Have you noticed many Japanese players like to shake uke's lapel when they are gripping up? The reason they do this might surprise you...

You also "shake the gi" in order to give you a bit more material to grab onto and a little bit more room for throwing. If the jacket's all tight it's a bit harder to throw. I've never heard that expression before though!

Was going to ask the same question. I’ve always been taught the “shake” is distraction but I really like Shintaro’s perspective on the arm movement to evade the grip and setup the next action. Would love to hear more on why he doesn’t like the distraction shake though

Really interesting. Makes sense. I don't do Judo (jiu-jitsu guy) but my guess coming in was it was like feinting in boxing and was meant to kind of mask your actual kazushi and throw attempts by creating a lot of white noise by yanking the gi around in non-committal ways.

I started doing Judo about one-two months ago. I started shaking the gi. It’s mainly so that I can push and pull the person, so that I can hopefully get a reaction to set up a throw. Other times it’s so that I can break a grip, like what Shintaro says. Shaking the gi doesn’t help with a grip in most cases because there’s more play on the gi which could make it harder to get leverage and you can even lose the grip if you don’t have a good grip.

Would it also be they they shake it to see how they would react to a potential throw?

This channel is amazing you know I've been to many judo clubs over the last 30 years and frankly the cririculum is extremely boring, it's also osoto gari over and over and you know what I saw students quit like crazy from boring moves that dont work...I think Judo needs to have an exciting syllabus ... something that works and that's what will grow the sport it's not a secret that the sports participation has plummeted in recent decades

Since I've only ever done Judo in Asia, I have thought the shaking is normal... My senpai(s) have used the lapel shake to gather more of the material around my shoulder. It feels like a tourniquet on my left armpit. While it does raise my left shoulder, it feels more like they're driving my shoulder into my ear and head. Maybe my senpai are just mean/care about me?

I'd love to be there the moment the Judo guy gets into a real street fight and his opponent does not have on a karate ghee for him to grab. That's the Achilles heel for Judo. I suppose the Judo guy could carry an extra karate ghee with him at all times and give it to the guy who's attacking him

Grappling is grappling. The gi just adds extra handles for grips, but you can still do most of those techniques without a gi.
