Why The F-Duct Was Banned From F1

F1 teams are awfully innovative when it comes to giving their cars the upper hand, which normally leads to two ideas from their rivals - "Can we copy it?" and "Can we get it banned?"
Enter McLaren's infamous 2010 F-Duct, where teams sought to recreate the concept for themselves before the FIA put their foot down on the pipework idea. Despite this, it did leave it's mark on the grid which we can still see on the cars to this day, and in this episode of Banned we take a look at the birth, lifespan and death of the notorious F-Duct and it's related cousins.

The reason other teams had to use their hands were due to the drivers survival cell being homologated at the start of the season. mainstream residential cars have been perfected over 10 years ago. People like bells and whistles and stuff that means they can become sh*ttier drivers. Does any racing vehicle have blind spot indicators, pedestrian collision technology or an ability to attempt to drive itself? Exactly. Here is the simplest explanation for the f duct .. grab a straw , put a hole in it halfway up, blow in one end and feel how much air is coming out the end. Now cover the hole in the middle and do the same and feel the result. You have just made your own f duct and a fluid switch. The hard part is balancing the sizes of intakes and outlets so your not stalling the wing without blocking the hole or on the other, blocking the whole and not stalling the wing.

You know when you stick your hand over the end of the hose on a vacuum cleaner and the motor spins faster? You can use that kinda thing to switch which pipe the air flows through. There is this really really neat aircraft museum in Dayton Ohio, USA, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. The way they have the museum setup, you start off at the very beginning of flight and work your way to the current area. You notice small changes in airframe design. For example moving flight control cables from the outside into a protected tube, or putting aerodynamic covers over wheels, or a plate over the spokes of a rim. It seems obvious looking back, but every advancement in design makes aviation that much safer and more efficient. The point is, unless new ideas and technologies are tested, advancement is impossible.

Alonso was shown in replays using his left hand to block the DRS duct. Since he had to use his right hand to adjust the break bias that left no hands on the steering wheel. The FIA realized that this was making the device too dangerous. If all the teams had used a duct activated by the left leg it would have been safer, but it wasn't practical to cram it into an existing car. The point was proven though, stalling the rear wing helped the cars pass. So rather than make the F-duct, all all the associated complex pipe work, legal it made more sense to introduce DRS instead because it was just a flap in the rear wing that did the same thing but with a greater effect and significant less development cost. Plus significantly safer. Ross Brawn later commented that the DRS flap was worth 10x times more in helping cars pass than all the aero changes they introduced in 2009 combined. He admitted that none of the brilliant aero guys involved in the 2009 changes thought of just putting a flap in the rear wing, if they had they would have saved everyone a lot of trouble.

Look at the crowd stands in Abu Dhabi, imagine an F1 at 200mph going over the fences into the crowd. Think of the law suits! F1 has to be safe for the audience as well as the drivers, so anything that makes the cars good faster and thus more dangerous has to be banned. Compromise. Make the cars go faster, put the crowd further back - 200m. All the crowd would see is coloured dots whizz past.

It honestly pisses me off how much shit in racing gets banned, it seems no matter what category they just ban fucking everything that would make it more exciting and or more competitive

I think it's silly to ban aero control schemes. They make the cars faster and races more exciting.

FIA: Play by the rules. Mercedes: How about no. There is a fine line between bending rules and "innovation".
@The_Curious_Cat
@The_Curious_Cat 3 роки тому
Innovation is being creative in the way you interpret the rules. Just because the a rule says "the cars can only be black" doesn´t mean the teams can´t paint it in matte black to improve weight and by doing so, they are not doing anything illegal, just applying the rules in a different way.

It understand that it is kind of important for FIA to intervene everytime when something new comes up but it would really be awesome if every team had their own solutions provided every team had enormous budget . I know it's not possible but it would be epic to have that.

Doesn’t DRS do the same thing as the F-Duct?
@darkalman
@darkalman 3 роки тому
Functionally yes, but the DRS is much better at it. Significantly cheaper, and arguably safer. The problem that led to the F-duct is F1 has a blanket rule than bans 'moveable aerodynamic devices' ie flaps in the wing. However at the time the driver was not considered as part of this rule, which is why a fluidic switch covered by the drivers leg/hand was legal. The F-duct is actually the reason they introduced DRS in the first place.

The first F-1 race I attended (I was eight years old) was in 1960 at Riverside Raceway in California (Stirling Moss won if anyone is interested). The cars had shifted to rear engine layout which at the time was the height of technical achievement. Oh how things have changed! Computers win races now, not the driver’s!

There is no traction control, abs, or active suspension there hasn't been for over a decade unless you mean the computers that control the fuel injection?
@raymondlowry8564

Jack Danny I suppose my comment is more of a melancholy lament. In the late sixties and seventies it seemed like there were a greater percentage of teams that could be competitive without needing the financial resources of a Boeing or Microsoft (a decent example was Rob Walkers efforts). One arena is engines. Although some companies always used their own power plants many others did quite well running the Cosworth DFV (this also helped level the playing field a bit). A company didn’t need access to wind tunnels and prohibitively expensive “main frame” computers to win races. Maybe I am being naive but I feel like there was a time when the driver made the difference (as in Stirling Moss-awesome driver largely competing in sub par British vehicles, but still winning races). Now it seems to me that you can take a good (not necessarily great) driver, put him in a dominant vehicle and the race is decided before it starts. The dominant vehicles now (and in fairness this isn’t a recent phenomena) are produced by companies with virtually unlimited developmental resources (super sophisticated computer designs), basically things that some companies don’t have and ultimately are forced to leave F1 because of this. So, my observation about “computers winning races” was more of a generic comment. I could be way off base here but to illustrate my point, I would suggest you could put several different drivers in the current Mercedes and they would win races in that car. However I doubt if the opposite is true. Could a Hamilton or Schumacher win a lot of races in mediocre vehicles today? I think not. And in my opinion “computers” play a huge part in this. Maybe all this is inevitable, but at least for me it seems like a big part of the drivers contribution has been reduced significantly. Just sayin’........

sad that there are so many bans; if it weren't for them, f1 would be much more advanced and cooler. teams would need to adapt or die out. Also it's insane that some small vents seem to be so significant for f1! You'd think only a computer driver could make something so fine tuned work

If all change was allowed, teames would spoil the air behind to make sure drivers could not overtake. Also would the race be drive versus driver or machine versus machine.
