The Lada is a stalwart symbol of Soviet Russia. It has also been considered one of the worst cars ever made. Its heyday, if it had one, was in the 1970s, but a substantial number of vehicles remain on the roads today, and hold a special place in the hearts and minds of many Russians. To tell the story of this much-ridiculed car, the filmmaker Dieter Deswarte, the cinematographer Annegret Sachse and the sound engineer Yulia Glukhova travelled the Russian north, from Murmansk to Siberia, to find where the cheap and easily repairable - if reliably unreliable - vehicles are still in action. Along the way, they got to know a colourful range of drivers who recount the complexities of Lada ownership, and, more important still, show the car on the road - or sometimes what it takes to get it on the road. Undercutting broad Western stereotypes of a certain Russian dourness, the filmmakers find humour, warmth and kindness in their driving adventures across the icy landscape.
Lada debuted in 2014 as part of the award-winning omnibus documentary Cinetrain: Russian Winter. An ambitious and inventive filmmaking initiative, the Cinetrain project sent 21 filmmakers from around the world to all corners of Russia to explore its culture through the spectrum of stereotypes - from mail-order brides to heavy drinking. The project was inspired by the work of the influential Soviet Russian filmmaker Aleksandr Medvedkin (1900-89) who, in 1934, built a mobile film studio inside a train before setting out to document life across the country.
Director: Dieter Deswarte (www.dieterdeswarte.com/)
Cinematographer: Annegret Sachse (www.annegretsachse.com/)
Sound: Yulia Glukhova (holohz.com/ABOUT)
Producers: Mirumir Studio, Tanya Petrik, Guillaume Protsenko

I am a lady from a small city in Kentucky, USA and the scene at 12:00 really struck me as so relatable. We really are so similar Russians and Americans. At least working class ones. The mother and children huddled in the car with the father outside trying his repair. They all are awaiting patiently but nervously, seeing what can be done. We have all been there. Although for my family it was a Ford, theirs a Lada. The experience is the same. It really struck me. Sending love and respect to the Russian people. Hoping for better times ahead. 🥂

Back in Czechoslovakia, when my dad was young, he bought a Lada with my mom. He says that they were some of the best cars that a normal person could buy back then and they were quite costly. Better quality than Skodas had back then. He is in his sixties now, changed many different cars since then, now drives a Kia. Not long ago he bought this old Lada 2105 again, to keep as a nostalgic piece and to drive to car meets. It is a great car with a character and requires a quite skilled driver to drive. I have a Mazda MX-5 which is fun to drive, but driving this Lada is a great experience. I hope to keep it for a long time. Anyways, great video, really enjoyed it. :)

My uncle in Romania had a Lada from the 80’s. He bought it used, drove it for 30 years and just recently got rid of it without my knowledge. He gave it to a Romanian version of “cash for clunkers” type program like we had under Obama. He ended up getting a Skoda Octavia or something like that. I’m in the US and only talk to him a few times a year and I always ask how the Lada is doing, and last time we spoke around Christmas, he gave me the news. I was devastated. I wish he kept it for me to put around in when I go on vacation there. They’re really good cars, and he took meticulous care of it. He still has a Soviet tractor from the 60’s that he can’t find parts for anymore so he’s forced to make his own parts on his lathe.

Amazing what Russia has done with the 1966 Fiat 124. I live in the Washington DC area and saw one on the road many years ago. About 20 years ago, a friend picked up a '51 Moskvitch. I helped him get it running and got to drive it. More recently, I saw a black Volga sedan for sale, parked at a gas-station. But it was Sunday and the owner wasn't around to ask about it.

Cars before "Y2K" are indeed the best! Russia has Lada (today belong to Renault Group), Indonesia has Kijang (Toyota). And Lada in Indonesian language means Pepper! Legendary "Kijang" a combination of SUV and MPV. Made in Indonesia worldwide marketed except Europe and America. Kijang means Deer but also stands for "Kerjasama Indonesia-Jepang" (Collaboration of Indonesia and Japan) Kijang since 1970. I've found this on #OLX. What do you think? My parents had a Polski Fiat version in the UK in the 1980s. It was fine, if you could ignore the 'uncool' comments of idiots. Their first ever new car. Dad stuck an SU carb on it and it ran like a (slightly rattly) clock. Banger racers used to like them because they were solid (unless very rusty) cheap (just take the b------ thing away, mate!) and if you stuck a single carb Weber off a Ford on them they'd rev like a Flymo. Underrated. Square Ladas (or the various clones) are now vanishingly rare over here now. More often seen on UKposts 'crash' videos where poor things seem to get into insane perils, often not their fault.

Hi to my Russian Comrades from the UK , i just want to say although the Ladas don't look great and are not racing cars , they are very reliable , here in the UK we do not have reliable cars , yes you can buy some Toyota or Honda but they cost a lot of money and most people here drive Ford or Vauxhall and sadly these cars are designed to break down , where as your Lada,s are still going strong after 40 or 50 years
