Great analysis. I started watching hockey in the 70's. Even though I watched legendary players since then ( Orr, Lafleur, Bossy, Trottier, Gretzky, Messier, Lemieux, Sakic, etc...), Crosby is the most complete player I have ever seen. Like you said, he is a super skilled star with the work ethic of a 3rd liner afraid to be sent to the AHL. He raises the level of play of the people around him. His game is a 200 ft game. I largely credit him for the awesome talent shown by young players today because he displayed these skills at the highest level and no coach would have tried to corral him into a system where these skills could have been twarted. Yet, his understanding of the game is second to none. Guys like McDavid and MacKinnon grew up watching Crosby using these skills and that is the standard that they gave themselves. I also suspect that he will hang his skates only when he feels that he can't perform at the top level. We are lucky to have witness his career. And I'm glad I finally got to see him live last fall. Go Pens!

He's been an absolute gem to watch and has meant so much to the city of Pittsburgh and really hockey in Western PA in general. His combination of skill and work ethic is unmatched. Between him and McDavid the league has been so much fun to tune into every night. McDavid has the insane physcial attributes of Speed and Stick Handling while Crosby is essentially a supercomputer on the ice with his vision and hockey IQ, while having insane lower body strength that you can't knock him off the puck. He doesn't have the speed McDavid has, but his insane hockey IQ has made him still be a top player despite being 36. It sucks that we have to play the "what if" game with Sid just like with Mario. Crosby missed most of his prime to concussions while playing in a lower scoring league compared to now. Not to mention he didn't have much in terms of talent on his wings until the emergence of Jake Guentzel. Remove those concussions and you have another 3 100-point seasons, a couple more Art Ross's, a rocket, and another 2 MVPs and Harts. I'd love to see what a healthy, prime Crosby in today's league with Guentzel/Rakell as his wingers could do offensively. Easily hit 140+ points a season.

People forget that Crosby was scoring as many goals as Ovechkin before his 1st concussion ended that. In his 5th year, Crosby had a 50 goal season. Entering his 6th year, he was on pace for 65 goals midway through the season until the concussion derailed his career. In other words, Crosby was going to be a perennial 50+ goals scorer every season like Ovi but he'd also have the 120+ points to go along with it (while Ovi only scored goals but didn't have the points). The amazing thing is that Crosby had to change his game style to protect his career and still found a way to be amazing despite not being his prime self. He adapted his game and was able to still win 2 more cups after the series of concussions that nearly ended his career. So the fact he's showing us that at age 36 he's capable of scoring 50 on a pretty mediocre team, confirms how great he's always been. It's not like he's getting "better", he was always a 50-60 goal scorer in this league with 120+ points per season but since his concussions changed that, we are only starting to see what we missed out on during his prime years.

I've watched probably around 800 of his games growing up a pens fan. I remember seeing him practice as a rookie and thinking he was the fastest person I've ever seen on the ice.. crazy to think that almost 20 years later and all the shit that's happened since then in his career and he still dominates most aspects of the game

Love your breakdown here, Sid is and has always been the best at all facets of the game, he’s got all the tools needed to be considered as a top 10 ALL TIME. It’s great as a hockey fan to see a guy try so hard for his entire career and succeed. I’m not and have never been a Pens fan but his ability to come back from injury and get back to his absolute best is another mark for him. Intelligence, talent and undying WILL is what will ultimately earn Sidney Crosby a place in the top 10 ever to play in the NHL. Great analysis !

I get anxiety thinking about the future when the Pens have a less-star-studded team. Old Crosby will be picked up on camera in Lemieux's box drinking a beer while the announcers reminisce about what it was like watching the "classic" Croz/Malkin/Letang//Guentzel/Fleury teams.

Love the breakdown. I have learned to watch hockey in a totally new way after watching your vids. This one is a prime example. I knew he was great but never knew what made him great. I grew up in the southern US in the 80s and was never raised around hockey. I love to watch it and its such a great game and really the only sport I watch anymore. Your vids help me enjoy everything so much more. Keep up the great work!

Just watch Nathan Mackinnon on spiting chiclets. He tells a story training with Sid about how he beat him 9 times in a row running up sand dunes, on the 10th time he tripped Mack because he was going to lose! Croz has been kicking ass and taking lunch money since he was 5, what a champ.

I am a non-american avid football (soccer) follower and fan (been watching football since end of 80s) who's become a fan of NHL since about 2010, much thanks to S. Crosby, and I am not even a Pens-fan! I used to follow NHL back in the 90s (thanks to NHL '94 on SNES), but since 2010, my interest for the game was awakened properly. Crosby's skills, passion, mind at ease, personality (according to interviews and others who've met him in person), productivity, teamwork and quite simply his career has been quite simply outstanding, admirable and phenomenal. He's used his talent so very well. And just like in football, whenever a player is "at ease" in a club, he/she does what Crosby does; play the game on another level that's well above the average, even to this day. Let's look at the facts (+ what's been mentioned in this video): He's got all the suitable and good things going on that pleases him and makes his everyday mindset whole and at ease. Pens knows they got a player that delivers season in and out and who's not a "dramaqueen" (contract/extension issues, unnecessary media cases, internal matters etc.), so he can simply stay put, enjoy the game as much as he can and still provide his qualities, even at his age. Stability, things and mind at ease = key factors that will help a player to get him/her going on like it does for Crosby, and that's why I am not at all surprised seeing him deliver, even at this age. Another great video, and a great shoutout to such a legend in the game!

And Sid's speed hasn't slowed down all that much either. Sure, he isn't blowing by defenders every game but is that by choice or because he can't. Sid has made certain plays this year that displays he still has foot speed. He's just a much smarter player now than when he was blowing through the neutral zone. Watching Sid play is one of the best treats of this game and it will be a sad day when he finally hangs them up. He is as unique as they come and of the greatest to ever play the game. Possibly the most complete player of all time.

What makes what hes doing even more impressive is that Pittsburgh has been constantly rotating players to find lines that fit. That means hes been producing with Rust, Rakell, Guentzel (before he left), Smith, O'Connor, Bunting, just to name a few. And not to mention all the different Defensive pairings that he plays with. AND he plays the PK unlike most other Superstars... 🐐
