This is the 14” M1 Pro MacBook Pro, and as someone has been using the 13” M1 MacBook Pro since it was released, I am super excited - because we finally have a real MacBook Pro. You see, the 13” wasn’t really a MacBook Pro, it was kind of a MacBook Pro Light - and with this new model Apple took a lot of the things that frustrated me about the 13” MacBook Pro and fixed them. So let’s put these two - head-to-head, see if the 14” is worth the extra money, talk about whether you should upgrade if you already have the 13” - and we also need to talk about this whole notch situation!

for me, I'm ok with the macbook pro M1 13 "because I'm satisfied. I don't have to switch to the pro 14" it will waste a lot of money and the apple company will be happy😂😂😂

Given the blow out prices on the base M1, I bought both, and tried a few hubs to gain ports. The Macbook Pro base seems to have enough power to run everything I want to do, at the same time,, but I like more screen real estate, and I'm going to change the Mini I haven't opened to 512/16 gigs. Each machine will get about half the use, and I actually like the touchbar. I'm a Windows guy, but the new silicon defies conventions for ram we use in the windows world. I'll end up running my Windows machine as a server. The pro and max have their places, but alot of what I'm using isn't ready for OS Monterey. A very small part of me wants to exchange the 13 base for a 14 pro, but I'm trying to keep it quiet. 13inch M1 battery life and weight are the bomb ! Podcasts, remote music production, bus powered Focusrite interface, in the thousand dollar range.

@@stevennoriega1587 make sure you go to your nearest Best Buy or Apple store or any tech store with M1 16 on display so you can check it out, note 2k dollars can be wasted easily

Set a budget guys.. Go by budget. Unless a business can pay for it or it's your full time job I don't see myself being able to afford the 14 inch. If you have the money why not! But m1 macbook pro it is for me

Been watching your videos since M1 made its debut and I enjoy your vids very much! I got the 13” M1 MacBook Pro with 512gb of SSD and 8gb back in January at a great discount provided by my university and coming from a 2015 MacBook Pro it was day and night. I love my M1 Pro and am more than happy with it! Still insanely fast and battery is just magical! Although I do wish Macs supported engineering software such as solid works it’s alright for now. It does support arduino and Matlab though. But once solidworks is natively supported on M1 Macs it’s a wrap for me and, I imagine, other engineers. These M1’s are no joke! Anyways, great content and I will continue to support your channel!

Thank you for the review, very detailed, very clear and well researched. 14" is definitely an upgrade on almost all areas, except battery life, however, for the double price, it's difficult to justify for an upgrade from 13 to 14 inch. I'm quite happy with the 13" mac book pro and 1 thunderbolt with a good quality usb C hub is fine with me, and the other on power supply.

Good review man. I’m still sticking with my 13” M1. It may only be 8GB with 512 SSD but it does everything I need flawlessly. Simple web browsing, email, and watching videos. If I do have any regrets is that I didn’t go with the 2020 Air for cheaper. 😅

Thank you for your informative videos, I would be lost without you! I am wanting to buy an external monitor for my MacBook Pro 14” - and you said it can handle 60 hertz… does this mean I shouldn’t get a 75 hertz as an external monitor? I do graphic design, so a good screen is important! However, I’m also on a tight budget! 😬 Recommendations?

If one intended to buy a spec'd out 13" M1 Pro (think its around $1700) then the base 14" Pro $2000) is a better choice, if you want all the extra stuff as well

@@TechGearTalk Wow, I just read my comment again and realised it sounds more like a question than a statement. I think the base 14" Pro is incredible value if you wanted a 512GB storage 16GB ram 13" M1. For the $300 extra, the new screen, updated design, more ports, fast charge, more performance is a steal at that increase in price. But if all you wanted was a 265GB storage 8GB ram 13" Pro, then the 14" is not worth it.

I just went with M1 since I got a $250 discount on 8-512gig set up. Since I only do occasional lightroom edit, web browsing and word processing, M1Pro would be just overkill for me.

Nice comparison. Thank you. I just bought a 13” M1. Even with all the 14” improvements, going to stick with my 13” for a year or two. And perhaps get the next latest iteration of the 14”. I know it would be crazy to ask, but what do you guess Apple might do with 2022 release? After all the new things they have given this year. I think Face ID might be one. Anything else?

Love your reviews. I have a late 2012 Retina display 15” MBP and 27-inch Apple Retina Display. Has served me well but need to upgrade. I do graphic design for print with Adobe CC (Illustrator, Acrobat, InDesign, Photoshop) and MS Office Suite. I almost bought the 13” M1 MBP 3 weeks ago but couldn’t decide between 8GB/256GB and 16GB/512GB models. Now considering the 14” M1 Pro. I was looking forward to a smaller and lighter weight MBP for when I travel but wasn’t too pleased with just two USB-C ports. I have always considered myself a Pro user but I don’t do anything with video. Which model is a better fit for this kind of work? 14” M1 Pro Base model or 13” M1 16GB RAM 512GB SSD?

