❌ Terminology around routers and access points can be quite confusing. I'll describe the difference, how they relate, and why the differences matter.
❌ Router vs. access point vs. wireless router
* A router is an intelligent device that routes data to and from the devices connected to it and often serves as a firewall and central connecting point to the internet.
* A wireless access point provides wireless access to an existing network, nothing more.
* A wireless router combines the functions of a router and a wireless access point into a single device.

Related but different terms often used incorrectly.

Thanks for yet another good video Leo. Another common terminology confusion is that a normal retail domestic router is strictly a router modem and differs from a simple router.

What about a modem? Does it come separately or is it built-in in the router AND/OR wireless router these days? (I'm assuming it is)?? Thank you

Good point. I should add that next update. Modem converts whatever signal your ISP gives you (cable, DSL, whatever) into ethernet. Sometimes it's a separate single-purpose box, sometimes it's built into the router.

Leo, I'm looking to hook up my computer. What is the best company to go with. I'm eliterate when it comes to this stuff any more and I need to learn. I'm still teachable but have not been on a computer in 10 yrs. Someone told me to bye a roku and that did nothing. You need a router. I'm disabled and income is very limited. But feel like I'm being left behind in this world. Please help lift my brain fog. Thank you, C.C.

would you be able to connect a wireless access point to a wireless router via Ethernet cable or would it have to be connected to a normal router for it to work?

IT depends on the specific devices involved. All I can say is maybe.

what if we try to use two wireless routers on the same network? What will be implications of that?
@askleonotenboom

Two ROUTERS will potentially cause confusion. A router plus a wireless access point is what most people want.

Wired router and standalone wireless access point is significantly cheaper than a wirelessrouter.

What's different between wifi router and wireless router
@askleonotenboom
@askleonotenboom 2 роки тому
None. Wireless usually means Wi-Fi, and vice versa.

I think he's using router and modem synonymously. You connect a stand alone wireless access point to a modem
@askleonotenboom
@askleonotenboom 2 роки тому
Nope. Once again, a modem and a router are two different things. SOMETIMES they're in a single box, but that doesn't mean every modem is a router (or vice versa).
