I am from Germany and I am amazed that there are actually politicians advocating for more EU and taking initiative. Most of the politicians in Germany are just cowardly and backward. It's really sad, that Macron isn't matched with a strong leader in Germany. Imagine the two most influential states in the EU actually working together on much needed policy changes... Edit: no, I don't mean the 1933-45 type of leader. Maybe leadership would be a better word in that place :)

Yeah, I used to have high regard for Germany, but over the last decade, they've been doing too many mistakes and showing poor leadership on the European stage, it really got exposed over the last few years with the energy dependency on Russia, which Germany played a big part in pushing on that. I want to see a strong Germany, showing good leadership, but under the current government, I don't see that happening, they need to wake up to the reality of how the world is changing and like you say, too many are showing cowardly and backwards policies, and it's surprising to see with everything that is happening from Russia, the US, China and the Middle East, if this isn't a sign for waking up, I don't know what is. As for Macron, I don't agree with everything he says, but he is right about the EU and what we need to do as Europeans, our divisions are making us Europeans weak, and it doesn't have to be that way, we've already got the institution in place with the EU, it's just a matter of doing reforms to it and giving it the powers in certain areas that it can protect our interest better.

Germany got blindsided in the energy sector when they lost access to Russian gas. Im not super interested in their opinions on energy policy. Edit: Holy didn't expect this to blow up. I wanted to say I do understand that the current state of German nuclear was a result of policies from the late 90s early 2000s and that these power stations take years to construct. It just seems bad in hindsight considering nuclear could of been a cleanish power source for Germany's green focus that also provides a sufficient amount of power which their solar and wind initiatives can lack in while also not having them be reliant as heavily on direct adversaries for their energy needs.

@ayoCC
@ayoCC 12 днів тому
bureaucracy has become a buzzword. It needs to become more specific. Bureaucracy in a negative sense is when no one takes responsibility, taking longer for the same outcome, and holding back necessary action and creating a crisis due to slow legislation. The crisis we're facing is China abusing european free trade by doing heavy handed government interventionist economic choices for the last decades, and we cannot ignore that anymore. Europes prosperity wasn't built on that type of intervention, many were afraid of it, but we know now that a strong government backing in the correct areas that can actually grow is a force multiplier. If you give factory space and research grants to e.g. green industries to thrive, you're going to accelerate that development. We also learned, if we trade and enrich authoritarian regimes, they won't get better, they just grow into distopian kingdoms. It's extremely important that prosperity and progress comes at the conditions of freedom and fairness.
@MechaOrangeStudios
@MechaOrangeStudios 12 днів тому
"Europe's prosperity wasn't built on that type of intervention" Whatever you think about future policy, this is inaccurate. Ha-Joon Chang has shown that European countries were hugely protectionist during the colonial era and often prevented their colonies from trading with any other nation but themselves. And even modern-day France still manipulates the currencies of 14 African countries through the CFA franc, which ensures preferential trade for France. The Elf-Acquitaine scandal revealed the millions that were spent in French bribes to African leaders to maintain this arrangement.

@@MechaOrangeStudios That doesn't just apply to the colonial era - and in any case, only 5 or 6 European countries had significant overseas colonies. In the 50's and 60's, Western European governments exercised far greater control over the economy than their modern-day successors. This included direct state aid and protectionism, and also monetary policy - not just interest rates but other measures such as credit controls that are now unknown in most industrialised economies. And this was a period of strong economic growth. Some of it was recovery from World War II, and some was due to hugely expensive colonies gaining independence. But even after allowing for those factors, most European economies enjoyed what we would think of as remarkably high growth from the end of the war to the mid 70's. France calls them the 'glorious thirty' years, but you see similar results for other oountries such as the Netherlands, Spain and UK. This was not just a European phenomenon. Relatively interventionist economic policies and similar high growth were also seen in other industrialised countries such as the USA and Japan. Modern economic opinion has shifted against 1960's-style intervention, and not without reason. I'm not here to argue for or against it as a policy, but there can be no argument that it was the policy during Europe's greatest gains in prosperity, from before the industrial revolution to about 50 years ago.

Bureaucracy is the deep state and deep state is people who have families, loans and business interests and who want to keep their relatively easy and well paid jobs to send their kids to best schools, live lavish lifestyle, etc. And people who work in bureaucracy are usually well organised and well connected to local and national organisations and institutions and if you as a pm or president attempt to reduce the bureaucracy they will smear your name in the media, organise protests against you and eventually destroy you and your political career and in extreme cases even assassinate you so once a country has rolled out and expanded the bureaucracy then it’s very difficult to roll it back and reduce it. These are people who have their local and national interests and they don’t want these interests to go to hell and will defend them. We’ve seen it time and time again throughout history. @RichardHoogstad contrary to popular belief i doubt how much Trump would actually try to gut NATO in the end. Even more than that, if Trump really decided to try and seriously diminish NATO i seriously doubt how much Congress, The State Department, Pentagon, and the general bureaucracy would allow it. @@chickenfishhybrid44 Europe has followed America in almost everything since the war, I dont think Americans who think that - especially Trumpists - understand exactly what a less American-centric world than now would mean for their daily lives - less dependence and demand for American goods, so less exports, less economic growth, and eventually some decline of quality of life.

