Intro
Streaming Isn’t Profitable
To prove this, let’s take a look at the major platform Disney has lost some $1.5 billion despite being one of the fastest growing platforms.
Warner Bros recently merged with the Discovery Channel and has posted net loss of $2.3 billion and Amazon Prime Video does not disclose its numbers.
Which is a little bit suspicious because if they were doing super well you'd think they'd be bragging about how much money they were making off of it Prime Video. After all, if streaming media is the future, then Amazon would want to be seen by investors as at the cutting of technology, and doing it successfully.
But given the hush hush nature of Prime Video’s profits, it’s easy to assume it’s turning a loss, especially when they’re going to spend an estimated 20 billion dollars in 2023 on content - and that’s more than Netflix makes in several years.
Speaking if Netflix, not only are they the most profitable streaming platform, but in their third quarter letter to shareholders they state
“Our competitors are investing heavily to drive subscribers and engagement, but building a large,
successful streaming business is hard - we estimate they are all losing money, with combined
2022 operating losses well over $10 billion, vs. Netflix's $5 to $6 billion annual operating profit.”
Now, take this statement with a grain of salt since Netflix has a lot of motivation to make it’s competitors look bad, but even Netflix with it’s success is still losing subscribers, and that’s because there’s simply too much competition.
Too Much Competition
When Netflix first started it had an advantage in timing and in usage rights because there were no other streaming platforms at its scale they were able to buy up the rights to all sorts of movies from a ton of different studios making them the central place that you would want to find movies if you were interested in streaming them directly to your TV.
But then other gigantic corporations started seeing the amount of money Netflix was making. It was in the billions and suddenly all of them wanted a piece of that delicious streaming profitable pie that we call market share.
and as individual companies began pulling back the rights that they had originally given Netflix and putting them on their own streaming platforms the market began to get very saturated as competition skyrocketed and consumers were forced to choose which streaming platforms they wanted to join and which movies and TV shows they wanted to be able to watch.
There are enough consumers in the North American market to support several streaming platforms, but not enough to support as many platforms as there are at the prices these platforms were charging, and because of that market saturation, companies began raising prices in order to have any hope of being profitable - because stream is very expensive.
Stream Is Expensive
Streaming companies have to pay for things like server space, employees, media rights for different films that they plan to distribute, and marketing, but that's not even mentioning the cost of the original productions that they seem to have to put out constantly in order to maintain their subscriber base.
Having those amounts of costs for something often as cheap as just $10 a month it's just not a sustainable model, especially since there are no ads running on it like there are on UKposts or Facebook; it's purely subscription based.
And if everybody wants cheap streaming, but it's just not a sustainable model then stream has to become a loss leader for huge companies to get consumers in the door. They need to be willing to take the hit on the streaming platforms and leverage that as advertisements for the other aspects of their businesses that are profit.
Imagine Disney losing losing money on Streaming, but gaining more fans so people see movie premieres in theatres and make more trips to Disney world.
Or Amazon using prime video as a way to get people to shop on Amazon.com and get free shipping.
Companies may just have to use the ability to stream their shows as a way to get people in the door and then find other ways to profit Because they're not going to find those profits with video streaming.
So here's your complete answer: streaming platforms are merging by being bought or they're being made the subsidiary of a huge already profitable platform like Amazon because there's not enough money in streaming for them to be able to exist on their own.
and bless your Netflix you go little guy we believe in you.

I agree, as it used to be. Then they fled and started their own. Now this all has to be taken with a grain of salt. Streaming is profitable, it's just not as profitable as theatre visits or physical media sales as all content needs to be financed with a monthly subscription. There's no fee per piece of content. To comment on Amazon not disclosing their figures: Prime video is a part of Prime wich houses a number of services. If one loses money it can be compensated by the other. Amazon's business model is totally different then all the other services. Prime Video isn't a seperate services, it's part of. Also, netflix isn't losing money because of competition but because of their lack of good content (with the exception of Stranger Things and Wednesday). Not a lot of hit shows came from Netflix this year. Back to the splintering of all studios launching their own platforms. yes, that wasn't a wise decision. As stated in the video, You would have to subscribe to all these platforms if you wished to see all your favourite content wich would increase your monthly bill way above your cable bill. Wasn't on demand streaming being promoted as the ultimate cable cutter? It's not lucrative anymore for the consumer. In short, everything was better when it was on Netflix, but Disney for example got greedy.

