Some of the racing lines were very strange at the Dutch GP, in particular at turn 3. It looked more like a wet line than anything else. But why were drivers taking this usual line?
I endeavour to answer this question in this video.

If you take T3 and copy it right across from itself, it would be and exact copy of the Bristol Motor Speedway, progressively banked tight turn. NASCAR uses a grip compound that wears off over time called "PJ-1" and they put it on the bottom to make it a more competitive line at the start of the race, but wears of over time reverting to the naturally quicker top line. Having a mastery of both lines is what makes Bristol such a tough track to succeed at, and also makes for a dynamic race which is entertaining since you can see the whole half mile track from any seat in the grandstands and see what is going on through the TV broadcast. It's a fan favorite for a reason.

Anyone who has followed NASCAR or other oval racing series can tell you that the high line on a banked corner can often be the fastest line. So those of us who are used to oval racing knew exactly what was going on. It was a bit weird seeing F1 cars not hitting what seems like should be the apex of the corner if it were near flat.
@musawirmohd6353
@musawirmohd6353 8 місяців тому
In qualifying fuel loads it would be more possible to take it flatout,but with race fuel loads,balance is different so that maybe part of reason,but yeah great edge from the oval drivers who no doubt would take the higher line on a curved banker,while watching others taking inside line.

I feel like next year’s cars are going to make this track a lot more interesting. Being able to follow closer out of turn 1 into turn 3. Side by side in turn 3, drag race through the flat out bit. It might not go that way but the new cars should theoretically love this track.

@@lifesgood4232 Jesus fucking christ stop with the BS of "the car is built and made around X drivers style". There's no such thing in F1, this is not motogp, the engineers try to build a solid foundation of a car and then they will work the setup on each drivers needs and style, but its not like the chassis is exclusively made around 1 driver lol. Look how Alonso said that the Alpine felt awful at the start of the season when it comes to how it drives while Ocon didn't have that feeling and how they really improved alonso's car to suit it more to his style without having to build a car around him. That statement of car built around one driver BS is just a poor excuse used to justify the bad performance of a driver.
@lifesgood4232
@lifesgood4232 2 роки тому
@@voidsax In ferrari, it's a different story. It was certainly getting made according to seb until mid 2018 where the team lost confidence in him and started going towards kimi. Both teammates drive equal cars so if a car is being developed according to one driver, the other driver would perform badly if it hinders with his driving style. Kimi likes oversteery cars, ferrari made it according to kimi after italy and the bad performances from seb started coming in, you don't forget how to drive overnight son. In 2019, the ferrari was just upgraded version of 2018 oversteery one. In 2020, it was just nothing, it was a full package of both understeer and oversteer combined.

Underground trains (tube, subway etc) can also use the same thing to save energy -- a bit of a ramp running uphill into a station to save the brakes and regenerate electricity, and then they run downhill after the station so they can get back up to speed with less effort. There is also an additional centripetal force that comes from the gravity vector of the car that naturally steers it without any input to the wheel. Where I live there are a lot of banked corners, and a lot of the time you just find yourself guiding the wheel rather than actually turning it.

I have a question actually, If anyone can help me answer it. Is it easier to follow cars around the banked corners ? other than the fact that increased downforce generated by the incline helps, are there any other factors that negatively influence and make following difficult? Thank you!

Great idea for a topic. Any motor sports fans would love to discuss details like this, and I was actually wondering what the effect to the banking at Zandvoort would be as I watched the gp.

How much of an impact is there from the inner and outer line when you see the elevation difference towards the exit part? I am curious as it seems that this track actually is high line centric. More speed through, better braking and better acceleration in the exit while, diving for the inner you are diving down into a pit you need to get out of on the exit. But does it have an effect and would it be better for different styles if the transition was longer at that part?

