Nearly a third of Americans didn't pay their housing costs in July. Now local, state and federal moratoria on evictions originally put in place during the coronavirus pandemic are expiring. While landlords may be sympathetic to tenants needs, communities face hardships when rent goes unpaid. A movement to cancel rent has been growing as the patchwork of solutions across the country leaves many renters falling through the cracks. Watch the video to find out why Americans are facing an eviction crisis.

Fresh vegetables are the cheapest groceries you can buy, and the cost of cheap food doesn't even compare to the cost of renting an apartment. If you need to share the rent with a roommate, then do it.

they haven't really been rising. just a little sad info, I made more per hour in 1993 than most places here in Pennsylvania pay per hour. a lot of of us made more 25 yrs ago than we do today. I had a basic job as a cashier in a dept store int he mall making $10/hr full time, our managers made anywhere from $15-$18/hr. that was common back then in NJ and many other states. sadly today they're paying less and the younger ones aren't thinking twice about it because to them it's the way things are.....they never used to be like this, people made more yrs ago, most jobs were full time, no one went bankrupt by going to college, and we were able to move into our own apt right after high school. they're royally screwing everyone right now with this current economy, big time. plus wages went up on a regular basis every year or every other year back then, not anymore.

rent being expensive is justified because they house-owners liable for multiple responsibilities like taking care of the house so that it doesn't depreciate the value of the neighborhood or paying mortgages. Theres more responsibilities of owning a house that it's just more convenient to rent. In my opinion they need to focus more on education and American communities than throwing unnecessary funds at the military, American High schools just force students to go to trade schools that sometimes don't pay enough and just makes America as a whole slow down.
@tongdawu2041
@tongdawu2041 3 роки тому
SunaArashi you have very valid points as society considers that a college degree isn’t a consistent method right now to get a stable job compared to finishing trade school. To add on it can also be dirt cheap compared to college. However, the cons of trade school is the limited job opportunities they are offered as they are taught one specific field in there job which kinda makes finding employment harder and backfired on you really quick. To wrap it up, Trade school shouldn’t be gold standard of success for people; rather we should make people more aware of their choices of deciding whether they want to go to trade school or college. If you know what I mean. Also trying not to be a shill for college education but rather just the basic survival ed. you need which brings awareness to everyone and hopefully improve the community as they will be somewhat wiser to solve its own issues,

the banks, most of them anyway, are crooked as hell. homeowners right now should be keeping an eagle eye on what the bank is doing with the mortgage account. this is how the housing crisis happened after 2008, banks were screwing around with the accounts when homeowners couldn't pay or has issues paying. and they're doing it again, already heard of a few financial institutions messing with mortgages already.

@aljawisa
@aljawisa 3 роки тому
God damn, the more interesting and insightful comments get little to no recognition. I'll add my own one. 10 years of living at an apartment and you own it. All prior contracts in favor of the old way of doing things are void. Property taxes are void. The CAFR shows the government doesn't need 'existence on the Earth tax' to take care of itself. The government shall be audited to show were the money the spend is being used on with all appropriate paper work every year. Damn I better chill. There are many good comments, but they don't super impress me. Yours did motivate me about that 'rip-off' part. The government and corporations made up rules for themselves without negotiation from the public (public hearings don't count because that's duly noted and duly ignored). The same should be done to them without negotiation and by popular vote from those not in the position of power or great influence. If those a-holes in power don't like it then to bad for them. They don't care when you're made homeless. And neither should a tear be shed for them when they lose power. Also they shall not be allowed to raise rent with this new system beyond normal inflation adjusted levels (that hole inflation thing is a bank scam too) nor shall they make paper work more complicated because then the normal rental process application. There's a ton of nuance I need to add, schemers always have something to make things more complicated, and squirm out of there responsibility. Some profit margin needs to be added into the picture otherwise they'll stop building apartments. Requirements need to be added, to make sure they don't build sub-standard cheap ghetto like complexes. That's enough for now to much writing. Brains don't read when there's to much writing.

I'm smaller landlord, and eviction is absolutely last resort for landlords. Its a huge waste of time, energy and money. I feel for the all tenants facing eviction right now, but a lot of small landlords also have decreased income now, and savings are finite. I also heard a lot about deadbeat tenants who have the same job, income and stopped paying rent because nobody can't evict them right now. So, they are living rent free for last 4-5 months. How is that fair? Unless state and federal governments will step in more aggressively, issuing housing vouchers, a lot of rental properties will go to foreclosure in 2020-2021, and that will hurt everyone. Banks won't be able to sell foreclosed properties quickly enough, and won't be involved much into rental business. Homeless have no social services to help them in the U.S. Unlike every other "rich" western country. I was one day away from being homeless when I got help from my local city council. They put me in temporary housing for a year before finding me permanent housing. They also helped with a voucher to take to a special store where I could buy cheap furniture and electrical equipment. Because of this help I am now on my feet, paying income tax and rent every month, as well as supporting local businesses with my food purchases etc. This system, in the U.K. is a win-win for the council, government income and the local economy. Any city with a large number of homeless, even if they get no benefits, hurt the local economy enormously!