Streaming made piracy decline because you had access to almost any show/movie you wanted, on a single site (at least back when Netflix was pretty much the only one), and it was cheap. 10 bucks and you get to see anything you want. Now every company with more than 1 movie under their belt wants to make their own streaming service and charge 10 bucks a month. Costs go up for the consumer, costs start to pile up with every new streaming platform you subscribe to. Gone is the ease of watch we had at first, now you have to navigate between different platforms just to find what you want to find, not to mention it's more expensive than cable used to be (which was also a selling point at first).
@backtoklondike

I remember many years ago that Game of Thrones was for the longest time one of the most pirated shows. And the reason why was because it's wasn't available easily on streaming. You needed to pay for HBO on cable and then add streaming on the service which costed extra. Meanwhile Breaking Bad was less pirated because it was on Netflix. Now BB didn't pull as big of numbers as GOT, even during the final season. But it was still huge and part of that was because of Netflix. But I also find it funny that the music industry is even more greedier and tougher on piracy then the movie side. But they solved it much easier by having their music be available on any platform. If you want to stream your favourite artists newest album, you don't have choose between say, Apple music or Spotify. There are still some exclusivity deal and the music industry still has huge problems, but for the most part, easy availability isn't one of them.

Take sherlock for example. used to be on netflix a few years back in my country, the entirety. Until BBC decided... idk what they decided but its no longer available at all, only season 4 is included in prime video for some reason. although to be completely fair here, it could be worse, sports is completely fucked, if you wanna watch all games of your favourite Bundesliga team in germany you needed 4 different subscriptions at one point, each costing 20 bucks except dazn which is 40. Its completely mental. i also dont necessarily think that a true monopoly would be much worse than what we currently have because even if they charge like 50 bucks or something excessive, A) they can only go so far before people start pirating again B) even that is still cheaper than having netflix, prime, hbo, dazn, hulu, disney+ and whatnot and C) you then have everything in one service making it infinitely more convenient.

It was always eventually going to end up that way, its also why I have no faith in video game streaming services, they won't be able to sustain a subscription cost unless they are just old first party titles. Like what nintendo and playstation are doing. And in that regard it doesn't make them worthwhile to subscribe too. Streaming video doesn't use a much resources but has the issue of wasting their budget on things the audience doesn't want and fear of trying to branch out creatively.

Netflix streaming has always been lacking in a bunch of content. One of the big issues was the 20-30 minutes it could take to find something to watch if it wasn't in one of the lists that the viewer was presented with. Even at the prices that they're charging, it's not a good deal, you can buy a NAS and DVDs to stream for yourself and mostly not have to worry about most of these issues.
@TSMSnation
@TSMSnation Рік тому
And THATS the answer to your question.
@exoticbutters2781
@exoticbutters2781 Рік тому
This is only a part of the problem. One of the big issues with streaming services today is their huge spending on garbage content. I'll admit, Netflix took a huge hit when Disney and the other film titans decided to launch their own platforms which meant that they could no longer license their content libraries (even losing the rights to shows like Daredevil for example), but back then Netflix had a lot of great original content. They were ones that made Platform Originals the standard. I feel that they would've continue to had success if they had continued to focus on quality content over quantity. These days, they're throwing money at garbage like that one movie about a pregnant dude, and a bunch of shows that look like indie film projects. I'm not going to hate on those creators, but let's be honest here, with all of the competition out there, why would I keep a Netflix subscription if they're only releasing mediocre content and then canceling the ones that I may happen to find interesting. And that's another issue, they'd release a show, and then cancel it because it didn't get a huge pop like their Marque shows like stranger things. Thankfully, all of the other platforms are employing a similar strategy. Disney's marvel phase 4 has gone so poorly and none of their D+ shows were good imo. So dumping millions and millions into low quality content along with price hikes helped to drive the loss in subscribers. Another thing I never understood was why Netflix sat there while their competition gobbled up the publishing houses. Here's an example, Netflix licensed the addams family owned by MGM to make Wednesday, but they let Amazon buy MGM and now there are talks of them potentially losing the rights to it or even having to pay Amazon more. Why couldn't they make a move to buy MGM instead? Warner is another one. It was known that AT&T was trying to sell Warner (HBO, Cartoon Network, DC Comics, etc) and was taking bids. How the hell did they lose out on that deal. Disney owns Marvel, Netflix could've owned DC. So yeah, there are reasons why streaming services aren't profitable but competition isn't the biggest reason. Sorry for the long-winded response.
@maYTeus

