This video explains how cases (nominative, accusative, dative and genitive) and genders (masculine, feminine, neuter) work in German. The video explains how to recognise the gender of a noun in German, how to work out what case a noun needs to take, and then shows whether you need to use der, die, das, dem, den, des.
This video gives an overview of a challenging aspect of German grammar.

I'm learning German at University and would become really confused with all the different articles and how they change depending on the cases (or in some cases deciding which case is which), but you've managed to explain it so concisely it's incredible. I really feel I've gotten a better understanding of them now after your beautiful explanation. Please do keep posting.

This is very well explained, though I find the music extremely distracting for such a complicated lesson.

It just re-enforces what I've said many times, for a native English speaker, German grammar is really challenging...

Are animals really neuter? Like bear, bird, penguin are Der, so I am quite confused. Maybe I did bump into some special animal words that are masculine.
@HerrReid
@HerrReid Рік тому
You are right about those animals being 'der', the point I was trying to make was about young people and young animals usually being neuter, e.g. das Lamm, das Kalb, das Ferkel, not animals in general.

A tiny light bulb light up but from a Native English and Polish speaker this makes little sense to me.

thats cool and all, but what even are cases?
@HerrReid
@HerrReid Рік тому
Cases basically give you more information about the nouns in a sentence - who is doing what to who, what belongs to who and so on. You see it in English where I changes to me, my and mine for example. In German these words all change depending on who is doing the action. Also the words for 'the' and 'a/an' as well as adjectives change.
