Seems conflicting, but it actually isn't, haha. What my point in the last video was is that they desperately need a good default browser on Windows that they can built stuff on top of, like Windows Hello, Cortana, Inking, Sets, etc. I'm sure they would have preferred if that browser used a rendering engine Microsoft could control completely (old Edge), but since that failed to become popular, they will try to build the same stuff on top of Chromium now, I think

There's a beta already, and sorry to inform. The bad performance seems to be a chromium problem. I have the impression the edge chromium beta launches, runs and uses as much ram as chrome. I didn't used edge anyways because no dev these days bother to test their sites on edge, but I admired its performance. I know it is a problem from Chromium but so far the only Chromium browser that is less slow that i've tried is Opera. It's still not blazing fast like Edge, and uses more ram too, but its not the wallbrick chrome/edge chromium are.

So, if Edge uses Chromium... then Why wouldn't people just directly use Chrome? It all seems like a step backwards to me. Microsft could have got a share of the Browser market if they had marketed Edge with it's original name - Spartan. There were lot of fanfollowing for Spartan when it was announced, but at the last moment, Microsoft renamed it to Edge, and then kept the Internet Explorer logo. Many people still think Edge and Internet Explorer are the same, thus destroying any chance for Edge to succeed due to Internet Explorer's reputation.
@captainz9
@captainz9 5 років тому
Agreed, Edge is nowhere near the ugliness that IE was, but instead of getting away from the IE branding ("e" icon) they basically just made it a more stylized "e" - naturally a lot of people think they're the same. They would have been better off with the Spartan branding.

Well , I don‘t think many people care what engine is behind the browser , in fact, most people don‘t even now what it is. @JohnSmith-sk7cg 5 років тому
RAM usage in Chromium-based browsers (including Chrome itself) is largely due to sandboxing. Every tab is sandboxed from every other tab which means that it's defacto acting like separate instances of the program running. This also includes duplicate copies of all browser plugins etc. This is good for security since code is isolated from both the OS and other sites in neighboring tabs/windows. It's good for stability as one hung tab or crashed process generally won't take down other tabs or the entire browser. Liberal RAM use by programs in general is also the norm as it's quicker to load/keep in memory everything you might need than to rely on accessing the hard drive in real time. Modern OS memory management works with programs like web browsers to relinquish RAM as needed so there's really no downside to this approach. If unused RAM is there, there's little reason to not take advantage of it.

While it's true that they're one of the major contributing organizations to developing standards, they don't simply define things themselves. They (along with other platforms) often contribute reference implementations for potential specs which are then tested and influence what the final standard will be, but that's the same as how Mozilla, Node, etc contribute reference implementations for all proposed specs. They have gotten a lot of flack recently for the autoplaying audio debacle, but the web audio API was only recently standardized - whatever they do with applications that were made before the standard existed is kind of fair game as it as generally a hack to begin with. Generally speaking though, they do a very good job at implementing standards quickly and compliantly - Chrome is also one of the first to implement proposed standards (again almost always following spec so far as it has been defined) so developers can start testing with it. Check CanIUse or the HTML5 test and Chrome has always gotten the best compliance scores. Overall though, this move is kind of a net negative for web standards as even if they keep following them we won't have as much variety in reference implementations (fewer engines => fewer reference implementations) so the final spec will likely be less well tested. Additionally more users will be susceptible to whatever Chromium bugs come up, so security-wise it's also kind of a bad move, but if you're going to attack Chrome don't do it for web standards.

I just used edge cuz some of the features were pretty cool(Drawing on the web page, setting tabs aside, the home page with all the relevant news, The drop down button to get a preview of all open webpages, the tab management when you open way too many tabs, the hover for preview, volume on/off without switching tabs, pin to start, etc.) .
