Excellent advice. However, "Bends" are really a sub-category of decompression sickness. The word "bend" comes from the bent position adopted by a person affected by nitrogen decompressing in the joints; it is the position of minimal discomfort in these circumstances. The term "Decompression sickness" covers not only the problems relating to the bends but also those relating to nitrogen bubbles forming in other tissues, most critically in the central nervous system. While getting scuba training I've been told before long haul flights at least a full day is more than recommended. I landed in Djibouti (a country I did not know it exists before that day) because a diver ignored that advice. well, it's factually not necessary to mention, "pressurized" cabin since climbing too high in a Cessna causes the same symptoms.
@sintillate1913
@sintillate1913 Рік тому
Yeah I caught that as well. It can actually be less of a factor in pressurized cabin (which is normally pressurized at the highest at 8000 ft) versus an unpressurized cabin which could be well above 10,000. The AIM says a pilot should wait at least 12 hours prior to flying to altitudes up to 8,000 feet msl if a dive has not required a controlled ascent (nondecompression-stop diving) and at least 24 hours after diving in which a controlled ascent (decompression) is required, so technically it is not normally a factor in a pressurized cabin, unless an emergency depressurization occurs.

@rpavlik1
@rpavlik1 Рік тому
Bummer. 2.5 diopter cylinder is pretty severe, and iirc astigmatism can cause some visual artifacts that aren't easily corrected by glasses - it's basically a directional "stretch" of the eye/lens, so there's an angle to the corrections too. That said, it seems like it shouldn't matter for IFR, but I guess you need vfr first... Not a pilot or an eye doctor.

@Edvin_Nyman
@Edvin_Nyman Рік тому
They don’t reach an altitude that would cause the problems. As long as you don’t increase your altitude up to over 3km after a dive at sea level you won’t really have any problems. But it’s generally just better to wait a couple of hours reduce the risk.

@gasdive
@gasdive Рік тому
Rescue divers don't generally go underwater, so there is no issue. For people like oil rig divers who may need to be evacuated by helicopter, there are helicopters with chambers built in that keep the diver at the right pressure on the way to hospital, and the hospitals have chambers that lock on to the helicopter, allowing transfer and treatment under pressure.

Always use a diving computer and follow its advice, the more if you're having a diving trip and make multiple dives. The computer will record every single one of them and inform you wether it's safe to make another dive, and in which conditions. It will also inform you of the "no fly" time left after your last dive. The rule of thumb is 24h, but it's always a good idea to check your computer. Be VERY suspicious of cheesy diving instructors or guides in some resorts that will assure you that "it's all fine", no reputable diving center or instructor will ever tell you that. Diving is extremely fun and, as long as you follow the rules and get quality training, it's every bit as safe as it is fun.

@strohtaler4698 Рік тому
I assume that diving after flying is positive, since flying will even eliminate more nitrogen from the body (longer flight)
@andreuduran6507
@andreuduran6507 Рік тому
@@strohtaler4698 well, I might be wrong because nitrogen saturation can be a little tough. The thing is that the air that we all breathe is made from about a 79% of nitrogen, but all the nitrogen that we inhale is exhaled, and we only begin to accumulate nitrogen when we dive because the pressure underwater is bigger (for example 2 Atms at 10 meters o 33feet). Then I think that when we fly, we don't get rid of nitrogen because we don't have any in our body. But I can't assure it 100% it's just my opinion based on my knowledge
@gasdive
@gasdive Рік тому
@@strohtaler4698 no, the pressure keeps the nitrogen in solution and harmless. Removing the pressure by going higher lets the nitrogen come out of solution and form bubbles.
