Space tourism has been, almost, nonexistent in the past, but Virgin Galactic, SpaceX and Blue Origin are looking to change that. Still, accessibility to space tourism remains limited to the richest of the rich, with ticket prices ranging from hundreds of thousands of dollars to millions. Development of these space tourism programs is costing these companies billions and each has a different reason for pursuing this, as of yet, unproven market.

Many doubters in the comments. I am sure there were many doubters and skeptics before airplanes came out as well. I'm sure the concept of being able to fly accross the ocean in hours instead of spending weeks to months on a boat must have seemed crazy.
@nikobelic4251
@nikobelic4251 3 роки тому
Rudolph Peppers not really, the first commercial airplane ticket was sold in 1914, 11 years after the first plane took off. The first passenger taken on a plane was only a year or so after the first plane ever flew. Obviously, there were a few skeptics there always, are but air travel proved far more promising than space travel even in the early days.. I am one who believes space tourism will be around by 2050 at the latest. Probably be there way sooner. But you can’t compare space tourism to air travel. They appear similar on the surface but are actually very different.
@WasatchWind

@@nikobelic4251 I feel that the 2020s is when space tourism will start to happen regularly - not for everyone, but people will be going up on a consistent basis. You'll see videos in the UKposts trending tab going "We went to SPAAACE!" By the 2030s, much more people will be going up. Finally, I think the 2040s will be when space tourism comes within reach of the upper middle class, and for others if they go to work in space.

05:41 In this video I can only conclude one thing, and that is that everyone makes the same mistake in using just one substance for any component construction. This makes an intrinsic error generation which is directly related to any such single component use. Microcracks, microfractures, imperfections building up in any single component happen in every case. Only when more than one substance is used in conjunction, can there be safety. If one substance fails, the other will keep going, and subsequently scanning techniques need to be applied that detect such in a full vehicle scale. Then a failing part can be replaced, even though that part has already failed, while remaining functional. (Other words, one substance has failings in it, the other kept providing function, the whole component needs replacing, replacing both substances. Since more than one substance is used, they can't fail at the same time, since both fail at different times and under different circumstances.) That is one of the main anti-error mechanisms that should be incorporated into spaceflights Just trying to get more and more on a single flight by weight reduction is all fun, but for serious business the number of mishaps needs to be neigh-on zero, or rather nearing zero or better yet zero absolute. There can be errors, but no true accidents as a result, leading to loss of life. (When something receives stress, it creates error in the substance it's made of, and then subsequently starts failing. When a single substance is used, the stress tolerance lowers over time with use. Using dual or triple substance application for each single component, these sustances would all fail in a different time frame, and thus they would not fail simultaneously. The fractured subsatnce can then be checked for, and indicate full component replacement neccesity. Although this comes at a tiny weight increase, which isn't neccesarily the worst, if allowed to fail, any critical compent failure would end in disaster, and that's bad for tourism. Any money gained by over weightreduction would now be lost again, and any company's name tarnished, resulting in stock dives as well as damage claims, insurance rising and whatnot. Lives lost that could have been saved is always bad.)
@ZMacZ
@ZMacZ 3 роки тому
The problem is not with maximum tolerance, which is a shortcut of sorts, but the solution in that case is a high weight increase. Think of it as a hollow steels tube, formed into a ring, with a heat resistant laminate within. Despite any failure of the outside metal, the inside laminate could keep it functional for just one more time, while undergoing severe degradation itself on the laminate. The objective is to keep functionality for the duration of exactly that flight, and thus allow for succes where otherwise there would be critical failure resulting in crash.
@ZMacZ
@ZMacZ 3 роки тому
And note that the usage of a laminate in this case doesn't mean less tensile or so, and wouldn't even need that much more weight at all, due to the expansion of the steel to create a same durable component, and would rely on the laminate to prevent critical failure..
@ZMacZ
@ZMacZ 3 роки тому
For carbon fibre structure, add some metal mesh/'chicken wire' and for metal components add laminate.

