Yeah, Paris and Istanbul, both incredibly crowded places compared to Berlin. In the background of this video for example you see moments without other people in the frame, this is almost impossible in the aforementioned places.

You're right, there's even space in Berlin and not everyone goes to the same places, I think.

Yes it makes it almost impossible to learn German in Berlin... I work in Berlin but we only speak english, my friends are international as well and we only speak english, I practice german only with beaurocrats!

Did you notice how basically none of the adults was actually from Berlin? Due to the area where they conduct their interviews you won't get a sense of what Berlin is really like unfortunately. They are touring the most gentrified part of Berlin (Prenzlauer Berg).

People will tell you that you can live in Berlin comfortably with only speaking English. And indeed that might be true. Until you come across German bureaucracy. So learning the language is always a good idea.

Ich habe in Tokio und London gewohnt und finde es immer so witzig, dass so viele Menschen denken, Berlin so voll und groß ist.😂😂😂 Nach 3 Jahre hier wünsche ich oft, dass die Stadt ein bisschen größer und kosmopolitischer wäre. Aber naja, Berlin hat trotzdem einen Charme, den die Megacities könnten nie haben.

According to what standard or ranking is considered Berlin a beautiful city. Gotta be the ugliest capital city in Europe hands down. Grey, modern dull architecture, dirty... The only beautiful Berlin was pre WW2 but every beautiful architecture was destroyed.

That's indeed not very clear in German! Usually people say "mein Freund/meine Freundin" for boy/girlfriend and "ein Freund/eine Freundin" for friend ☺️ Some also use "Partner/Partnerin" but that's a bit formal.

You don't use a vocative comma in German with Hallo. It also doesn't turn into an adjective. English might be a different matter. A vocative comma in German with Hallo would only signal to make a pause nothing else.

It's definitely different in English, precisely because English doesn't do much compounding of adjectives and nouns. But it really surprises me to hear that German wouldn't need a vocative comma with every direct address, especially when German is so extremely comma-happy. My native tongues are Swedish and English, and the vocative comma is vital in both. German tends to hew close to Swedish in punctuation, but with a tendency to favor *more* commas (in a way Swedish used to, before the mid-1900s). Take the difference between "Wie geht's, Leute?" and "Wie geht's Leute?". The meaning of the latter is clearly different than "How are you people doing?", asking more about the general state of people as a whole. That "Hallo Leute" is generally unambiguous isn't the issue so much as whether the rule can be abandoned just because there is no real risk of confusion. I mean, "Haben Sie eine Frage" is clearly a question, despite the lack of a question mark on the end, but does that mean that the question mark should just be omitted?

@@JohnThelin As every Germanic language English does compound. Although e.g. "dual clutch transmission" is separated by its components, it acts as a compound, therefore is a compound, but disguised. Also I wrote 'vocative comma with Hallo'. It's "Hallo John, ...." not "Hallo, John, ....". The first comma would only signal to make a pause. Whether it's there or not, doesn't make a difference in meaning, but in receiving the meaning. There is actually no difference between "Wie geht's, Leute?" and "Wie geht's Leute?". Why? Because cases. To mean "the general state of people as a whole", you would have to say "Wie geht es den Leuten?". The vocative comma is only needed, when the existence of that comma makes a difference in meaning (Example: Wie geht es John? vs. Wie geht es, John?). Using the vocative comma where it's not needed and doesn't cause a difference in meaning, is just serializing a rule. But! There is one thing you must acknowledge. German does not care a tiny bit, what Swedisch does nor that English gives a flying sneeze what German does and vice versa and all around. Every language is its own continuum, where the rules are set by the speakers. This means if English likes and needs the Oxford comma, neither German nor Swedish has to incorporate it, which means further, that making an argument with another language's rules and usages is meaningless.
