It’s been five years since Tesla acquired SolarCity for about $2.6 billion. The deal was immediately controversial with some shareholders suing Elon Musk. But fans looked forward to charging their Tesla electric vehicles on sunshine. CNBC interviewed industry experts and recent Tesla solar customers to see how the company is delivering on its promises today.
Correction (October 6, 2021): At 3:30 we incorrectly state that Elon Musk was a majority shareholder of SolarCity and Tesla. The correct statement is that he is a large shareholder, not a majority shareholder.
It’s been five years since Tesla acquired SolarCity for around $2.6 billion.
To convince shareholders to approve the deal, Elon Musk hosted a splashy event in Hollywood, where he held up a shiny roof shingle, which he said was a miniaturized solar panel.
SolarCity was founded in 2006 by Musk’s cousins, Peter and Lyndon Rive. It was backed by Musk who served as chairman of the board at both Tesla and SolarCity. Musk’s aerospace company, SpaceX, had also purchased tens of millions of dollars worth of solar bonds from SolarCity.
“The goal is to make solar roofs that look better than a normal roof, generate electricity, last longer, have better insulation, and actually have an installed cost that is less than a normal roof plus the cost of electricity. Why would you buy anything else?” Musk said at the event in October 2016.
The roof tiles were going to be the next big thing in residential solar, according to Musk, and once Tesla and SolarCity combined, the product would juice the company’s growth while delivering clean energy to homeowners.
After the deal went through, however, new installations by Tesla-SolarCity plummeted.
In the fourth quarter of 2017, Tesla reported a 43% drop in solar deployments compared with when it purchased SolarCity. The company ended up losing its market-leading position in 2018 and now hovers around 2% of the residential solar market, according to Wood Mackenzie. In the first and second quarters of 2021, Tesla installed 92 and 85 megawatts of solar, respectively. That’s less than half of what SolarCity was installing per quarter before the acquisition.
Tesla moved some solar employees to work on building the company’s electric cars and batteries, fired other solar employees, and moved others who had been doing new installations to work on repairs and remediation.
Some of the solar rooftops the company installed caught fire. One employee who raised fire safety concerns internally and filed whistleblower complaints to federal government offices sued Tesla saying it wrongfully terminated him as an act of retaliation.
Shareholders also sued, saying the acquisition amounted to a bailout for Musk and his family’s other businesses.
While the judge won’t deliver his verdict in the derivative shareholder lawsuit until early next year, Musk testified the SolarCity deal was essential to achieve Tesla’s vision. He denied SolarCity had been in dire financial straits before Tesla acquired the business.
Today, there’s growing demand and fresh government support for residential and commercial solar throughout the United States.
But Tesla still isn’t mass producing and installing large numbers of the Solar Roof tiles. Most of the growth in its Energy division has come from its energy storage systems -- from backup batteries for homes to big batteries for utility-scale projects. Most of its residential solar revenue comes from installations of traditional panels.
CNBC interviewed industry experts and recent Tesla solar customers, to find out how the company is delivering on its solar promises. Their experiences were mixed, with customers in Washington, New York and California bemoaning poor customer service and unexpected issues with the installation of their solar panels, and others praising Tesla for making cars and systems that enable them to run on sunshine.
Tesla did not respond to multiple requests for comment on this story.

This panel can put out close to 100 watts ukposts.infoUgkxOqI2yqX0XVrhR2BMJciTWrHJpG8FhJyg when positioned in the appropriate southernly direction, tilted to the optimal angle for your latitude/date, and connected to a higher capacity device than a 500. The built in kickstand angle is a fixed at 50 degrees. Up to 20% more power can be output by selecting the actual date and latitude optimal angle. The 500 will only input 3.5A maximum at 18 volts for 63 watts. Some of the excess power from the panel can be fed into a USB battery bank, charged directly from the panel while also charging a 500. This will allow you to harvest as much as 63 + 15 = 78 watts. If this panel is used to charge a larger device, such as the power station, then its full output potential can be realized.

