Rio recounts the story when he stopped a training session and screamed at Berbatov before the Champions League Final.
Rio Gavin Ferdinand OBE (born 7 November 1978) is an English former professional footballer who played as a centre-back, and is now a television pundit for BT Sport. He played 81 times for the England national team between 1997 and 2011, and was a member of three FIFA World Cup squads. He is one of the most decorated English footballers of all time and regarded by many as one of England's greatest ever players.
Ferdinand began his football career playing for various youth teams, finally settling at West Ham United where he progressed through the youth ranks and made his professional Premier League debut in 1996. He became a fan favourite, winning the Hammer of the Year award the following season. He earned his first senior international cap in a match against Cameroon in 1997, setting a record as the youngest defender to play for England at the time. His achievements and footballing potential attracted Leeds United and he transferred to the club for a record-breaking fee of £18 million. He spent two seasons at the club, becoming the team captain in 2001, before he joined Manchester United in July 2002 for around £30 million, breaking the transfer fee record once more.
At Manchester United, he won the Premier League, his first major club honour, in a successful first season at the club. In September 2003, he missed a drugs test and was banned from football for eight months from January until September 2004, causing him to miss half a Premier League season, Manchester United's FA Cup triumph, and the Euro 2004 international competition. Upon his return, he established himself in the Manchester United first team and received plaudits for his performances, featuring in the PFA Team of the Year four times in five years. More club success followed with another Premier League win in the 2006-07 season and a Premier League and UEFA Champions League double the following year. His career at United, in which he won six Premier League titles and 14 trophies, ended when his contract expired in 2014, and he subsequently joined Queens Park Rangers where he played for just one season before being released from the club as a result of their relegation from the Premier League. He announced his retirement from professional football on 30 May 2015.
In September 2017, Ferdinand announced his intention to become a professional boxer, partly to help him cope with the death of his wife. His brother, Anton, also a centre-back, last played for St Mirren. Former England international striker Les Ferdinand and former Dagenham & Redbridge midfielder Kane Ferdinand are his cousins.

@JohnnyHooker1 Jealous is certainly not the right word here. I think when you achieve a lot more than someone else you can't be jealous of that other person whether more or less talanted (which is an opinion anyway there's no particular right or wrong unless it's absolutely blatant, there may have been certain areas Berba had more talant but likewise with everyone everyone has certain things they're better at than others, but you're judged om what you do with what you've got). Rio was just saying he wanted Berba to do better because he had a lot of fails at ManUtd with a team that had great potential under a top manager as well. Rio would've had less disappointments in that period and Berba would've spent more than 4 years of his entire career at a giant club. Rio was a regular starter at a giant club for a dozen years and even before then he was getting a lot of adulation whilst at other clubs with good history & picked for 2 England WorldCup squads. Both bought by ManUtd for about the same amount but Berbatov was a flop at ManUtd.

Berba was one of those effortless Geniuses. You see everyone working hard to become good but those people dont need to because they are naturally that good. So when you see them taking things casually in training you feel like they aren't doing anything, but the fact is they don't have to. They are just that good. Because of which people misunderstand them. Same thing is happening with Ozil also.
@MiguelBaptista1981

That's why Berba only won two league titles in his life, both at Man U when he wasn't the main man. Same for Ozil. One Title. With Real Madrid, and he needed the best team Real had in the past 20 years and probably the best coach, the only one that disrupted Barcelona's tiki taka team. Bla bla bla. Talk and romanticizing about "effortless" results don't give results. History prooves that. Every great player with numerous trophies had to put his blood and sweat in field.

Berbatov was a bit mis understood. Fergie didnt quite know how to play him. So much ability but you have to build your team for him and United just wasn't prepared to always do it. Robbie Keane is a classic example. I remeber seeing him at Spurs and it worked because Robbie basically moved and worked for Berba. He was electric and selfless for Berba because he knew all you had to do was get it to him around the box and things will happen. United didnt quite play Berba in his correct position until later on. Ferdinand can shout at Berbatov about work rate all he wants, the man has more talent, genius, class, skill and technique in his toenails than Ferdinand has in his whole body. Berbas style of play was based on moving around slowly because he felt it gave him a better understanding of what was going on, he was such a composed player with amazing control he could afford to be lazy. Ferdinand fails to understand that, probably due to the fact he was a defender and they often lack the class of midfielders and forwards.