It’s frowned upon in the United States to not live on your own. Some people in the United States have this 1960’s mentality were you work from the entry level position and then make your way up the ladder, then from there you could potentially have enough money to buy or mortgage and pay for your families expenses on one income, but that is not the case anymore, especially when you look Up bureau of labor statistics and see on average people in the USA are only making 30k a year in individual income, that’s on top of rising cost of living too. Nowadays it’s best to share expenses with family or roommates and then invest from there.

Here's my question: when landlords evict all their delinquent tenants, who do the landlords expect will replace their previous tenants? Are they under the impression that a new wave of tenants is waiting in line to move in? Nobody wants to move right now. Practically nobody has a job. Who has money to move and pay a deposit, or wants to move in the first place? Seems like a major oversight. Landlords are still thinking in a pre-Covid mindset. The only way to attract new tenants would be to lower their rent significantly.

Where we live it takes months to get somebody out. They have to be at least two months behind before the landlord or property manager can file with the courts it takes usually 30 days to get a hearing and then the person is given a 30-day notice. So for someone who gets evicted they go minimum 4 months without paying rent. And those are often the people who leave the property with significant damage that takes both time and money to repair . My husband and I rented three different places over seven years. The lowest we paid and rent was $680 the highest we paid was $1,300 a month. In 7 years we were not one time late on our rent. We now own a house but when we rented it was always very annoying to us because every year we got a significant increase on our rent despite the fact we were never late meanwhile there were constantly people being evicted for not paying their rent and we knew we were the ones paying for that

@@NUCLEARARMAMENT Thank you for the information. According to www.statista.com/statistics/205121/percentage-of-poor-asian-families--in-the-us/, 7.6% of Asian Americans live below the poverty line. My reply to Tygerwolf was more of a response to others suggesting Asians as "the Elite group" or "Asians are usually not poor." The unemployment article that I posted explains that Asian American's low poverty level is due to education. There is a larger percentage of Asian Americans with advanced degree compare to its peers. However, those with only a bachelor degree has a higher unemployment rate compare to European Americans. In the same article, you will also be surprised that Asian Americans suffer longer unemployment compare to African, European, and Hispanic Americans. Yes. Asian Americans do better than African and Hispanic Americans in terms of staying above poverty line. However, have you consider why? My argument is that Asian Americans have stronger family support. Therefore, the impact of loosing a job is not as devastating. The rent delinquency rate graph on this video that Tyerwolf pointed out just shows Asian Americans are great tenants. It does not show that Asian Americans as the "Elite" group with more money.

cus govt represents insurance companies.. who's hook is "health care" but goal is to fleece you. it's a scam. if you get any health care it's an oversight or incidental to that fleecing.
@channell11

Because things cost money-and people have to be productive to generate that money. When the government shuts everything down for "health reasons" you have to ask yourself what is the cost-benefit for stopping economic activity over a virus with such a low mortality rate.

The cost of housing is so out of proportion to labor rates. When I see people offering $15 and hour for labor it’s like that’s the rates paid 30 years ago, while housing has gone up 1000 percent
@michelleb1
@michelleb1 3 роки тому
My prayers to all. It is time to Labor. If you have to work two or three jobs do it. When my husband left me that is what I had to do to survive. It's a Mindset, you have to stay positive and know you can pull yourself up. I am a Hispanic woman, never once have asked for a handout. Life is short make the most out of it, even if you have to work in a restaurant at night, and work during the day. You have to push yourself to not be homeless.

Maybe rent prices would finally come down after mass evictions leading to smaller pool of renters. No one should ever have to pay more than 20% of income on rent.
@JeorgeGUY
@JeorgeGUY 3 роки тому
Its going to be worse, not better. Lenders will see more risk (higher lending costs), higher taxes, higher insurance, less good jobs, fewer new builds of new units pushing up competition will forward to the tenants leading to even larger expansion of homelessness.

@@purplenights1 Yeah, but that's preying off of desperation. In fact, a $15 dollar an hour minimum will strengthen the economy. There does, however, need to be rent caps, or there needs to be a public option when it comes to apartments. Check out what Vienna, Austria did. It's a damn good success story.

I was homeless on & off for 6 years. It was pure torture. It took me years to rebuild my life from that. It takes wanting to escape it, someone helping and an employer understanding that you’re homeless & you don’t have an address. I’ll jump off a cliff before I’m homeless again.