I upgraded from similar spec 2013 MacBook. However I was having issues running Lightroom and premiere. I went with the 14” m1 pro base chip with 1TB storage. I think of it as a 5 year investment

Thanks !!! This definitely helps my decision, I need that dual monitor support and the price difference isn’t that great when comparing similar configurations. I was going to settle for another brand of laptop just for that monitor support, however the build on the new 14” MacBook Pro seems much better than the competition, plus I can expect much longer support from apple.

The new M1Pro/Max chips are clearly optimized for video and graphics performance especially given the hardware accelerated modules for specific tasks. Based on all the analysis and reviews, the new M1Pro/Max options crush video/graphics work and are probably overkill for "office/productivity" work. How do the new M1Pro/Max handle tasks like number crunching of large data sets and running simulations/modeling? In my past experience, these seem are memory dependent but don't necessarily make use of capabilities from GPUs. Would a 16GB M1 be good enough for this type of work? Or do you recommend upgrading to the M1Pro and getting more memory? Thanks and keep up the great work!

Thank you. The advantage of the M1 Pro is that you can get more CPU cores AND you have more high-performance cores. So it comes down to how much this performance is worth to your workflow. If it's something you do all day, every day, and you're looking at one computer that can do it in 3 minutes, and another that can do it in 1 minute - I'm upgrading, because that consistent time saving. Hope that makes sense.

I'm leaning toward the 16" MBP M1Pro with 32GB memory: gives me higher CPU performance, a larger screen so I don't have to squint, and some small "future proof" protection. Not convinced the extra GPU cores will make a difference for me and for my use cases. A few hundred dollars over the lifetime of the machine (3+ years) is inconsequential to the time savings.

@@Fluffisnoterm I ended up getting the 14" MBP M1 Pro with 16GB memory and an M1 MacMini. I decided to off-load some video processing to the MacMini to take advantage of a desktop set-up (external monitor, cameras, and other peripherals). With this set-up, I focus all of my analytic activities on the laptop. So far, no complaints and the M1 Pro 16GB is fine. My main reason for not buying anything beyond this is because I will not be able to make use of the extra hardware and GPU cores. Apple clearly defines "pro" as a video-editor and I'm not in that use case. The benefit of having a laptop and desktop set-up is that I have a fully capable workstation for when I'm mobile. Having a second computer helps provide some back-up in case the other is unavailable. I'm running a small business so I can't afford to be "offline" for long. If you can wait, you might want to see what the next generation of products Apple releases this year (2022) and to see if the next versions of laptops will be aimed at "pro" users who aren't video creators (think something in-between the entry-level M1 MacBook Pro and a 14" MacBook Pro M1 Pro/Max). Not sure if Apple will have a product aimed at this group, but it might be worth waiting if you can. Otherwise, listen to the advice from Sagi (@TechGearTalk) on buying the best machine for you. I'm moving more towards an approach of buying less powerful machines (and less costly) but more frequently especially since we don't quite know what Apple's release schedule looks like. Hope this helps!

Get the M1 MacBook Pro with 512 GB storage if you are just learning and doing it as hobby It'll be tremendous. Save up the extra bucks for any other investments.

I suspect that the reason for the Notch that no one is talking about is that Apple wants FaceID, but at the same time couldn't make it into this shipment and had to ship like this anyways. These 2 MACs - 14" & 16" are likely super small volumes compared to the Macbook Air and 13" Pro - and those were already using existing chassis. This custom screen will need a huge order commitment from their ODM to secure the order at a reasonable price, so I'd guess next generation will have the exact same screen, but with Face ID. Also on the keyboard, that seems obvious, again, that they are trying to leverage the same chassis for different keyboard types - hence the black back. Not every region can just change keys, some need to change layouts - like in Europe - so one can just have different keyboard plates, and use a common chassis for all regions. It just makes sense to leverage as many like-for-like parts as possible, and since these high-end macs are lower volume products, Apple is likely just stretching the life span of each component to secure better commitments from the various ODMs in China and elsewhere.

as a student I currently have a 2019 macbook air, its been thermal throttling a lot and i think it's a good time to get a new macbook. I do light video editing for film class, a bit of coding and use it mostly for school work and content consumption, i personally do not like the touch bar but i can live with it. A better display and other features certainly makes it more appealing, but I don't know if i should spend an extra 700 dollars getting a 14 inch for what i need, do you have any suggestions for what i should get? Thanks a lot!

IF you don‘t necessarily need the Power of an M1 machine, i would Recommend trying a repair of your current MBA. Maybe it‘s just all the dust accumulating in the case. Otherwise i recommend the M1 MBP Base Model. Of you Wang 16 gig RAM and 512 gb ssd i would Go for the MBP M1 Pro instead.

@@jojo77567 thanks, but my MBA is currently using a intel chip with 2 cores, and also the fan is not connected to the heat sink, so it’s just frying itself. would be a good idea to get a 14 inch with better specs and not worry about having to change it

M1 MacBook Air is the best bang for the buck, for what you need IMHO. At least over here, I'm currently seeing some massive sales on the M1 Air, making the price leap to the 14" pro even greater. I’m not using any intensive software at the moment I just started college mayor IT , liked your video and wanted to buy one of the new m1s 14 inch. It’s pricey for dad but he said he’ll do it. I believe MacBook Air is sufficient for you. But since you are thinking about the 14, the base model is more than sufficient. I am using it for engineering school and nothing comes close to slow it down in any way.

