Why isn't Taiwan a Part of China? - The Chinese Civil war
The story of China’s communists’ rise to power starts in the early years of the 20th century. In 1912, the state of imperial China as everyone knew it came to an end with the overthrow of the last Qing monarch. The next 4 years saw a would-be emperor, Yuan Shikai, take over for a short reign, but his death would quickly solidify the new era in Chinese history that was to come.

thank you for the research. However you got the title wrong. Both the PRC and ROC agree that Taiwan is part of China (ROC's capital is still Nanjing). They just don't agree on who is in charge of China. De facto this has led to the PRC controlling a larger part of the realm which both sides consider one and unified.

China’s resistance to Japan is one of the great untold stories of World War II. Though China was the first Allied power to fight the Axis, it has received far less credit for its role in the Pacific theater than the United States, Britain or even the Soviet Union, which only joined the war in Asia in August 1945. The Chinese contribution was pushed aside soon after the conflict, as an inconvenient story in the neat ideological narrative of the Cold War. Though far weaker and poorer than the mighty United States or the British Empire, China played a major role in the war. Some 40,000 Chinese soldiers fought in Burma alongside American and British troops in 1944, helping to secure the Stilwell Road linking Lashio to Assam in India. In China itself, they held down some 800,000 Japanese soldiers. The costs were great. At least 14 million Chinese were killed and some 80 million became refugees over the course of the war. Quick summery Japan invaded China in 1937 and brought World War II to the Far East and the pacific theaters. The US waited until 1941 to official send aids to help China after the bombing of the Pearl Harbor that took place in the same year and directly sent troops to China in 1945, a total 9 years after the invasion started. China had been fighting the war longer than any other country, as well as the difference in the nature of the war for the Chinese from them: for the Chinese, it was a war to liberate their homeland from invading forces who had a larger number of modern weaponries and well-trained troops. The contribution of the Chinese to the pacific theater was immense, and was disproportionate to the recognition it gained at the end of the war. --Wendi Qiu

Those who allied with Russia won, and those who were against Russia lost. You see, the Kuomintang did not form an alliance with Russia. He provoked a Sino-Japanese war, which was threatening Russia. Russia did not want to see annexation wars going on in its surrounding areas, because Russia will not sit idly by and ignore the geopolitical changes in East Asia, but Russia is fighting in Europe. At this time, the Kuomintang's China has hurt Russia. He has become the target of Russia's punishment. Therefore, failure is inevitable and he can only go into exile in the island country.

When Chiang Kai-shek retreated to Taiwan in 1949, his army had been fighting the Communist army for 20 years. It was difficult to say that it was a problem with the army. At least the Americans in North Korea in 1950 would definitely disagree. The first batch of weapons assistance from the Soviet Union to the Chinese army was in May 1951, so there is no reason why the CCP army is strong because of Soviet weapons.

@@Hhenry-sk7rn Everything you wrote here is irrelevant to your argument. The “coexistence” of the ROC & the “Qing Dynasty” isn’t so much a “coexistence” as it is the former last Qing emperor being the 1st emperor of Manchukuo when Japan carved out Manchukuo out of former ROC territory of the historical lands of Manchuria. A better example for your argument would be when the Qing conquered the Ming, and the Ming dynasty fled to Formosa/Taiwan. But even then, the Qing eventually conquered the remnants of the Ming in Formosa/Taiwan, which has yet to happen with the ROC in Taiwan. So your argument that the PRC is the “successor” to the ROC is at the very least premature.

Taiwan is part of China. The question is how you define "China." "China" can mean either the PRC regime or a much broader geographical, historical, and civilizational concept of the Chinese Nation. 180 UN member countries in the world currently acknowledge the PRC as the sole sovereign regime over all of China including Taiwan. So legally speaking, Taiwan is a de jure part of China. De facto, the PRC has no control over Taiwan's internal administration, so it is not a de facto part of the PRC. So in short, Taiwan is part of China. Taiwan is PRC's de jure territory, acknowledged by most states and all major states in the world. Taiwan is de facto not under PRC governance. Very simple actually. A lot of people got confused, because they do not know why "China" is different from "PRC."

I think people seem to be very confused about the cultural identity of Taiwan. Let's be honest? The majority of the people living in the island of Taiwan are mostly Han Chinese. There is a reason why they are using Chinese characters for writing, speaking a Chinese dialect, even their own flag came from China since 1917 CE, it is also called the ROC which stands for the Republic of China, and etc. Being an independent nation is one thing but calming to be different people/culture from China is just dead wrong. Despite all the times the CCP has attempted to invade Taiwan. What not many people talk about was how the Republic of China also made several attempts to invade and retake their former territories from their base in Taiwan. However, in 1965, the ROC and PLA had two naval engagements. Despite boasting a superior navy, the ROC navy couldn't overcome the PLA navy. And since any large scale invasion requires control of the sea, there was just no feasible way for the Nationalists to mount a successful invasion. Also, even during the troubled times of the Great Leap Forward and Cultural Revolution. There wasn't really any popular support for Chiang Kai Shek or the Nationalist cause. And since the remnants of Chiang's forces had already been weakened by years of fighting the Japanese during WWII. There was really no realistic way for him to reunite China under the ROC. They lacked military power, didn't have the hearts and minds of the mainland populace, and even the US wasn't interested in backing their plans for conquest.