The low quality is because the streaming suits are probably using their network TV formula to produce cheap shows to soak up time slots but forgot that it is good for commercial breaks not subscribers.
@exoticbutters2781
@exoticbutters2781 Рік тому
@MATEUS that's not it. The landscape has shifted, so instead of investing in producing most of the shows in their studios, they are opting paying to pickup series from smaller shops. If done correctly, this is beneficial because they can purchase film rights from studios around the world and focus on the localization. The issue is that they've been throwing monet at every and anything and caused their streaming catalogs to be filled with low tier shows. You find a diamond in the rough here and there but they just end up canceling them, so it's a lose lose for the customer.

Streaming is profitable the problem is that it is only profitable through advertisement. The broadcast era in television proved this. You can make a profit if you sell ad space between your programs or at different moments throughout the show to different companies. Pluto TV is making a profit because of this model. This is where the market is heading, ad supported content across all of these platforms for free, or subscribe to drop ads, then wrap up content into continuous delivery mechanisms to keep people within the ecosystem (hence why the targeting of content for different demographics and the volume of content is being expanded); The premise in the video of using streaming to get people in the door is a short sighted one as that won't be an easy model to prove value in and will have a ceiling where the value vs investment significantly drops off - I do agree with the premise that the business models will still try and drive revenue from other sources but it can't be sustainable as the primarily driver.

I don't like monopolies, but I hope this craziness of having a hundred streaming services collapses. We need competition, but fragmenting the market so much has ruined things for your average user. Luckily, it's not profitable either, so consolidation seems to be the way things are headed. I would be happy with maybe 3 to 5 services in competition, but the current state of things is ridiculous. When you make things difficult for your audience, it just leads to piracy.

Regarding Amazon Prime: I don't think your assumption makes sense. The only logical reason for Amazon to have a video streaming platform is to get more people to subscribe to their *free shipping* deal, which in turn only exists to incentivise careless spending. The total possible net revenue of both streaming and terrestrial television is peanuts compared to what Amazon wants to earn from online shopping. All this to say: there's no reason for Amazon to publish streaming revenue, because even internally they probably don't even consider that a relevant metric. The moment you stop being conviniences to the users is the moment you screw up your whole momentum and that's whay is causing the downfall of it. People don't want to pay 6 services to enjoy probably one of 2 things of that exclusive streaming platform. Piracy offer you everything at one places, while also being free?. All you can do is easier to access that content which is the weak side of piracy.