With all the comparison videos I watched there is always missing for me how relative the Power comparison is. As I recall from last year, when the M1 MBP was reviewed: everyone raved about the power and speed. For someone who would edit one video a week, the M1 should be more than enough, or am I wrong? Just asking for myself, because I want to upgrade from my intel based one and I honestly like the Touchbar and HATE the new M1Pro MBP body design. For that task: is it that much of a difference?

If it’s a fairly simple video edit - without a lot of vfx and complex stabilization and grading - the M1 will work great!

Thank you for this comparison. I just bought my M1 Macbook pro 13" with 16GB ram and 512GB memory last month and it still is powerful and responsive with everything that I do (I do PhD research, research and consultancy work, statistical analyses, coding in STATA and MATLAB, use MS office apps, and do lectures via zoom). I don't use the touchbar as much but I'm not bothered by it since I use the Logitech MX Keys. Using one external monitor is also no problem with me as well as using a Lyare 16-in-one USB hub. Probably the 14" macbook pro is not for someone like me, but it is for someone who is more of a "pro" user.

Most of your tasks (STATA), MS Office, Zoom, Chrome, Safari, Git, Python, etc.. applications run only one core. So there won't be any difference in term of speed compared to the new macs. You can check with single core test in Geekbench to see for yourself. The new Macbook Pro is for those who are doing intensive graphic related or multi core applications (i.e: Xcode). There is a trade off of these, heat and battery life. They may save you a couple of seconds but cost you up to 50% more in terms of battery life.

Also, in the country where I am living, it takes 2-3 months for new Apple products to be available and buying from online sellers costs more. It's also not just an additional $200 in our case, it's more than that (probably because of higher Apple Tax that we have to pay for those outside the US). And $200 is already a big chuck of money.

I just ordered the same laptop he has after convincing myself I don’t need the 14” M1 Pro. It’s actually a $300 difference with taxes an all. All that for some extra power, ports and display? I will admit I wanted the 14” so bad that the MBP 13” was not even an option. But I only need the laptop for video editing and photo editing. Something a basic M1 MacBook Air can do. Very good deal

2 things I don't like are that they removed the Touch Bar (loved it) and also removed the "MacBook Pro" logo from the front. Why? I definitely notice the improvements to the speakers. Fantastic.

I love everything about the 14 inch macbook pro, only the change from the touchbar to the buttons is something that doesnt get into my head how that should be superior. The touchbar is such a useful gadget, i dont wanna miss. But you have to make some sacrifices if you want the newest model. I just dont understand it how someone likes those buttons more than the touchbar. With the touchbar you can too so many things, with the buttons not...

I’m just a student and can’t choose between the 13” m1 macbook pro and 14” m1 pro macbook pro. What I use the most are primarily just research, Rstudio, SPSS and python. Hello Imran! I too had a similar question, when I was planning to buy one😁 As per my experience, I'd suggest you to go with the latest Gen M1 Pro Processor, but if you have a limited budget, try to get the M1 MacBook Air or Pro M1 with atleast 16GB Ram. I have had the experience of using Python, SQL and some other heavy applications on my MacBook Air M1, with 16GB Ram version, and 256GB storage. For the extra storage, thanks to Mr.TGT, I bought the Samsung T7 Gen2 Portable SSD at a very good price (@Amazon) and way less than the price for the storage upgrade at Apple (also depends if you have no issues in carrying a slim SSD, and you'd like to keep it minimal). Honestly, I didn't have any issues at all doing all my professional work and projects on my MacBook Air M1; it's slim, light, has excellent battery life and it's still getting updated and handles everything smoothly👌🏻 Lastly, if your budget allows, go for the latest M1 Pro MacBooks, otherwise search for a refurbished model with at least 16GB Ram (better for multitasking), and get the Apple Care+. Best of luck for your purchase ahead👍🏻✌🏻

I upgraded from the MacBook Air which I still think is a great laptop but I used 3-5 Remote Desktop connections at the same time. So I wanted more power . I bought the MacBook Pro m1 pro 14” and for me it feels definitely faster like 50% faster and snappy. But But I would love to see a professional comparison like what u just did with the M1 13 inch

Yo what is the difference in thickness between the 14” MBP display and the 13” iPad Pro XDR display? ie I would take a slightly thicker lid with the iPad Pro wide display camera and bezels over a notch: I would even move the speakers to the display ala the iPas Pro to reduce the thickness of the base of the MBP. iPad Pro speakers sound awesome!

they are "technically" the same thickness in the center, but the 13" has tapered edges so the 14" is thicker all the way around

I think I'm good with my 13" 2020 MacBook pro. I went from a 2011 spec'd out 16" macbook pro and I'm pleased with the m1 chip with no dropped frames while editing. I should've waited for another year for 14" :(