So basicly the nationalists took over while the communists were weak. Circled them but failed to notice that they fled. Then they started their capture plan again just to be interrupted by Japan. By being stubborn in taking action against the communists instead of the external threat they lost internal support (again). After Japan lost the Soviet Union supported the Chinese communists and with the support of the main population too, the nationalists lost and fled to Taiwan. And somehow the communists failed to take Taiwan to this day (at first without the protection of the US and now because of it). Man, Chinese history is really something else...
@AI-ih5or
@AI-ih5or 3 місяці тому
I am Chinese, and I can provide you with some history as to why the Communist Party did not take over Taiwan. In October 1949, the Communist army attacked Kinmen Island, which was only 5 kilometers away from the mainland. As a result, more than 9,000 troops were lost, and only 180 square kilometers of it was not captured. In January 1950, the Truman administration declared not to interfere in the Chinese Civil War. At the same time, Mao Zedong visited the Soviet Union, seeking to purchase warships from the Soviet Union and establish a navy. In June 1950, the Korean War broke out. The United States sent troops to North Korea and stationed the Seventh Fleet in Taiwan until its withdrawal in 1979. In September 1950, about 500,000 troops attacking Taiwan began to temporarily suspend military operations, and the Chinese army began to send troops to North Korea. In our eyes, the United States is the only obstacle to the territorial division of China, and we always remember this. So whenever Americans speak on the Taiwan issue, please understand if the Chinese express anger.

Your Correction is wrong, Tibet did not "remain" a "sovereign state" after Qing Collapse, here's the correction: Qing Dynasty did not "Collapse", it was negotiated to end Imperial Rule, and the Emperor transfered, as stated in the Royal Edict, that "Qing Dynasty would transfer the land of Han, Hui, Mongol, Tibetan and Manchurian to form a new Republic of China", the Emperor was allowed to stay in the Forbidden City and the expenses of the Royal family will be subsidized by the Government of Republic of China, and thus Tibet was not a sovereign state after Qing "Collapse", it was part of China since Qing established direct control from the 18th century

This is a misleading vedio without signifying the fact that 1) Taiwan was returned to RO China (Jiang Jieshi Administration)after defeating the Japanese invaders in the 2nd world war; 2) Before 1949, ROC was still the only government of China with Nanjing as the capital, governing the returned Taiwan province; 3) After 1949, ROC was driven out of the mainland China, running away to the only one province Taiwan which functioned as the temporary central government instead of the so-called ridiculous diction “the establishment of ROC.” Obviously you just said what you want but not explained what is true. In a nutshell, China civil war still has no end and it will break out anytime. Invading is damning bullshit and a total lie to the world.

Chiang Kai-shek's Nanjing regime declared that it had unified China. In fact, we all know that the local warlords only obeyed superficially. During his reign, he was committed to weakening local military power and maintaining central military power. He ordered the local army to encircle and suppress the weak CCP. In my opinion, it was also an excuse and means to consume the power of the warlords and win the support of the capital behind them. So I think it’s totally fine for the CCP to declare nominal reunification now.

While we in Taiwan appreciate your explanation and support, this narrative isn't quite accurate. Before the KMT lost China and fled to Taiwan, there were already people living here, those who lived here for generations prior to the end of WWII. The notion that "both Mainland and Taiwan belong to one China, just temporarily divided", is what both the KMT and the CCP would like you to think, but in reality, Taiwan is Taiwan, China is China. We Taiwanese don't want to be the "real" China, we just want to be Taiwan. Let China be China. Just know that most Taiwanese people commonly hate Chaing because not only did he not reflect on his defeat and fix his issues, but he basically enforced the same governing style in Taiwan as the one that failed him in China. And there's also the fact that the KMT soldiers and government in general look down on the local Taiwanese and see them as "Japanese colonial slaves". They have fewer opportunities for high-end jobs like lecturing, doctoring, and governing. And Chaing subsequently mass murdered a ton of people in the name of anti-espionage during the White Terror period. (Go watch gameplay of Detention to know more) When Taiwan was still under authoritarian KMT rule, bronze statues of Chaing were set up everywhere around the country, but nowadays people see them as an eyesore, so much so that there is one park in Taipei that is packed full of Chaing statues because people don't want them and this is the only place that is willing to adopt the statues.

Japan has been assisted by NATO for hundreds of years. It is very simple to defeat China. The Qing Dynasty only used 100,000 people to fight a battle and conquered a much larger China. The generational difference in technological weapons cannot be made up by the number of people and area. A small, high-tech army with backup can conquer the entire continent. Eurasia, Africa, and the Americas only require tens of thousands of people. As long as the technology is advanced enough, it is very simple to conquer.
