Dr Iain McGilchrist is a psychiatrist, philosopher and literary scholar. He is a Quondam Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford, a Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists and of the Royal Society of Arts, as well as a former Clinical Director of the Bethlem Royal & Maudsley Hospital, London. His previous book, The Master and His Emissary: The Divided Brain and the Making of the Western World reached international recognition and acclaim and has placed him as one of the greatest thinkers and philosophers of our time. The most compelling aspect of McGilchrist’s work is its beauty. What a visceral, meaningful correction beauty can provide! Solzhenitsyn (in his Nobel Prize acceptance speech) rightly asserted: “…if the all too obvious & the overly straight sprouts of Truth & Goodness have been crushed, cut down, or not permitted to grow [as is obvious in our day], then perhaps the whimsical, unpredictable, & ever surprising shoots of Beauty will force their way through & soar up to that very spot, thereby fulfilling the task of all three.” McGilchrist has done with beauty what many of the great minds of our time-in their relative approaches to Truth & Goodness-failed to do.

Omg, I'm so thankful these two amazing archetypes are with us in these crazy times. I can't think of two better human examples , to remind us of how not to throw reason out the window. Everyday I watch people jump off metaphorical bridges because their commercial algorithm keeps playing them antidepressant adds. It's bananas. As enjoyable this dialogue was, the best part was the simple gesture of Cleese filling their water glasses. Possibly one of the most ancient displays of good will that a person can express to another. As graceful as Aquarius.

Disconnection is the source of not knowing. Which is the root cause of all fears. But often we need to disconnect to aspects of our normal routines in order to free ourselves and transcend boundaries of blindness. To only stay in contact with that in life that we already know about imprison us and prevents us from expanding and transcending. That’s what laziness actually is.

One version of the 'lost key' story is: After searching for a while the helper asked: Where did you drop it? And the one seeking his lost key, answers "in my own house". Then why are you looking here under the street lamp? "Because there is more light here than inside my own house." This 'losing the key inside my own house' adds a further element of 'the key is lost inside each of us' yet our attention is always directed outward toward experience that is given to us by the light of the five outer senses and the concepts or structures of consciousness based on the light of the five senses. Our consciousness receives the light of the five senses that gives us the impression and later the general concept that we are in the body. However it is also true to say that the body is an appearance in consciousness. Yet until we can have a direct experience of this, it seems impossible and carries no real weight or meaning for us. William James referred to the consciousness of the infant as a "blooming, buzzing confusion". Developmental studies of Piaget and many others these days have shown that initially the infant consciousness is completely undifferentiated. Then over 0-3 years of interaction with the environment (note here that the body and its parts such as the hand and mouth first are implicitly used then later word labels are applied to them). Several points to consider are: Interaction with primary caregiver and the environment as a whole yields the implicit view that caregiver or mother is "out there" in that separate body and I am 'in here' in this separate body. These impressions form a structure or template in consciousness that gives us subject-object knowing that comes to include self 'self vs other knowing. This is a developmental revelation that is a necessary structure at this stage of seeing and knowing through the subject-object mode. However this stage or structure through which we via the subject-object dichotomy are knowing is also a limitation or structure developed in consciousness. It is a limited way of knowing. What would it mean to us to realize that our body is an appearance in consciousness? Can there be direct experience of undifferentiated consciousness and come to realize that consciousness is primary and what we call time and space are constructed perceptions that are needed and very handy yet they are not fundamental. Rather they come out of the subject-object mode of knowing. So where did we lose the key? One way to say it is: we lost it at a very young age when we became identified with the subject-object mode of knowing. While this identification was necessary developmentally, as an adult we may be able to see deeper. Rumi tells us the 'body' is a guest house and that if all arising perceptions are welcomed with wonder (including the perception of the physical body itself) without our insisting that these perception, thoughts, concepts are fixed and final based on our subject-object dichotomy, then we are on the way to 'finding our lost key". Rumi "Darkness is your candle. Your boundaries are your quest." Darkness here is the complete wonder of not knowing such that we are not imposing subject-object knowing on our experience. Boundaries in the wonder are useful and needed to function in time and space orientation yet we also can and need to subject them to complete wonder when they arise in our experiencing if we want our 'lost key' to be revealed to us. It seems to us that we can only see and learn 'in the light' of subject-object knowing. However our lost key can only be discovered in the "darkness of wonder" in which the subject-object mode of knowing is seen to be secondary and 'after the fact' of true wonder.

I read that you shouldn't really drive mindfully. Anyway, I tried it, felt incredibly nervous, and never did it again. Driving is done entirely automatically, and when you concentrate, it falls apart. In mindfulness there's a tendency up focus upon only a few things, but driving means taking in a load of different things and data all at once, so it's best to leave it to autopilot, although some people say they can do it.

Second nature is learnt with repetition. That why first you learn to drive you are probably excited but labelled your feelings wrong. You call in anxiety and then prove yourself (Ego self) right or so you believe. Your nature includes being anxious in case you are eaten but that is not what will happen if you drive. Of course its better to be wrong and alive than wrong and dead. The 'Chimp Paradox' will help in the form of method and structure. 🙏💟

It is a form of knowledge that cannot be picked up from a book or a conversation with someone. It the sort of knowing that shines through from within yourself if you embark on a journey of genuine spiritual practice. It is the sort of knowledge that no one can refute or take away from you. Why? Because it is based on your own direct experiences.

A native American saw a TV and asked :»What is that ?». The person next to him said : «Its pictures on a screen». The native : «No, you misunderstand, I mean what is that.....to me. How does this tool affect my spirit, my body, my feeling, my mind and my society ?». We might have something to learn from the «savages» in regard to how we connect to ourselves and the society. A native Aboriginal Australian have written a book «Sandtalks». He believes Aboriginal thinking is needed in order to save the world. For hundered of years we have taught native how to make tools. Now I guess the time has come for them to teach us something about human needs, the needs of the earth and how they are all connected.

Okay gentleman, to come closer to 'what is', one needs to stop talking. Talking happens, when the 'oh so logic' brain supports the 'me' or 'I' it has created, making it the wonderful talking person. There isn't any truth in that. Both not in the person and specially not in his brain thinking it. Anxiety is not lost, by thinking, is it? On the contrary: thinking creates anxiety. And we can't put aside anxiety, with the quality of this brain who caused it. Even so; we can't stop making wars with a brain who makes them. we can't stop separating people with a brain who makes the separation. we can't stop feeling better then others with a brain who makes this 'me' being better then others. The 'me' or ego is false, which never comes to the truth, although we might 'think' it does.( Already thousands of years) Only question is then: where did I loose myself? And what would happen if I managed to set aside the importance of thought? It is simple: I would experience the 'what is'. ( btw, there isn't anxiety in 'what is', cannot be.:-)