Berbatov's style of play only works when you have Rooneys. Ferdinands, Evras, Nevilles - players that will work until they collapse of exhaustion. 11 players with the mentality of Berbatov would be walked over by an aggressive side. @wannarockful "Top goalscorer" lol a quarter of Berbaflop's goals came in ONE game!! 1 meaningless 7-1 game that ManUtd win anyway without his goals. Tevez scored more important goals for ManUtd in 2 years than Berbatov scored in double the time Ferguson should've never bought Berbatov then we would've kept Tevez and therefore been way more successful particularly from 2009/10 to 2011/12 just compare the 2 player's careers, goals, trophies, contributions etc... Berbatov only scored in 11 games in his 'Best of a bad bunch season 2010/11' bare in mind ManUtd weren't far away from a Treble so they played a lot of games but Berba lost ManUtd the FAcup (the 2nd time he single handedly lost an FAcup semi-final for ManUtd). Hence why Berbatov never won the FAcup, nor ChampionsLeague. Nor did he win back-to-back PL titles with ManUtd, I think those 3 things are huge failures. Very few former ManUtd players who were only managed by Ferguson failed to win back-to-back PL titles and apart from the officials in 2009/10 I blame Berbatov for ManUtd just missing out on the record 4 in a row. When he was only asked to deliver for 1 game after Rooney put the team in such a great position but got injured late March and Berbatov & Rooney never scored again for the rest of the season when Rooney got injured he was on 34 goals, Berbatov 12 and that's how they finished the season. Not even Spurs wanted Berba back after that season ManUtd couldn't get rid of him couldn't sell him for anywhere near the amount he was bought for no big club wanted him including ourselves and eventually just didn't care about the price in 2012 sold for 10% what ManUtd paid to Trophyless history Fulham, more Berba's level. Replaced by better player who was actually a genuine top goalscorer 2012/13 (v.Persie). No the reasons Berbatov wasn't picked for 2011 CL final. He never scores against big teams I.e Only 1 goal vs a Top5 team in 4 years at ManUtd. Heavily contributing to his 2 PL title losses with ManUtd. He only scored in 3 ChampionsLeague games in his entire ManUtd career. All in group stage, none in knockouts and none vs an elite CL teams. Rooney, Hernandez & even MichaelOwen had all scored more recently than Berbatov who hadn't scored since Game 32 of 38 in the PL. All 3 had also scored more recently in the ChampionsLeague, several times each in fact (obviously, because Berbatov went 3 whole years without a ChampionsLeague goal late 2008 to late 2011). He's not going to start ahead of Rooney & Hernandez (Hernandez was ManUtd's most important forward that season). Berbatov was also the worst forward to bring on from the bench when thinking of all ManUtd's forwards in the Ferguson years I can't think of a worse forward to come on if we need a goal. If Berba can't score vs ManCity who were getting there but nowhere near Barca's level yet, why should Ferguson be confident playing him vs Barca?? Besides he came on in the 2009 CL final vs Barca and he was terrible. I really don't understand people arguing against this?????

@FootkerSnookball
@FootkerSnookball Рік тому
Wouldn't quite say WorldClass. Afterall he only spent 4 years of his career at a giant club and even with that his departure was overdue he didn't do well at ManUtd and he would've left 2 years before he did if any big team were willing to pay anywhere near what ManUtd had paid for him but not even Spurs wanted him back. He could do some world class pieces of skill (sometimes looked every bit as bad as how good he tried to look if it was pulled off, like the lazy pen vs Everton) and teams who don't care about trophies may like him in their team hence why Fulham did as they've never won a trophy in their history so Berbatov "did well" there, for their standards. Even there he didn't make the sort of impression that for example ClintDempsey did at Fulham. I'd say joining as a relaegation threatened team and getting them to a European final within a couple of years is doing well with clubs like that but Berbatov didn't do anything with Fulham and with Spurs he may have won the MickeyMouseCup but they couldn't qualify for CL. He's never won FAcup or ChampionsLeague or back-to-back league title's even in a Ferguson ManUtd team which is extremely rare. You're right about Tevez. Obviously Berba wasn't the reason Cristiano left he was going to leave anyway but it wouldn't have been much of a loss if ManUtd at least kept Tevez with the other very good players they still had Rooney etc...and a very reliable defence so they only needed another consistent forward with Rooney in 2009/10 like they had the next year with Hernandez. Tevez felt he wasn't appreciated he was a big game player but was treated more like a super sub and regular in only the lesser cups in his 2nd season when he was far more useful than Berba so it would've just been better to not buy Berba at all. I don't see how that great ManUtd team with that great manager aren't more successful than they were from 2009/10 to 2011/12 with Tevez instead of Berbatov and there wouldn't have been those annoying things like just missing out on feats like 4 PL's in a row and losing the PL on GD 2 years later and seeing Chelsea win things they shouldn't when ManUtd were a better more consistent team they underachieved while Berbatov was in the team. And literally Tevez was part of City winning 2012 PL so obviously it wouldn't have happened like that with him at ManUtd.

