Like every race series, NASCAR periodically updates the rules which define the cars. Unlike most race series, NASCAR's roots go back nearly 100 years, and so does some of the technology. But the 2022 update is huge: independent rear suspension, 6-speed sequential transaxles, 18" wheels with wider, lower profile tires, coil over suspension.

The difficulty would be trying to provide a level playing field when you have vehicles that have vastly different capabilities, and preventing people who can just buy a better car. The Champ Car endurance series and the 24 hour Lemons are kinda the closest we have to such a league, because there's a heavy limit on how much you can spend to overbuild your car, yet you can still do whatever you want (within said budget) because its very unlikely for such a cheap car to reach dangerous speeds.

@@justkidshavinfun764 Same as any kind of track racing, really. Nascar, touring cars, V8 Supercars and all the rest. It starts small with modified road cars. Then they start getting more and more intense, teams want to go faster and push for more modifications to the chassis and over time they're allowed to replace the whole front end. Then the back end. Then just the pillars need to be stock. Then you end up with fully custom chassis designs, which get rolled into a single standard platform. Some teams complain that more and more money gets thrown around by richer teams who can spend money on really crazy parts for a big advantage, so new tech gets limited and then... you have a track full of cars with identical chassis, engines, drivetrains and suspension and at best some real-world-inspired fake bodies. That means the only real ways to win are more reliable cars (expensive) and finding loopholes in the rules, or all down to racing strategies (fuel, tyres etc.). All of which are super boring to an audience that already doesn't get to see anything like a 'real' car on track. I'd wager real money that pro drift series will see exactly the same changes in the next couple decades as well

The framework for the current gen of NASCAR stock cars can be traced to about 1965-1970 when the field pretty much built cars to the same spec. The engines and aero have obviously changed, but the basic pattern has been the same since. Tube frame, pushrod V8, solid rear axle with Chevy truck arms, panhard bar, Ford 9" rear, clutchless 4 speed h-pattern manual based off a Ford toploader transmission, 15" wheels with 11" brakes discs. The whole package was relevant to the US car market from the 60s up to the early 90s. This change has long been due.

Excellent improvements. The drivers will love the sequential shifter. Been a standard in Rally cars for decades and motorcycles for ever. If you know your machine you can shift without the clutch. I start my 1100 Yammie in first and after that just "float the gears" as the OTR truckers call it. That's shifting without using the clutch by matching the gears at perfect mesh points using a fraction of a second of no-stress on the driveline by using the throttle. I can run up or down the gearbox with shifts in the .380 to .410 thousandths of a second range all day. It saves your clutch as well. The boys are going to like the new cars. Independent suspension will take a little getting used to after the massive tube axles but they are a huge improvement in handling and especially tuning. You want better stagger? You're gonna get it and love it.

One problem I noticed in the video made me think about something. At the 6:00 mark it shows the solid rear and the wheels stay perfectly upright as it sways left up and right down to right up and left down etc, but on a solid rear like that the wheels actually stay exactly in line with the axle, meaning the whole thing, wheels and all rotates. On a large banking turn the solid rear would rotate slightly, keeping the wheels oriented upright relative to the pavement, so that the whole thing was keeping the wheels contacting the pavement evenly inside and out of each tire. Perhaps an IRS might try to do what the visualization at 6:00 is showing, keeping the wheels oriented upright relative to the sky, and create an uneven wear pattern on large banking turns. Just a thought, haven't seen them testing on a large oval yet but I'm sure this is all well thought out. Just thinking about the large, smooth banking turns in the ovals seems like this is one situation where a SRA would be well suited. On normal roads an IRA is almost mandatory given the varied dynamic situations etc.

Hell, Id be shocked if someone didnt show up with a Ferrari or a McLaren. Id honestly be all for it, the racing wouldnt be as close because of the wildly different aero but it would be amazing to watch, it would also give us better cars for us to buy for ourselves so itd be a win win. actually the chassis will now be the same for all teams, so its actually bringing the field much closer together and putting more into the at track crew and drivers hands, and less the engineers at the shop. and according to daniel saurez (who would know because he moved from jgr to a small team) most of the difference in speed between the teams is not in the engine, setup, or aero/body, but in the chassis. ignorance.

"Turning right for a change" isn't really the point of speedway races like NASCAR. Coming from an American who is more a fan of circuit racing, NASCAR's roots go way back to when stock car racing was, quite literally, modified stock cars on a dirty oval track that was just slapped together with a few cheap pieces of construction equipment. The modern day super speedways that the Winston Cup championship races on carries on that tradition, but you'll find numerous lower tiers all racing under the NASCAR brand, just like Formula One has Formulas Two, Three, E, and Karting racing under it. You work your way up from the lowest tiers, and if you've got the stuff for it, you'll eventually make it up into the Winston Cup championship just like all the names in Formula One had to do in the respective junior series to F1. There's still NASCAR "stock" car races happening on oval dirt tracks quite literally on a weekly basis all over the country here in the States. I used to live not too far away from one such track when I lived in Arkansas and you could hear the motors roaring nightly every single summer weekend.

@@hochhaul You really can't use stock cars safely for this kind of racing. They have to be heavily modified for roll cages and crash structures, the suspension setup is completely different, the wheels brakes and tires are different, and the whole drivetrain is different to handle high continuous loads. The only stock thing about a professional racing stock car is the body panels, the whole idea of trying to keep it stock is nonsensical because you can never safely race a stock car.

I have seen amazing sports teams too..right place at the right time..that Bo Jackson run at the coliseum. Lakers dream team. Mets world series team. I could go on for too long and will. Then my friends have friends..next your talking formula one drivers and crew chiefs..i also spent time with the Fuel Coupe. The biggest names in top fuel would stop what they were doing to come out and talk to my older buddies and shake their hands at winter nationals..amazing..they don't ever ask about me lol...old timers that first ran nitro and blowers..I gave up the ride in the pace car at Nascar race in Fontana to my buddy cause I don't want to be coming off the track when it all hell brakes loose.
