Why the college football landscape could hinge on Notre Dame | Get Up

The Big Ten clearly has a number of teams to expand to and want ND to be one of them before adding schools of lesser stature. Finebaum is ignoring the fact that the SEC are afraid to expand out of the south and that will eventually lead to the end of the SEC dominance because of NIL money is going to be driven by the TV markets. HS players that join the Big Ten will be able to sign national endorsement deals and build nationwide brands even before they are drafted into the NFL. Only the Big Ten can offer that, that money is generational money, be set for life kind of money. The average NFL career lasts only four years and guaranteed contracts in the NFL are few and far between. The NIL is going to and is changing the landscape in college football the best players are going to go where they can maximize their NIL money and the Big Ten recognized this and why they are no longer a regional conference but a nationwide league.

The B1G isn't adding those southern schools. Membership AAU (Association of American Universities) is a requirement. The money in research grants DWARFS football. This is BILLIONS and BILLIONS of dollars. Oregon, Washington, Utah, Stanford, California, and UNC are all members. IMO these are the main targets. Oregon and Washington have ALREADY applied for membership. So that leaves 2 slots and I just don't think the B1G is interested in ND as they frankly, don't bring much to the table that the conference doesn't already have. They aren't AAU members. ND isn't expanding your TV share of the Chicago market in any meaningful way. Outside of geography and football competitiveness, they really don't bring anything of great value to the table. They had a chance and said no back a few years. If ND is interested, the B1G will likely listen but the B1G has ALL the leverage here and won't even look ND's way, ND is going to have to come to them, hat in hand. They are too arrogant to do that.

I'd expect the B1G to then target one more PAC 12 team (Stanford?) to get to 24. Notre Dame hasn't won a championship since '88 because they are one of the few D1 programs that have in place stringent academic restrictions and standards. Lets face it, many, many D1 college athletes that attend P5 public universities are not smarter than a 5th grader, but are extremely talented and can play football at the highest of levels. Notre Dame hurts itself by gearing their recruiting to players who excel in academics and athletics. Former coach Brian Kelly has gone on record saying, ""If they want to come here just to hang their hat to play football and go to the NFL, we passed on some pretty good players, because I don't want guys to come here and not finish their degree." That's why you rarely see programs like Stanford, Duke, Wake Forest, Notre Dame, Boston College, and Vanderbilt who are affiliated with a Power 5 conference rarely make noise in football. The schools that are 'football factories' that have less demanding academics and admission standards are the ones that make noise. Notre Dame can from time to time because of their brand, but they will no longer consistently do so unless they change their academic expectations on their football players.