Great suggestion, I would also wanna know what the US gets in return. I bet Zelensky already sold out his complete country. The price of "freedom" is kinda high! But with Crimea, and parts of Donetsk and Luhansk in Russian hands, Zelesnky hasn't got much to bargain with. He really needs to retake some important territories or it's over. I highly doubt the Ukraine could get another capital injection if this offensive fails. (Which it's already kinda looking at to be and the US is just wasting tax dollars if I'm really really honest). If Zelensky is smart which I'm doubting more and more, just look how many generals he fired since the start of the war, he would start peace talks with Russia and maybe he'll be able to get some parts back.

Shall I go on? I get that countries put their interests first, but do not try to make it look like anything else. I don't see how a strong Europe would be helping the US right now. However draining Europe's funds, that sounds a lot more profitable. So I'm happy that you think of us as partners, but maybe send that memo to your leaders and CEOs. :) As it stands, many people living in the EU see the US as a problem, not as bad others true, but still. The United States has a unitary executive making foreign policy that is backed by the largest economy and largest military in the world. U.S. growth has been far outpacing that of the EU. Macron's plans are simply unworkable when Europe is 27 different nations and not a supranational government which can set a course over the objections of its constituent members and citizens. Economically, the U.S. grew at 2.5 percent in 2023, while the EU saw no growth. These figures are not aberrations, but.a structural feature of low growth in Europe. Absent a fundamental changes across Europe, these differences will magnify over years and decrease the power of Europe vis-a-vis the U.S. As for mediating between the U.S. and China, that seems like a policy for the past 20 years not the next 20 years. China's population is already decreasing and is estimated to fall by 800 million people by 2100. That will cause significant economic pressures that China is already facing to escalate. A genuinely bold European policy would state the case to match the United States not play off two larger nations against each other.

Europe is a mass of contradictions. They've been relying on US protection since the end OF WWII. They've refused to adequately fund their own defense needs even though the US has pleaded with them to do so. Yet they constantly complain about their dependency on the USA. Now Russia has invaded Ukraine, and that's somehow the USA's fault, too. The US has guaranteed European peace for 75 years, but we are told by the Europeans that we're unreliable partners and that we only care about ourselves. Well, Germany was warned by the US that their reliance on Russian energy was a mistake, and that has proven to be true, but Germany chose to ignore those warnings. Afterward, America stepped up and supplied desperately needed LNG to Europe, but it gets no thanks for that either. The French are the biggest hippocrites of all. For decades, they've been fighting in West Africa and relying on the American logistical and technical support that they lack. Still, Macron never has a kind word to spare for the USA. Certainly, the USA looks out for its own interests, as all nations do, but it has also been very generous and protective towards Europe as well. Europe has a lot of problems, many of its own making, but needs the USA to blame in order to deflect blame from themselves.

I agree with everything here except the naivity towards China. I understand that not everything Macron has done or stands for domestically is popular among the French voters, but I hope who-ever follows Macron will be as good for European strategy as he is. We need this version of France in Europe, we need visions for a stronger and more influential Europe.

I think the Ukraine war is one of the dumbest adventures the EU has ever embarked upon. We´re responsible for this war too, by sponsoring the coup that overthrew Yanukovich. I am not anti-EUropean, I think a United Europe is an eventual aim, but that doesn´t mean everything the EU does is good, or that "saving the Ukraine is saving the continent".

for all Macron's bluster, the US, one country thousands of miles away, has dwarfed all of Europe combined in terms of military aid to Ukraine. And many countries in Europe have sent more military aid per capita than France. I don't care about words, I want to see action. If Macron wants to lead an independent Europe, then he better have France increase military spending and monumentally increase its military aid to Ukraine

You point out many truths (except I'm not certain he can run for a 3rd term) and you ask a very relevant question. My take is that developed nations that enjoy the things you point out cannot become complacent and must find ways to keep those "luxuries", some of which are not just materialistic or tangible benefits, but also freedoms and stability. In today's global economy, competition is fierce. So it's best to keep looking for opportunities that will grow your wealth and power because the best outcome a country may achieve in the face of competition and threats after all is just remaining remaining relevant or mid-tier.
