It's yet another new-iPhone week, where "new" means ... a different kind of green. So what better time to take a trip back to 2004: when choosing between touchscreen versus stylus, trackwheel versus keypad, even slab phone versus flip phone … required no choice at all. Re-introducing the Sony Ericsson P910: one of the original "smart" phones!

Had a plumber come by in 2006 who had one of these while I was still a teenager and I thought it was cool that he used it to manage all his work appointments and basic business stuff. I much preferred the HP iPAQ I had at the time though as it had a bigger screen and more games. Things I really liked at the time. Although it made me really want a PDA with phone abilities hahaha.

iPAQs probably deserve an episode of When Phones were Fun although they are technically not phones, they can be turned into a phone via a module. They are the wildest implementation of modularity together with Handspring PDAs. I remember I had an iPAQ (one of the 5500 series?) which was almost a phone. It had a sticking out antenna just for wifi, and had a sim card slot that serves no purpose. I guess HP wanted to make it a phone but changed their mind at the last minute
@Microang
@Microang 2 роки тому
@@michaelfeng8956 I believe there was an iPAQ that was a "smartphone", just looked it up and it was the h6300 series and later on there were more models. The XDA phones, after which XDA developers was named with also cool pocket PC smartphones.

I had one of these when I was 14, I was so obsessed with phones growing up and after hours of research decided to get it. I would spend hours just playing golf on it and organizing folders. P900 reached legendary status, if I remember correctly a lot of people preferred the P900 over P910 as the P910 almost tried to be everything to everyone a little too much. P910 was almost an ‘S’ version of the P900, with slightly improved screen and more onboard memory.

Symbian was way ahead of its time and I miss it. I have both a Nokia 2760H and a 6133. These phones still look and feel very modern. these were the first devices I owned that could play music on, send pictures via Bluetooth to Windows Mobile phones and store files on without the heavy need of a computer. The 6133 was so modern in fact, I could use Yahoo Messenger with most of the features the desktop-class app had while I was away from home. These phones were a dream for me at the time. The speakers on them are loud and crisp. I love snapping my 6133 open and closed with the side button. Every now and then I'll boot them up just for the pure nostalgia along with other devices I've collected over the years.

Hi, Michael Thank you for writing and producing this review with the P910i you acquired from me🥰. As always video quality from you is top-notch! This series is one of my favorite on UKposts. It takes us back to a time when mobile devices used funky branding, features and customizability. The contrast is almost unbelievable when compared to modern devices - such as the Apple iPhone and Samsung Galaxy lineups. I thought I threw a full sized sim card in there.... my bad! I have so much of those just lying around. Trust me, I will be showing this video to my friends, as I now have BRAGGING RIGHTS!!!!😎😎😎 EDIT: Fun fact, this phone was used by Andrew Garfield's character in the 2010 film, The Social Network.

The only thing I did not like back then was that firmware updates were often at the mercy of the network provider as to whether you received it or not. Phones were often customized to the network.

The amount of research on stuff that isn't easy to find given the period, unique expertese from someone who was a mobile phone enthusiast before phones were widespread enough for that to be a practical thing for most people, the effort of sourcing these things and getting them working, subject matter that remains timeless in a space where every video usually is never watched again after a month and all wrapped up in a package of phenomenal editing. this series is nothing short of amazing.

Defo one of my dream phones back in the day, when PDA phones simply oozed surrealism. was in high school when it first came out & was simply too damn broke to afford something so godlike back in the day. nevertheless, it was one of the reasons why i was so into phones & so enthused by new releases. a stark contrast to where i stand today when phones are concerned, as anything that're not foldables ain't even gonna pique my interest. it's a rather weird thing, coming to think about it. the dream of seeing smartphones becoming a reality was why i got so excited about phones back in the day, & that excitement was thoroughly snuffed out not long after the dream did become reality to the point where everyone was owning one.

I have worked in Ericsson Italy from 2001 to 2008 (on 9/11 i have my desk on the lane of the office, shifted to a real space a few months after) and i used to play with many phones from T61 to P800 and even many Nokia ones, for testing mobile services. I loved to work in that place, i have the best memories of these years and your video takes me back to the ol' good times :(

I had the company I was working for overseas give me one despite me using a Palm device at the time....and after a rather long getting used to it period, I liked it---when it wasn't crashing that is! Thanks for the blast from the past Michael, it was fun 👍

I was a hardcore Grafitti user back in the Palm 3e days. So having it similarly on the P910 I felt at home. Awesome days, full of nostalgia. I do miss when phones were this fun. Great video Michael!

Mine too, and since then I really wanting to have one. But it was too expensive for me to have it that I might break it. When he retiring it, the phone is too old and there are better ones in the market, even though they are not touchscreen.

I was a happy owner of the p800, p900 and then the P910. I loved it, at the time. It was so ahead of its time. Thank you for making this video.

I LOVED the p80p and p900 and something we’ve lost is the JOY of the side wheel. Turn to scroll and press to click. Wonderful. I miss it.

Still remember the day I bought my P800. Loved the optional keypad, although it had resistive "dimples" that pressed on the touchscreen to dial numbers. I think I removed it rather quickly. There was a great racing game for it that used the scrollwheel as a steering wheel.
