It actually happened to me once, but of course not to the same extent. Someone said an inside joke and everyone started laughing, including me even though I didn't get it. One girl suddenly stopped and asked me "why are you laughing? You can't possibly know what it's about". I struggled for a bit, but my friend followed up with "he's laughing out of politeness!" and fortunately everyone accepted this explanation. It was stressful, though. I'm grateful to my friend for saving me there. Soon after that, I came up with a go-to response for such situations "because laughing is contagious and I'm pretty empathetic".

@@Clinkydaggers Three separate instances of the video were recorded with the exact same lighting. Then these videos are stitched together. The background is *super* dark, so if there were any clouds overcast or a car passing by or filmed during dawn/dusk, it would mess with the stitching. This technique is one that has been used for a long time, even during the very early years of film but it was far more tedious back then since it was on film and not digital. I don't remember the first video I watched regarding the specifics, but there are plenty of tutorials talking about it. Yeah, spent a hot minute looking for the video I watched but I can't seem to find it. I feel like it's either some random recommended video I watched 4 years ago or a Captain Disillusion video. Most likely a Captain video.

If you are just an oddball but they do like you they can still integrate you to a point where these kinds of jokes are very fertile. Not everybody is the same and it depends on the special kind of trust and empathy that you have for that person. Now if you demonstrate that kind of empathy with the right people there might be some very silly resolving situations. But perhaps it's counterintuitive...

I have a Peruvian friend who laughs at his own jokes all the time. Even in jokes he'll laugh at. Often his jokes are barely funny if they are funny at all. But his laughter is so contagious other people can't help but laugh. And that fuels him to laugh more, and often repeat his joke. His joke really could be meaningless to everyone else but him, yet since it made him laugh everyone else is laughing. It's quite fun really.

I usually explain the joke, but lots of inside jokes aren't nearly as funny when you're explaining them as they were when it happened. That's probably why a lot of people say "oh, it's just an inside joke." It's either inappropriate to explain, or the explanation isn't what's funny and it's a 100% "I guess you'd have to be there" situation.

I once laughed really hard at a really REALLY inappropriate moment in a movie theater; I don't remember the movie but I remember the scene. My laughter wasn't contagious but the box was open and I couldn't stop even though I realized I was the only one laughing and it was super humiliating, since the scene was kind of horrific and could be triggering to a lot of people.
