As a young black father & husband, this was a terrifying story to watch. But my heart goes out to that mayor & the beautiful ppl of that town. I grew up in a very small town like theirs although it was a lil larger. Color didn't matter to us, everyone here had known each other all of their lives, went to the same schools, worked together, etc. One of my best friends & I grew up together, saw each other everyday, & would fish &/or hunt or hang out during the weekends. The way my mother & his mother had since they were kids, which was the same way my grandfather & his grandfather had as well. His grandfather actually saved my grandfather's life. A land owner that was very mean, evil, & prejudice had been harassing my grandmother, my grandfather stood up for her. The man wanted to kill him, my best friend's grandfather heard wind of it & drove to not only warn my grandfather & great-grandmother but to hide them & protect them. As very strong black ppl they were not going to run from their home; so my best friend's grandfather parked his truck in front of my great-grandmother's porch. Making it literally impossible for anyone to hurt my grandfather & great-grandmother without going thru him. 17 yrs ago when I was 11 my mother & father split up; pop was a good man but he had endured a lifetime of physical & mental illness & he started to spiral out of control. When he became a threat to our safety we had no choice but to leave. We didn't have much money, we left with what we could throw in a big GLAD trash bag, some nights when we didn't have a family to stay with, we had to sleep in our van. But God helped us along the way, when i started going to school down here my clothes were so outdated to the point it was daily ammunition for those who picked on me & bullied me. My mother got very sick under all the stress & pain she was enduring til the point a tumor developed behind her left eye so large til it was pushing her eye out of her head. She was in the hospital in a town about 45 minutes away from us, my older brothers & I provided for our sisters & ourselves by any means necessary. I didn't want to turn to the street with my brothers bcz I didn't want to disappoint momma & break her heart. So I sold almost everything I had in this world for as much as i could. Til the point all I had to wear was 5 pairs of clothes to wear during the wk, one suit & tie, one pair of white Nike's, one pair of black dress shoes. So the picking & bullying reached an all time high, there wasn't a day that I didn't have to go somewhere & hide as wept. The kid that world end up becoming one of my best friends, Brandon, came to school one day with a few shirts; a few pairs of pants, a pair of Timbs & a pair of converses (that I still have, 17 yrs later), when my bus got to school he was waiting, when I got off the bus he took me to the bathroom with him, he pulled a peanut butter colored Dickie's shirt, a pair of jeans, & the Timbs & told me to put them on. Although I had & still somewhat insecurities of being vulnerable in the presence of others, I couldn't hold back the tears. At one point when I was putting the Timbs on, i had to do so with foggy & blurred vision bcz I literally couldn't see thru my tears. He & his family gathered a large sum of his clothes & some shoes & they looked out for me & my siblings. It wasn't until 6 yrs later that another one of my best friends (who used to date my friend) were just talking & reminiscing over our yrs in middle & high school & i mentioned how much Brandon had helped me when we first moved down here. & my friend, Kelly, revealed something to me that made me sob, have Kelly get in my car with me, & seek out Brandon wherever he was in the city, throw my arms around him & hug him. Bcz not only did he help me in the darkest time of my life by giving me his friendship & giving me a wardrobe of clothes... but the very same abundance of clothes that he gave me...were his. He literally gave me the clothes off his back & shoes of his feet. I tell you that story bcz the ppl of this town reminded me of Brandon & our story & history. These beautiful, humble, meek, caring, & kind ppl didn't agree with the hatred & bigotry of this/these subhuman pests. Even though the likely hood of there being any African-Americans in that small city; they would not accept nor tolerate these man-sized rodents hatred & bigotry. Even when they starting to become outnumbered & had already been outgunned. They united to rage against those moronic monsters, even when in fear for the health, safety, & life. To see mayor tear up when reflecting & speaking of that horrible period of time made my wife & I tear up in that moment as well. I've never met a soul from Leith, i don't know any of the names of the ppl that call Leith home. But with the deepest & most honest sincerity, I love them each from the bottom of my heart. They are beautiful ppl. To paraphrase a statement made by MLK, all that is required for an injustice to prevail, is a few good ppl to turn a blind eye & do nothing about it. I fear for my children sometimes when I'm thinking of what the future may hold for them one day. But seeing &/or hearing of individuals like the ppl in Leith makes me hope again. Two of my favorite songs by two of my favorite artists comes to mind. Louis Armstrong-What A Wonderful World, & Sam Cooke-A Change Is Going To Come.

Cobb reminds me of my step father. I prayed everyday for him. Than I decided he didn't ever appreciate me so I started to pray for those he was racist against. I spent so much energy trying so hard to keep his racism for ruining me and he's cut off or good. We are all people and I love everyone. I just don't pray for him anymore and that's sad in itself