Seems like the only thing Tesla was good at was PR! They even got a Reddit post about them shut down recently because it was unflattering. This is just getting to outright grift territory, I can't believe they were allowed to rip people off like that! I get so mad seeing musk rip off normal middle and working class people, and he shrugs it off like "welp, that's capitalism" and then makes a joke on Twitter about starting a coup. (Which he's actually done before). The things he's allowed to get away with are so infuriating to me I hope things are at least up and working for you now! I dream about being able to get off the grid this way. It's super cool to see people like you who wanted to take the initiative and expense of solar panels cause they believed in the idea, just to see them get taken advantage of so Musk can focus on what he actually cares about, which is Tesla's stock.

Residential roof top solar makes zero sense and when politicians and the like push for it than I know they have no clue what they are talking about and are just parroting some BS they got told. If you want to do this for your house than I would say do it if cost is not an issue of if you are off grid. Commercial three phase customers are typically on a completely different electrical tariff and there, solar makes sense. The trick is not even to completely replace their supply but to install enough panels so that their demand from the grid is less. If the people want solar for their homes than it's probably makes more sense to push for it to happen as a grid based installation.

It's really pretty easy (and goes along with what many have stated in comments)- put some money and people into this part of the business. The business model could be sound, but the Tesla businesses always seem to be strapped for money to both grow internally and also to support the business they've sold. The intent was for solar production to be a core business and have both production and storage be separate, but related elements. They in turn would be synergistic with the automobile business to provide for easy means of vehicle charging. I tried to get a Tesla powerwall a couple years ago to go with my non-Tesla solar panel install. Talk about a joke. Installers couldn't get them, then they stopped selling them separately (e.g. without buying Tesla solar panels), then that process even SLOWWWEED DOWN as I understand it due to lack of supply. Tesla is great at conceptualizing products and getting them to initial production, but not great at ongoing production execution and support of what's sold. The former seems to be improving on the automobile production side as new Gigafactories come online, however, their other businesses fail in that regard. Tesla needs to reorganize into lines of business such as Transportation (Automobiles and Trucking), Power Generation (Retail and Commercial), and Power storage (Retail and Commercial), Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, and Physical Infrastructure (the Boring Company), with separate heads for each unit reporting to Elon. I agree he should keep management tree flat, but he cannot DO IT ALL and right now that is pretty evident that he has spread himself very thin. At least with SpaceX he has Gwen Shotwell, but it's unclear to me what amount of managerial activity she actually performs for SpaceX day to day and if she has any say in what's going on with Starlink. SpaceX is ripe for reorg as well to have various business divisions. Each division needs to have its own head and its own level of capital expenditure that is identified and known. They need to grow their businesses separately, but also as a whole. The challenge will be to maintain synergies between business units. They clearly can't do that now so any organizational change would not necessarily make things worse. If they could get all parts of the organization producing goods and services in synchronicity and provide exemplary customer service to go along with the products, Tesla (and separately SpaceX) could be another order of magnitude better as a company.

There is almost no other industrial process where harvesting of dilute, intermittent resources is done. Practical energy is produced in concentrated factories that can operate 24/7/365 regardless of weather or season, and then distributed to consumers. The consumer producing his own power makes about as much sense as if everyone would produce their own cars or their own food.

Tesla was the most affordable option and I liked that they now own their manufacturing facilities and don't farm out the labor, so far it has felt pretty streamlined. I had some back and forth with their solar design team to get our offset to as close to 100% as possible (max allowable by NV Energy in our area). I did want to mention that I opted out of battery backups. In Las Vegas, we rarely have blackouts, so the most reasonable backup solution to me would be a natural gas backup generator (which I haven't even decided to do yet). My best guess is that in order to have effective CS(customer support), they'll have to get more people to do it. In order to be effective at CS, you must be absolutely familiar with the situation. With any complex situation, to be absolutely familiar with the situation, you must be deeply involved in the company or design of the company's product. If tesla has been anything so far, they have been non-transparent(they don't want to reveal too much info). The last thing they are interested in doing at this time is hiring a bunch of people to answer phones all day....yet these people would be immensely invested into Tesla--they would know every single detail, from engineering designs to customer profiles; job estimates and technology deficiencies. Tesla doesn't need any more loose ends, therefore more CS is highly doubtful. Simply hiring more goons to answer calls won't please anybody, because goons are low-level and don't have access to the sensitive info that would actually provide people with helpful answers and timelines.

