Midway on June 4, 1942 was a decisive battle of the Pacific War. Lt. Richard Best is in Squadron Six(VB-6) of the USS Enterprise Air flying an SBD Dauntless bomber. The Americans are going up against the mighty Japanese fleet also known as the Kidō Butai. On this day, Best and his SBD Dauntless will take part in the sinking of 2 of the 4 Japanese carriers lost in the battle. The Akagi went down as a result of Best's accurate bomb drop and his was one of four bombs that saw the end of the Hiryū. The loss of these ships was a shattering blow for the Japanese High Command

There were so many crazy coincidences that lead to the devastation of the Kidō Butai, and if only a single one of those coincidences didn't happen the outcome could have been vastly different. Mad respect to the airmen who fought over Midway that day. This battle was the turning point of the war in the Pacific. I highly recommend checking out a 3 part series by "Montemayor" who goes into full detail of all the events that led up to the American victory at Midway.

Indeed, this video looks really cool but it's a very oversimplified version of the Battle of Midway, no Story of the USS Nautilus that tried to hit a Japanese ship first but missed and got spotted, resulting in Arashi breaking off from formation to deal with the Nautilus, then trying to catch the Kido Butai which is then spotted in the video, Japanese that have a quarrel within their ranks to switch their aircraft for anti-ship battle or keep up with attacking Midway as they realize US Carriers are on the area much faster than anticipated, resulting in many armaments left unattended and prime to attack, Japanese bomber following the returning of US aircraft so they can track Yorktown or the incredible feat of Yorktown crew that patch the ship really fast that the 2nd Japanese attack think she is a different ship.

@@jamesricker3997 They had enough CAP up where that shouldn't have been an issue, but they were over zealous and focused in on the first wave of torpedo bombers. Which resulted in them dropping altitude to dogfight. So when the two waves of divebombers appeared, there was not enough time for the fighters to regain altitude to intercept. I won't deny that the ammo load wasn't an issue, however it was definitely not the reason the two waves of divebombers were unopposed.

The success of the dive bombers at Midway was a stroke of wild fortune; the defending fighters were so busy defending the carriers and ripping apart torpedo bombers, they didn't have time to react or climb to meet the dive bombers. Plus, the reason the bombs were so effective is that the Japanese were in the middle of rearming and refueling their fighters from the ground assault on Midway Island, so when the bombs detonated, the explosions were exacerbated by all the munitions and fuel active on the flight deck. Edit: What else made this battle so nuts is that the Japanese kept running into issues; there was the dilemma of the fighters returning from the island ground assault needing to refuel and rearm vs the defending fighters also needing to land for those reasons, and there's also the Japanese pilots mistakenly thinking they had sunk the Yorktown and erroneously assuming they had been damaging multiple carriers. Really, the Battle of Midway is an excellent showing of why Japanese military doctrine was inevitably going to lose to American military doctrine.

Something to think about as far as the Battle of Midway goes: Akagi took what was essentially one well placed bomb it, and was rendered a total loss Yorktown took 3 bombs, was repaired, then took 2 torpedos and still didn’t sink. Had the submarine I-168 not come later and struck her with 4 more torpedoes she probably would have survived. One thing that I think cannot be forgotten about this battle: while several waves of US aircraft attacked the fleet and were destroyed with negligible damage done, every one of them kept the Japanese from being able to rearm and launch their next wave, and each one forced Zeros to dive down and pursue. He said to the Imperial Japanese Command that he could guarantee victory after victory for the first six months following the attack on Pearl Harbor, but saw only uncertainty after that. SBD was a good dive bomber, but by 1942 it (similar to pretty much all other US naval aircraft) was pertty obsolete. Yes, they had their good days, but helldivers were better because they could carry more bombs, had more powerful guns, could carry a torpedo and were much more durable. But when we talk about SB2C we have to keep in mind that F6F and F4U were found to be capable of delivering comparable bombload, but much more versatile in self-defence. And the #1 dive bomber is pretty much undisputabely Ju.87. That aircraft was so successful at its golden times that even 80 years later when the plane in the movie dives down, it emitts the sirene noise (LotR's nazguls were a reference to the stuka dive bombers because Tolkien lived in london during Battle of Britain). No need to say that that noise was emitted only by Ju.87 in a dive.

Their attacks kept Nagumo distracted and unable to launch his aircraft. Not to mention they're the ones who took the brunt from the Zeroes so when the dive bombers attacked they faced almost no resistance because the fighters are already low on fuel and ammunition and needed to land.

The Battle of Midway was the begining of the end of the Imperial Japanese Navy. The IJN was still better in many aspect, mostly in night fighting, and the Shoukaku and Zuikaku was still out there hunting the USN carriers. Also, admiral Yamamoto ordered two light carrier from North to reinforce the Hiryuu, after the destruction of the other 3 carrier, her sitership, Souryuu, the battleship origined Kaga, and the battlecruiser origined Akagi. If I'm right Yamamoto ordered the Zuiho and the Shoho to Midway, but the battle was lost before they can reach the battlefield. (2 - 4 day long journey)

Awesome video. Absolutely amazing. Something however that I would like to point out that I really wish you guys would have covered it that this would be Richard Best's last flights. On the way to find the carriers the first time his oxygen tank would be found by him to be a bad mix, and it would tear up his lungs. His rear gunner would tell him that they needed to return to the Carrier, but he would deny this, and fly on. It's one of the biggest sacrifices ever made from a pilot in history. Something else that Is part of this is that Best is one of only 2 men in history to be credited for sinking 2 carriers In 1 day. Still a amazing video, but definitely a lot of information was missed out on