Ok. I'll take the bait! A very average player doesn't get 312 appearances for a highly successful team, as Man Utd were at the time. Playing 81 times for England wasn't too shabby either. Clearly your judgement needs a little re-calibration!

Ferdinand is a bully probably the most awful teammate ever. I never liked how Man Utd treated Berbatov. His career was flourishing at Tottenham then Man Utd ruined it. I know these types like Ferdinand they always pretend to know better than others and have this berating uncomfortable aura to them. It's annoying. He has this mafia mentality. Very hot-tempered and egotistical too. Vidic is a million times better defender. Ferguson only bought Berbatov so Tottenham couldn't have him. He didn't give a flying f about adapting the soccer play and style with Berbatov in the squad now. He just wanted to have him for himself even if it meant destroying his own career. It was similar to kidnapping or something. I can't even count how many angry moments I had with seeing Ferdinand making dumb mistakes and messing things up. Berbatov was the biggest star Man Utd had and they wasted it. Mistreated by fans, teammates and coach.

@FootkerSnookball
@FootkerSnookball 9 місяців тому
@@Ccveysi He scored in like 11 games in 2010/11 where ManUtd played loads of matches because they weren't far away from the treble so no it's you who doesn't know your facts. So even the season you conveniently decided to bring up, his "best of a bad bunch" season just after he cost ManUtd the record 4 in a row, he still couldn't help himself costing ManUtd yet another cup final/trophy with his misses at 0-0 in the virtual FA final that year vs ManCity and JavierHernandez was ManUtd's most important forward for ManUtd in 2010/11 scored in more games and against all types of teams and in every competition not just PL, only 1 less overall than Berba but a quarter of Berba's goals typical of him were in 1 meaningless game (Blackburn at OldTrafford) that ManUtd win without his goals. He was probably Ferguson's worse signing especially given his pricetag, a flat track bully at the absolute best. Not an important player at all. Can't think of any ManUtd forward in Ferguson era who played more than a couple of seasons who wasn't more important than him and all were not just better starters but all were better at coming off the bench and making impact than he was. I know that because Berbaflop was absolutely useless off the bench. He only scored 1 goal vs a Top5 team in his whole ManUtd career not including CommunityShield (which would only make it 2 anyway, also typical of him both were in stoppage-time when ManUtd were already winning both games). I know plenty of defenders & midfielders with better record than that vs top5 team in the same amount of games played. "Top scorer" lol you say that like he was RVN in 2002/03, Ronaldo in 2007/08 or RVP in 2012/13 when these players actually scored against many different opponents. Just count the difference. Berba wasn't picked in CL final 2011 squad (not just starting lineup, SQUAD) for a reason. He went 3 whole years without a CL goal from late 2008 to late 2011. Never scored in CL knockouts and never scored vs elite CL teams and only scored in 3 CL games for ManUtd in his 4 years at the club. For a player who played in ManUtd's best ever squad AND under Ferguson every year. He failed big time to never win back-to-back PL title's, never win the FAcup and never win the CL. IF HE WAS ACTUALLY GREAT LIKE YOU CLAIM THEY WOULD'VE NEVER FAILED TO DO ANY OF THOSE THINGS LET ALONE ALL OF THEM. They didn't achieve those things because he wasn't an important player simple as that, he couldn't deliver when it mattered, he couldn't deliver vs the big teams which literally cost ManUtd a couple of title's due to zero pts vs title rival and ManUtd lost a much better player in Tevez due to Berba's arrival so it was an even more horrific signing. Just compare the 2 player's careers, honours, goal tallies, contributions etc...chalk & cheese. ManUtd would've been way more successful than they were particularly from 2009/10 to 2011/12 with Tevez instead of Berba. Also Tevez was better than Berba even in the season that you hyped up Berba who didn't score anymore than Tevez but Tevez was playing for slightly worse team at that time. Tevez scored loads of "important" goals for ManUtd way more crucial one's than Berba in half the time Berba was at the club. Tevez even helped ManUtd a lot after he left by scoring loads vs what was still at that time ManUtd's biggest title rival in 09/10 & 10/11 Tevez more of a help to ManUtd even in a City shirt than Berba was whilst representing ManUtd.