Good report. I work in the industry and have found that So many delays are caused by a cacophony of municipalities and utilities requiring so many different types of installs, or permit and inspection requirements. Until the utilities and municipalities of all the states get together and homogenize the system there will always be long delays for the installation process of solar. It would be nice if you could do an in-depth report on that. Also, It is almost impossible to find and keep electricians and laborers in this field. That is a huge logistics for companies to hurdle.

I live in Australia and have a 5kW solar system installed with a 10kWh Sonnen battery. Cost was just under AU$20k (about US$14.4k). Installed in one day, a month after ordering, and now I pay $49 a month for electricity (I'm in a VPP plan with Sonnen Flat) instead of $250 a month which is what I paid in 2018, the last year before I had solar. So it will take about 8.5 years to pay itself off and each year, so far, we've been very close to carbon neutral.

not sure if 'carbon neutral' is the right term. i'm guessing that you're not figuring in manufacturing, installation, eventual replacement, etc. people tend to buy electric cars and think, "i'm totally green now!" even though all that electricity going into the car comes from a coal plant. out of sight, out of mind...

@@mmm-mmm I have an EV as well and I run that with solar energy off my roof and the other solar roofs in the suburb (40% of Australian homes have solar) and after 8 months it had offset carbon emissions from manufacturing (see link below). I’m on my second EV now after 4 years. I used to pay $100 a week for fuel in 2018, now it’s free. In fact I charge my EV using an app that tracks available solar energy. So my car is run from the sun only (we’re not as backward as the US on rooftop solar). Also I’m now with an electricity supplier that provides access to the wholesale electricity market and I’ve configured my house battery to take advantage of spikes in supply charge so that my house battery discharges when the demand is extreme and now I get paid to connect to the grid. I can even take advantages of this time when you get paid to use electricity because there is too much supply which happens a lot in summer in Australia due to every third house have PV cells on the roof. So in summer I get paid to charge my car with solar energy simply because the grid frequency needs balancing. Don’t believe all the crap that the oil company’s pump out. In Michigan, because Tesla doesn't operate here I had to go through Green Panel Inc. a Tesla partner. The experience was great and they ran all the conduit though the attic so the system is attractive and totally seemless on the main roof and garage. The Tesla Gateway and Powerwalls are outstanding products and very happy with them. They used enphase micro inverters on each panel so I feel my system is better than the Tesla string inverter solution. 12kw system, it's saving me around $2,000 a year under Indiana/Michigan power. I think it's smart to go with Tesla Gateway and Powerwall so you can gain the benefits of the shared ecosystem with the cars; like the charge on solar feature that is coming and possible VPP in the future.

