I've been a figure skating fan for decades. What we are seeing with Ilia Malinin is another quad contest like in the 90s. Not that I mind quad jumps, but I hope that we get to a saner period where quads will only be one part of a skater's program, and not the main part. We need to get back to all-round programs which show artistry and physicality.

4Lo is such a monster of a jump, it doesn't have a toe assist unlike with theoretically harder jumps like the Lutz and Flip, and it's a lot more difficult to cheat the jump. It isn't a surprise it is such a rare jump unlike the Lutz and Flip that can be cheated easier.
@vistaprime

the loop can also be cheated with pre-rotation, Shoma pre-rotates all the time. Hopefully his coach Lambiel starts to correct this technique.
@paolo1391
@paolo1391 Рік тому
The loop is quite possibly one of the easiest of the jumps because it does not change axis like a toe loop Axel or Salchow. All you do is turn on the edge hook, vault off the toe pick and your pull in and you're you're up and running.... Anybody that thinks a loop is difficult must be listening to other idiots on the internet... Just look at what double jump most beginners get first, it is the loop because it is the easiest of the double jumps., You just sit on that back outside edge lean a bit hook half turn and VAULT(that's right, I said vault) off the toe pick pull in rotate nothing changes, your arms and legs is just come in and out....

You're right, 4Lo is a monster of a jump. @@6crossovers Yes you are correct. however some coaches would still correct it. Coaches such as Mishin, Orser and Rafael, would still correct his technique, even if it meant it would be less consistent while the was adjusting to the new technique. But I agree most coaches wouldn't change it if he's winning and the judges don't care. Funnily enough when he popped his 4-flip at NHK that toe pick was the most correct technique I had ever seen from him.

@StealthheartDraws

Also some you can see they use the pick of the skate to take off and others they don’t. The toe loop and flip and Lutz are pick-assisted and the loop, axel, and salcow are edge jumps. The axel is the easiest to spot because it’s the only one where the skater takes off facing forward; every other jump has them taking off facing backwards. I know the Lutz is where they spin the opposite direction then what is normal, and the others are just knowing which lands on the same leg and which switches. I think the flip and the salcow switch and the loops land on the same foot.

You can see how people have double standards, and how this sport is still so toxic and sexist. When it’s men, you just have to make an achievement. When you’re a women, if what you achieved is not perfect AND beautiful you’ll not only never get the appreciation for it, but you’ll get roasted for even attempting it, no matter how hard you trained and how difficult was the element. Women’s bodies are different so they do get there a little later but Trusova did five quads the same year Nathan Chen did, but didn’t even get gold. And no her technique was not awful. Forget technique, they were all stumbling and falling and fighting to land. When they land no one, and this is for men too, has more elegance in their landing positions than those Russian girls. @@Mica_T the exact word is like this Poor take-off: For example a toe-assisted jump is taken off from the full blade, Toe Loop is executed like a Toe Axel or there is excessive rotation on the ice at the take-off. The reduction in GOE is -1 to -3. I think it's not only punishing toeloops as it starts with "toe assisted jumps" which means flip and lutz are included as well. The toe axel has been there in the ijs since the beginning and they added the "or" which is the full blade and excessive prerotation as example of poor take off. This is new. Now regarding if judges will ever comply and apply this new rules is different matter entirely. We already know that they never do what they supposed to do. Like giving 9s to SS and TR for skaters with empty programs and mediocre skating. I bet it won't drastically change or maybe we'll see disparity of GOE given across judges for the same element because ISU has never punished corrupt judges

The way Ilia's skates it's 4A is accepted by ISU today - judges let go "pre-rotate", also, they don't judge on non-proper use of toe-pick, blade, and edge. I don't want to be specific to him - many skaters do their 3A while not follow the Axel jump definition - take off left forward outside edge. Look at other videos posted by this channel. Check out how Kamila, Yuzuru, Kihira did their 3A (or Yuzuru's 4A). Jason Brown has a good video about all 6 different jumps. Ilia's left leg/foot skate much simpler/shorter (in distance) and slower compared to other top skaters. Basically, he skid his left blade, then do a stretch after his right leg/foot had a powerful kick/forward rotation. Look at the height of his right leg/foot when he is about to take off - is it realistic? Compared to other skater's 3A - in what condition, ones right leg/foot can lift that high if one have activities on their both leg/feet? For Axel jump, one need to skate forward (with right leg/foot follow behind) toward outside on their left foot until take off, and right leg/foot start forward rotation. When it gets to take off, most of time, you just have left toe-pick touch the ice. And next moment, left foot blade would have a big angle change (that's the result if one continue have force on their left leg/foot). Please do a study on how to do Axel jump by videos or graph, or at least "edge jump"). Don't just do "surface" work. Why Axel jump is so hard? 1) Take off forward (note: it's not just facing forward. Left foot/leg need to skate forward. 2) Because both leg/foot has some activities when take off, one need to have good synchronization of both leg's activities. If only one leg play a major role, the other leg just play a very minor role, what's the difficulty?

And the fact you try to complain about prerotation with regards to Ilia's great jump tehnique instead of Shoma's masively pre-rotated 4F makes me think you're a salty Fanyu