As soon as you showed the angles on the banking, it made perfect sense. Banked corners provide more grip, as the natural inertia of the car presses more directly in to the road surface of a banked corner than it would for a flat corner - Back to the 'wall of death' analogy for a visualisation of this. The higher the banking, the stronger this effect is, and the faster the drivers can take the corner. Isolating just the corner itself, it's not clear whether it's quicker to slow down more for the inside (less-banked) line with the shorter distance, or to carry a bit more entry speed for the outside (more banked) line with the longer distance. However, the wider outside line allows for higher entry and exit speeds, so in the context of a full lap, it's sure to be the faster line. We need more tracks like Zandvoort on the calendar. Tracks with interesting and unique approaches to some corners.

Good stuff. Thanks. I LOVE that circuit. That was an awesome race weekend. Question: If the cars weren't downforce cars, like if they were GT cars, would the higher line be as beneficial? Would the quickest way around be the more traditional line? Thanks for your great analysis.
@14stockfan
@14stockfan 2 роки тому
I think it still probably would be. The same principal works with NASCAR cars on ovals, and of course those cars are heavier and have much less downforce.
@kirkwoita8840
@kirkwoita8840 2 роки тому
It truly depends . Sometimes horsepower means a shorter line is the faster one. Other times it's the clean air and extra downforce that makes the longer line faster. In GT cars typically the banked corners of the American Rovals usually mean drafting for assistance or running a more conventional line. Watch some IMSA and Grand Am races from Homestead, Charlotte, or Kansas. Daytona has much more banking.
@zacharyradford5552

Not necessarily driving style and car setup would play a factor. The inside is slower but shorter the outside is faster but longer. Drivers need to figure out what line and style of entry, middle and exit that there car prefers.

The weird racing lines remind me of Monaco after casino, when the drivers all seem to turn to the right side of the track and then back to the left before the next turn. I never understood why but I took it that just the ground/grip was better on the right side of that part of the road

You forgot to mention what a rush it is to take the high line on a track like that. Due to the banked shape, and the increased grip, at corner exit, you feel like you are shooting out of a rocket. This track may be difficult to pass, but fun AF to drive!!

It's kind of like the carousel at the Nordschliefe...it's shorter around the the banked inner part, but it's smoother around the outside. For a very low ride height F1 car, the outer line is less upsetting to the car's balance.

Interesting explenation, especially the end the inside line cannot accelarate hard enough when there is a car on the highline. But you miss something. I have driven the corner right from the beginning, when everybody was looking for the fastest line. What you don't see on TV is that the inside drops away, steeply. And the exit of is a climb, already for the high line. That makes the low line in a lowly powered car a struggle. So the slower cars were quickest to discover the high line is faster. But the middle line feels OK, because of the banking almost every line feels composed. I suppose that explains that in most classes (historic F1 for instance) almost everybody took the middle line. You should try it yourself

If you have ever driven a high powered sand rail (dune buggy) in the sand dunes of places like Glamis California where there are thirty to two hundred foot tall sand dunes, the winds create giant and small bowls. You ride the bowls like a banked turn. If your joy riding in the bowls, you cruise the entire face of the bowls, if your racing around in the bowls, you hit the crest of the bowl and cut straight down the face of the bowl taking a different line. This way is a much shorter line and you accelerate faster with the steep downhill angle coming off the face and are in a flat level direction coming out of the bank. You don’t have to deal with the inertia pulling you higher up the wall of the bowl, you have traveled less further and come off the bank flat and not drifting at the end of the bank and with twice the speed. I almost expected to see some F1 cars cut those banks in half for a pass.

The amount of steering lock they were getting in that corner was the first thing I noticed. That much at that speed is very unique in F1. Tons of fun to watch and I can't even imagine what it feels like to the drivers when they get it right. Definitely one of my favorite tracks now. Might be easy to say that as a Verstappen fan, but you can tell that all the drivers love it.

Just look up Homestead Miami in NASCAR. Same thing progressive banking. It’s awesome because when a driver is really dialed in they can put the car just a few inches off the wall through the entire corner