The other question is how much does it cost to maintain it. I know that at some point tiles need to be replaced after. Coming from a contractor’s point of view and experience. In the first place they’re trying to sell an over priced product that has a lot of extra padded profit had it in to the total price for everybody to make profit with too much overhead management. Second there is the human factor which is probably the first biggest point everybody who doesn’t get their hands dirty doesn’t understand. To make profit they need the absolute cheapest workers for the labor but they don’t want to pay for the skill of a quality labor for quality craftsmanship and installation. And as soon as a worker whether he’s one of the grunt workers doing the installs or a job site manager who also works with his hands gets good enough to become proficient and repeatable he discovers he’s not getting paid enough to make a living doing this and he goes to somebody else who will pay him who understands what needs to be done without corporate taking a large percent of the gross profits leaving the contractor with very little net margin profit. So then the subcontracted third-party contractors are continuously having to rehire new personnel and having to train them over making mistakes all over again everywhere from water leaks electrical mistakes installation errors in cutting drilling. And there’s a ridiculous amount of junction wiring connection points that all have to overlap and betapped together and series and parallel and everyone is a potential fault in the future multiplied 1000 times over your typical solar installation using panels. Then you have Tesla allowing contractors with owners and contractors who have no company and on hand experience but just a piece of paper saying they are a contractor with a license and they’re heavy into marketing and sales and pushing for upsell‘s for profit to skip out on quality of mechanical installation and cannot even comprehend or even train their lower wage working staff how to do the installations themselves. They rely on videos and pamphlets and little quick seminars to get years of information crammed into a short duration of time that’s impossible to deliver a quality product. On the other hand any legitimate quality contractor installer and even solar may think of trying to get onto this program but once they find out all the paperwork delays defective products every now and then angry customers give a contractor a bad reputation even though he’s a good contractor because he tried to be an installer of a third-party product like tesla solar roof. And when a honest highly ethical contractor who believes in 100% reputation of installation of a product gets burnt by the companies whose product he’s trying to install and gets angry customers they give him bad reviews because of a third-party product that he tries to install like the solar Tesla roof he will give up and quit and never go back because the marriage between Tesla and the customer and himself in the middle who gets stuck with all the blame gives his company a bad name. So he will drop out of the program leaving Tesla looking for someone even more desperate to get into their program and tesla lowering their standards of who they will allow install their product it’s a vicious circle to the bottom of the barrel. Even though what they say and their intentions are to be the best unfortunately with the human factor involved everything goes downhill in the other direction.

