to choose the best display panel for photoshop on a Windows laptop please? I'm using an old HP Omen 17.3inch LCD IPS laptop at the moment but I need to buy a new laptop 17.3inch or above. The variety of screens is baffling me, I'm quite happy with the IPS LCD one that I have. So there's a lot of LED screens around now, some are QHD some are FHD, I've seen demonstrations on UKposts of blooming with LED panels which puts me off. I can't afford an OLED anyway. Anyone help please?

Considering how MacBooks have moved to mini-LED, I’d say that’s the future for sure. Like I show in the video, you can always turn the dimming algorithm off on Asus laptops and it becomes just a really bright, accurate, and punchy IPS panel. I have an OLED external monitor that I will use as a reference for black levels when I use Photoshop/Premiere Pro, but it’s not that necessary to do.

One big thing ignored in this video is battery consumption with each of these display technology. I am sure IPS would win hands down if that criterea goes into play.

Ehhh.. while mini-LED does use a bit more battery, the difference can be small, especially if you’re in dark mode. And same with OLED. The 2024 G14 and G16 are proving to be extremely efficient and giving equal, if not better battery life than their previous models

I recommend buy a IPs only because it cost less and then buy a monitor with oled 4K it will be less than the oled laptop

The MacBook’s display is better but it has slow response times so it’s not good for gaming or anything needing quick responsiveness

Hi Old man, I just found out...I asked a man to make a camera on the screen of the legion carbon i9 miniled pwm!4090 32 ...there are lines on the left, but I don't know exactly what percentage a person measured with a camera instead of a sensor, but the poles are coming....(((like you said, there's a fucking shim...I will not take over this shit is very harmless, I will buy the sensor now just far away...and it is necessary to check the hardware so that the percentage is... shim fucking...and there is no one else to do it...this is a trick....((pwm is more than 3_5% very bad thank you .Go on, it's VERY COOL.