Massive potential. Do any of these guys ever look at the technology? Is the technology robust enough to achieve a high flight rate? Oh, the astronaut training program is an MOU with NASA, not a contract. If NASA likes whatever plan they develop, it would lead to an agreement. It's not really clear Blue Origin cares that much about tourism. New Shepard has achieved most of its goals as a technology demonstrator for orbital rockets and spacecraft. You got that right.

They're making it sound like space tourism is super risky for SpaceX and Blue Origin. Blue Origin is putting a lot of money into tourism, but both companies have significant stakes in more proven launch markets. New Glenn will probably be very successful for Blue Origin. To think of tourism as being "risky" for SpaceX at this point feels a bit foolish. They are the only private company to get people into space on their own rocket thus far, and they are doing very well in all their other business ventures. From a business standpoint, whether tourists want to fly with SpaceX is just a different kind of customer. SpaceX has the hardware available, and someone's willing to pay. What's risky about that? I feel that SpaceX is trustworthy in their ability to keep tourists safe as well. The only risk I am anticipating in commercial space is too many people coming up before the outdated ISS is ready to handle them. Looking at all that exposed equipment... the ISS is not ready to handle a bunch of tourists. I hope Axiom can get things up and running quickly.

Im sure the people willing to cough up that dough would want the 100% authentic experience of what it would be like for an astronaut, because Im sure they are going to be huge nerds, and would want nothing different. They wouldnt be there for a whole rotation Im sure.

We've got about 5 billion years before that happens (and at least 800 million years before it heats up to the point that that the Earth becomes uninhabitable at its current orbital distance). By that point, if our ancestors are still around, they should have the technology to move the Earth to a safer orbit or out of the solar system entirely.
@RobinClaassen
@RobinClaassen 3 роки тому
@Thijs Kievit Sure, or in many orbital habitats, perhaps many habitats orbiting many stars. As far as the Earth goes, my guess is that we will either also continue to inhabit it (perhaps it would become a pilgrimage site for all humans, like Mecca currently is for Muslims), or perhaps we'll break it and the other planetary bodies of the solar system down to build more orbital habitats, so that the same amount of mass can support a much larger number of human lives (hundreds of trillions, instead of just billions).

Space tourism will be huge! A person will be able to go from an Earth spaceport to an in-space spaceport/hotel, baggage check to baggage claim, in less than two hrs. is my guess. Have dinner, attend a meeting, seminar, or facility tour, then return to land and home by the end of the day, or stay-over in the space hotel. When accommodations are available in space for tourists, my guess is there'll be as many if not more serious minded people visiting and using the accommodations for research and business reasons. Starships will hopefully be operating service from various nations/continents to space hotel/station hubs where passengers connect with Starships for their appropriate Earthbound leg of their journey. So I see the space station tourist hotels operating as hubs to other Starship operating routes. Perhaps SpaceX Starships can be manufactured, then sold to independent Starship line operators, just as Boeing and others sell their aircraft to independent operators. Plus, around this time that these space tourism hotels/hubs begin service, there'll probably be some in-space manufacturing start-ups beginning to appear in space, as well, hopefully not too far from the tourism activity etc.

Although i agree that its a new space race. I think saying SpaceX and blue origin is betting on space tourism is not entirely accurate. They are working more towards heavy duty rockets for longer travels to open accessibility to space for resources and exploration, not really tourism, although that is a factor. That's a partial flaw in this video, the beginning of it started as explaining the cost benefit of tourism as a source of revenue. While there was another point that was brought up that people think you should concentrate on problems on earth, and actually alot of issues on earth is also the result of restricted or limited resources or solutions on earth, which solutions and resources can possibly be found via space exploration. The one "bet" that this video should have brought up is Space X's plans on Starship which would bring in more revenue than all these "space tourism" plans, where larger masses of people can be transported within hours to anywhere on earth, not just transporting cargo. Its more scaleable.