@@j_rod5893 Contractors or owners who get up into the marketing programs of high profits and how to make money and start following scripted margins and businesses practices high pressure sales will make a company a lot of money in the beginning until they burn too many bridges and get a bad reputation and then find out they have to change your phone number and change their name and start all over again. Does this sound familiar. And he usually comes from upper marketing or an owner who is never really a master at his craft in the first place if he even ever swing a hammer or wired up the house There’s no secret magic price range. To quality in quantity. Unless you listen to the high marketing impact sales and marketing who are going to help you grow your business with numbers that are usually cannot be obtained in the end a final collapse comes the majority of the time. I like my grandfather and my father who I worked under and instructed with very keen on education and reading technical manuals about the subject and the product and items that you were constructing selling diagnosing or engineering in combination with hands-on experience. And hands-on experience doesn’t mean 20 years of doing something wrong makes it right. Becoming so good and so efficient at what you do especially in construction when you have to know a little bit of engineering and materials application. Myself or my father or my grandfather as an owner were actually excellent instructors and very technical and knew how to get it across to even an employee that may have dropped out of school and was not the best at learning through Books. That mine said that even the janitor in your business had to know something about the business and that you can bring a janitor up to a level of a technician. Working so efficiently with supplies that you know every time a technician have to leave a job site or somebody have to call or supplies and get them delivered or go pick them up is money and time wasted that could’ve been on another job you might as well took all the money profits for that one day waiting for that one product and flush it down the toilet if you didn’t have it on stock in hand on your vehicle or back at the shop. Trading in selecting a staff that doesn’t steal from the company or rip them off it’s sometimes difficult. If the person doing the hiring for some reason attracts nothing but the bottom of the barrel. In a local market usually many workers that word will get out that somebody doesn’t train they under pay they overwork there’s no room to move up and not one single good employee will ever walk through the doors are called that employer and the employer always cry that he can’t find technicians but usually the problem lies in the mirror. You can actually charge Tesla’s kind of pricing or even hire to do a job but you do it so well above anything the customer ever expected. And those customers who self educate them selves meet there especially Tatian and you’re even interested in explaining and educating them to a far higher level that even they with all their research because they are about to dump 40,000 or 50,000 or $150,000 that you gave them more information about your business your trade how it’s done and where there’s unexpected expenditures that they didn’t even realize. When you finish your customer does so much advertising for you you do not need yellow page ads you do not need to socialize and look for connection you do not need flyers you do not need any form of advertising because so much advertising will be done for you by your customer and your customer we’re already praying your new customer that they’re referring that you are the most expensive guy there’s no argument about the price because of the quality of the product. My father and my grandfather did business like that even though I went to school and was young and learned a little bit about marketing and sales and I thought it had to be that way and father and grandfather just scarfed at me and laughed. Nearly 30 years ago when I started my own business I thought I had to have yellow page ads and do a lot of advertising maybe even those local neighborhood coupon ads. Because I work for franchises I work for corporate I worked for individual dealerships and seeing how the marketing worked and I thought that was the way it had to be. When I started my business that my father walked me through because he said he wouldn’t give me one I had to earn it and go through the hard trials. After about 2 to 2 1/2 weeks of doing walkins to promote my business is at other businesses I started getting so much work I can no longer go out and do advertising. Then my first brother came along and my second brother came along than an uncle and then a cousin. We had so much work we removed all advertisement and signage and phone numbers offer vehicles because we had too much work to the word of mouth of our customers. I pulled my yellow page ad after about the first year and got rid of them because it was totally worthless those were not the kind of customers I wanted I wanted to customers that I got two recommendations and pre-sales of my previous customers Nearly 30 years later I still have half of the box of 500 business cards that I printed out but I never passed out because I did not want any more business. Our flyers winning the garbage or Rolodex cards we were giving out in those days with her pager number and our fax number which we no longer have a fax anymore no pagers. And now I’m known to have some of the most expensive labor rate and prices for the product that I install or service with zero advertisement. Your advertisement is your work not the cheapest product not the cheapest supplies not the cheapest labor. But all applied by the owner who actually can thoroughly and efficiently with the highest degree of proficiency perform every task from installation to diagnosis to sales and everything is easy there is no difficult task. There is no more problems because they are also easily overcome and solved by each person performing the task in every level of the company. Because the owners are so proficient and efficient and good at what they do they could pass that attitude onto their workers and you literally teach your workers to become contractors or open up their own business and make them so good they could become your competitors. My father was like this teaching his apprentices under him to be so good they can open up their own business on some factor that was related in the industry. My first general contractor when I was young building houses mentored me and his other employees to all go out and get their own contractors license and as soon as we started on jobs he handed each one of us the book on engineering in on contracting building practices and quizzed us on every aspect of every job how to get better and what were the processes we were going to perform before we started that day. And off of that one contractor he mentored and started many other contractors that were very successful and in the end they all work together and help each other because they were taught by the best to be the best. Not the best salesman not the best marketing. The best master at their craft. Of course this kind of model cannot work for a large corporate chain a large corporate rule book business because there’s too many in competent individuals with money do you wanna pull their profit off the top with no common sense how to train anybody on the bottom

Maybe they are using the brand name to get some people who may not have been interested in solar to become interested. It sounds like a headache to deal with tesla solar. If someone had enough space to where they could have panels installed that weren't on the roof it is probably more scalable for the mass market.

I never understood the solar roof concept anyway. Every where in the world a lot of people install ordinary solar panels on there roof and it just works. To say that solar will only take of when it will look like ordinary shingles ... does not make sense to me.

So this is dated October 2, 2021. Today is June 19, 2022. Whereas with a Tesla 3 and Y, we are loving our cars and it was natural for us to go Solar. Here's the sad part: Customer service following installation! They don't answer phones, return texts or emails, and even when I finally got through to someone in Palo Alto to express my frustration and ask for "corporate" help, the guy literally read me his response. It was nearly word-for-word what is on my page on their website. So, my panels are on the roof--along with full water bottles and chunks of dried foam--but no final inspection has been scheduled, the electric company has not changed my meter, and nobody will respond to my multiple calls for assistance. The permit was issued in March, installation was done in May, and now they've gone radio silent. Elon Musk is my hero with one growing exception.

The solar panel "brackets" did not change the "life" of the roof as customer stated, I have over forty plus years of field experience, I probably know more about waterproofing than anybody in the country. While the mounting holes were larger than normal I suspect it's because they had to fix the post directly to a rafter below for wind uplift requirements. Adding a large flange wit elastomeric sealant does not harm the roof when done properly.
