This week at Starbase was all about repairs, inspections and construction, as various systems were checked out following IFT-3, and work progresses on the next launch tower, a new parking garage, new office building, Starfactory expansion, and test facilities at the Massey Outpost, while over at Cape Canaveral, SpaceX launches a Cargo Dragon from the new facilities at SLC-40, and welcomes Crew Dragon Endurance back to port following the return of the Crew-7 team.

for the reinforced concrete pour area, my vote is parking lot currently because we didn't see vapor barrier go down, so not a building and we don't see the electrical stub-outs for running power to each spot that would be needed for Tiny Homes or an RV Park.

Your weekly update videos continue to astound me. It doesn't escape me that someone has to trawl through multiple hours of videos, from multiple cameras & to know (with some certainty) of what's going on & identify each 'discussion worthy' events, write a blurb about it, collate the videos and the blurbs into a script, edit the video, dub the script over the video, preview & post. Just the production levels of these 15 minute weekly updates is (to me) very impressive! 👍👌✌

@avgjoe5969 The level of engineering marvels going on over there is crazy. Spacex is so lightning fast that they blow everything out of the water. SLS was what nearly 30 billion for a single rocket? Has less payload? Expandable stages? Runs on a much more problematic fuel, hydrogen? Nearly 15 years for the first one? Then you look at starship... Failed first flight, so one could argue that sls was more successful... However, for what 2 billionish? They built prototypes They launched and landed a second stage They brought engine production to whole new levels They built an entire product facility (which were tents to be fair) They built the tower/mount They launched 3 times, even if it didn't do everything, still wildly successful tests. All this in that a decade... Spacex for the win, NASA for the bureaucratic red tape.

A lot of this isn't rocket science, but it's impressive how much engineering and fabrication is advancing SpaceX toward the goal of Mars colonization. The pace of the building is impressive. It reminds me of when people in the US dared to do great things. The world is a meeker place now, but SpaceX is bucking the trend.

It's fascinating to see how science fact can overtake the perceptions that science fiction once had: Remember how movies and tv portrayed rockets landing? All slow and steady until touchdown? Reality is that they streak earthward at an incredible pace and then at the very final few hundred meters or so, fire their engines and slow rapidly to a "gentle" touchdown. Of course, that's with no living beings on board. Wonder if it will change when people are on board...
@just_archan
@just_archan Місяць тому
For booster don't change, but for ship, probably bigger header tanks and much slower approach. But we will see. We are long time before first attempt of ship catching. It will require much, much more precise models for re-entry. I don't expect any attempt at least for a year and more. For booster I am confident that first catch we will see when second tower becomes online, so probably end of the year

Rocket scientists were talking about what we call "suicide burns" in 1950 and earlier, as the most propellant-efficient way to land. They were also saying that propulsive landings were technically difficult to do, would require automated systems, and could not be controlled by a human pilot.

Emergency!!! Baffles will not work to prevent the slushing problem, because the tanks of the starship system are too large. That is the only reason why the starship will explode every time. The solution: The tanks of Starship and Superheavy need 2 disk valves, expanding the diameter of each tank. One of the disks, the one on top, rotates above the contiguous disk to close the overlaping holes on the surface of the disks; to reduce the Size of the tank by dividing it, before any rotation or acceleration of the rocket. This will prevent slushings and protect the plumbing, if located 10% above the bottom section of each tank. Large telescopic pistons can be attached below the bottom of disk valves to control the fuel pressure as the piston expands into the fuel tank. I have built a model that works perfectly. The second disk valve can be located 10% below the front of the tank, to also protect the front of the tanks from the slushing forces. The gridfins are too flat and too small to be effective enough and will not be able to control the booster. Why is Elon not using four pins instead of three to secure each heat shield tyle? Four anchor points provide far more stability to secure a tyle, not three.What is more important than securing the heat shield? Four anchor points would eliminate the problems of tyles falling off the ship every time there is an engine ignition. Please get this message to Elon. Thank you. Also, Spacex needs 3 actuators to move the payload bay doors correctly, not two. They have only two now, one at each end of the payload bay. They need one at the center position. Three will guarantee that there will always be enough support to open and close the doors, even if one of the three fails. I know the spacex engineers can see these problems. It is like ignoring the elephant in the room. Musk needs to hire people who can be trusted and who will not continue accepting bribes from Jeff Bozo to sabotage spacex.

I love your reasoning. "They need 3 actuators because it's better than 2" "4 pins are better than 3". And the genius idea of dividing fuel tanks (just imagine the weight penalty) and modifying the grid fins - I'm sure you did CFD analysis of all that stuff.
@kensmith8832
@kensmith8832 Місяць тому
The problem is the volume to control cavitation during launch vibrations. Most people have no idea why we have EFI on cars. They think it is for fuel economy, but they have no idea of the fuel cavitation in the fuel bowls that caused so many problems with the carburetor. The carb was the best design for low maintenance and easy to work on, but fuel cavitation would pop holes in the fuel float. All it took was a pothole to cause a car to start running rich. A solution for the tanks would be full length dividers that would appear to be inner tanks about 4" in diameter. The manifold at the bottom would have to limit the cross-section of the fuel area to reduce air bubbles from forming. The added resistance may become a problem, as the added weight of the inner tanks. Fuel cavitation is a major issue with upscaling rockets! Fact is, most people aren't good engineers, even though many of them have a college degree in engineering. They never learned to get their hands dirty and relate directly to the problem. People want to sit in a clean room and dictate as if they are a god.