@liljenborg2517
@liljenborg2517 Рік тому
Cable was so expensive because that's how much it cost to produce all the content on cable, and many of the cable channels were operating at a loss and propped up by ESPN or the news networks that people did watch - or they switched from making content like Battlestar Galactica to making Sharknado sequels. (There's a reason Star Trek disappeared from TV until Paramount+ needed some big draw for its new streaming service - if only they had actually made GOOD Star Trek . . . ) Streaming - especially the Netflix commercial-free style - hamstrings itself by not having ads. Netflix can make a popular show like Stranger Things (that's pretty pricey to make), but they can't monetize the audience. The show only makes money for Netflix if it gains subscribers (and the market is already saturated). Otherwise a show that everybody just HAS to watch, doesn't make Netflix any more money than a show only a niche audience watches, or a show nobody wants to watch. Ads would let Netflix monetize a show's actual popularity by being able to charge more to advertisers to put ads up on more popular shows. A proper system would also let them put up ads (like baking or food company ads on cooking shows) that might actually hit the target audience. But ads are fickle. One of the problems with Advertising (going all the way back to the "dot com crash" of 1999) is that the internet lets you very accurately track ads and just how INEFFECTIVE advertising can be. Ad rates have been falling ever since - and even UKposts has struggled to make money via ads - and that's with Google's AdSense backing it up. And, nowadays, with so many options out there, advertisers have to decide to sink their ad dollars into UKposts, or TicTock, or Hulu, or Cable TV, or broadcast TV - more and more streaming services jumping on the Ad bandwagon will only lead to more competition for ad dollars - which will lead to lower ad rates which will lead to lower profitability for streamers that do ads.

doesnt explain Fox (who is notorious for having a hate boner for sci fi) starting up The Orville, well before CBS/Paramount announced Star trek discovery, and produced 2 seasons, before it moved to Hulu for streaming (and later co-opted to Disney+ too)
@liljenborg2517
@liljenborg2517 Рік тому
@@dustinherk8124 What do you mean by a "hate boner"? Fox was always MAKING Sci-Fi shows, from Space: Above and Beyond (one of the BEST shows ever) to Firefly to Almost Human to Terra Nova - the problem was that Fox always seemed to have this idea that these sci-fi shows would somehow pull in impossibly huge ratings and ad-rates. Then when they couldn't get 113% of all TVs in the country watching the show and charge as much for ads as the Superbowl, they would cancel it before the first season ended. (Imagine how different the sci-fi landscape would have been if Fox had stuck with Firefly or Almost Human long enough to get it to that 100 episode syndication benchmark?) I was actually surprised when they stuck it out for a second season with Orville. It must have hit some metric (ratings, or social media interaction or something) that Fox liked enough - of course part of what went on there was Disney buying Fox and wanting something to counter STD to nip CBS All Access in the bud before they became a streaming competitor. (And it worked, sort of, CBS All Access folded - and then turned into Paramount+.)
@dustinherk8124
@dustinherk8124 Рік тому
@@liljenborg2517 i mean what i said. Firefly would of doen a metric fuck ton better if they aired the episodes in sequence, or even in the same time slot consistently. thats a hate boner move. same thing happened with The Sarah Connor chronicles. and that show even had a successful second season with MORE episodes, all metrics showed for renewal because it wasnt hemoraging money, like much of their other sci fi shows, it still got the ax prematurely, because sci fi hate boner. some of their stuff, just wasnt profitable, and i'll consede your point about almost human and terra nova, but they actively hurt their own IP's through terrible leadership of the network. and firefly is the blazing example of this. when the first episode was not the pilot episode of Firefly. the first aired episode was The Train Job. which was episode 2. the pilot episode didnt even air until fox broadcast their 4th episode.

If there is no streaming service, in the age of Internet, we still find way to stream to content. For the company to make money, they better figure it out. Consumer always get the content, it is just whether the big company want to benefit from that. One thing I am sure is that rising price and streaming fragmentation do not help them to earn a profit.

The hypocrisy of crooked capitalism. These streaming services could all be thriving if they simply followed capitalism and free market instead of trying to cheat and monopolize. It's like cellphone companies can compete on prices vs quality/value of the cell-service, but they don't try to say "from now on, if you want to access youtube, you MUST use Verizon, and Not T-Mobile or AT&T. If you want to use tiktok, you must use AT&T." if the streaming service just offer the streaming part, the studio still do the licensing but maybe take a bigger pieces of the pie. It would all still work. People just choose whichever streaming service they like but the content is the same. Streaming services don't have to spend so much money for "exclusive content." Studios can also maximize the viewership of each of their movie/show since everyone will see it and pay for it through their chosen streaming service.
