/* ----- VIDEO INFORMATION ----- */
Now like many others I spent years and years waiting for a live action version of Sandman. The graphic novel is something that's always been close to my heart and just after I finished Uni I ended up getting a minimum wage job in a shop working about 30 hours a week. This gave me about £800 a month and after bills and food came out I was left with a little bit to spend on comics. Now at the time DC were slowly in the process of rolling out their gigantic Sandman Omnibuses. These came in at about £80 each which was a lot of money for me at the time. I saved and saved and saved up for them and eventually bought the first volume. I burned through it in the space of a weekend and even though I'd had the work hyped up to me quite a lot, I was still completely blown away by it. I then saved up and bought the second volume and the book just seemed to get better and better.
Now sadly due to my money issues at the time I had to sell both books but they've always held a close place next to my heart and everytime I hear about Sandman I think back to those days of when I was living week to week enjoying the simple things in life.
Hearing that Netflix was adapting a live action version of Sandman really piqued my interest and incase you don't know, bringing it to screen has been a massive endeavor for the creators. If you listen to the podcast Best Movies Never Made then you'll know they did a big breakdown of all the original scripts and it's clear there's been several people trying to get this off the ground.
Initially pitched as a movie it's now a ten episode tv show that stays very faithful to the comics.
Nowhere is this seen more than in episode 6 which adapts The Sound Of Her Wings and also Dolls house Part 4.
These are two of the best issues in the entire run and the reason that Netflix put them together is because they both study life and death.
In the first part of the entry we watch as Dream joins his sister Death as she goes about her daily routine of meeting people after they pass away. The second following Morpheus as he meets a man who has been granted immortality on the same date every one hundred years.
Now the first of these always struck a chord with me when I was reading it. Death is something that we all must face and it's still a subject that we know very very little about. People spend their entire lives either living with faith or in the absence of it and we all have our own thoughts and beliefs on what will be waiting for us.

I love the portrayal of death, she is kind and guides those so they aren't alone when they pass. It's the best version of death, one that we all hope to greet us. This episode was a masterpiece in film, each death hit harder than the last, in comparison to the deathless life of Hobb.

I lost my son when he was only 1 day old after he fought extremely hard to live; coming back not once but twice. Watching the seen with Death taking the baby was very emotional for me because ot actually personified the way I think of my own son when I think of his death. I'd like to think that he is wrapped in grace feeling no hurt or pain, and although his loss is a wound that does not heal, I do find some comfort in knowing that he is okay. Facing death is extremely hard but I like to think that when we go, our spirits travel to light; it's the only thing that makes the loss bearable. I really feel like this episode embodied that since Death was so kind and that is why it was my favorite even though it made me cry.

This episode was a masterclass in how to take common tropes and execute them perfectly. Even if you can guess where each vignette leads, it's wonderful how well it plays out. @pilgrimbutter
@pilgrimbutter Рік тому
The comics in the most part are short stories, so I think you'll be pleased. In fact if season 2 gets made, they'll adapt volumes 3 and 4. Volume 3 is full of short stories, from dreams of cats to Shakespeare and the deal he made with Dream. Volume 4 is more of a straight story that I won't spoil. I really recommend the comics, the drawings and Neil Gaiman's writing are really amazing. The show is a great adaptation, I really thought they were going to mess it up.
@notAshildr
@notAshildr Рік тому
@@pilgrimbutter To me it feels like they might be skipping volume 3/incorporating it as standalone extras. They've already done Dream of a thousand cats (which came as a pleasant surprise, as they could have easily skipped it) and did Calliope, which just needed to happen for the story to move forward. I feel like they won't do the other ones I'd love to see Night Dream, and it does tie into the main arch, but you could easily skip it by merely changing details later on. I think Facade might get skipped entirely, as the TV series seems to try to steer clear of the superhero stuff and the characters are kind of one-off, and it doesn't even feature Dream, being a Death-centric story.

I also really loved the small change in the series, which is based on the fact, that in comics Dream was captured for about 70 years, so he just made it for the next meeting. In the series, Dream was captured for over a 100 years (because "present time" in the series is about 2020, which is 30 years after "present time" in comics - about 1990) so he missed the meeting in the 1989 (cause he was in captivity at the moment) and therefore their meeting after he got free was even more impactful. This subtle change of lenght of Dream's captivity is also shown in the fact, that in series Unity is Rose's great grandma, where in comics she is just grandma.

The catharsis of meeting Death and how she loves and takes care of humanity as people die and go into the beyond made journeying through the world and history through Hobb’s eyes even sweeter to watch. I got the check to pay for the subscription from my mother after I convinced her it was a wise investment because it would help me with my reading. Then in about 3 months, sometime in 1989 I started receiving a monthly comic for SANDMAN in the mail. Considering I grew up in Alaska, the comic was usually rather thrashed upon arrival but I loved the it anyway. This Netflix series is done very well, great casting and it stays true to the comic. There is so much that we take for granted whether it's a another day, like the people who come into contact with Death, or simple the people who are in our lives and expect that to never change, Dream and the Immortal. We all need to take a moment to take stock of our lives and the people we fill it with because nothing is promised.

Great video. This was my favorite ep. Seems like everyone can relate to something in the story on a deep emotional level. Not much on tv can do that.

The episode was suprisingly my favourite by quite a bit. Neils depiction of Death makes me feel calm rather than stressed out when I think about how sudden it all can end. And the dynamic between Dream and Death is just great to watch.

I'm glad someone talked about it. No over the top action, or dramatic settings, just great dialogue/writing. I loved how thrown off Morpheus was when he thought that hob gadling would beg for death only to see him say "I have so much to live for."

I thought it a good decision to mention in their conversations, Hobb informed Morbius, he was investing in the slave trade and in their next meeting, Hobb agreed with Morbius of how he later, regretting his involvement in that trade. It shows how if you live long enough, you can be both a saint and sinner. Thank you, Neil Gamin for your storytelling. 👍

If there's more seasons, we can see Hobb later date an African American woman which makes him reflect on his past in slave trade even more, I hope we'll get to it. Watching him going through an immortal's version of midlife crisis while his girlfriend just enjoys her time at Renaissance fair was a thing of beauty in the comics.

Hob is one of my favorite characters, w his love of life & unending humor. An overused theme going around now is death as a temporary visit to a hotel or a train & almost every death is a minor inconvenience. Fun show

Hob is my favorite character throughout the comics. I love how, even at his lowest points, he never gives up on life. Yes, things may be bad at any given moment, but at the same time... he never loses sight of how good life _can_ be if you just see it through. I certainly wouldn't say no to a deal like his. I was beyond thrilled that they incorporated his story into episode 6 (issue 6 being one of my other favorite stories)... it's just a thing of beauty.

Hi Paul, have to say I loved this episode, some really great story telling here. I hope this is not to out of context but I really wanted to bring your attention to another great program which I think you would enjoy too. I could not see it mentioned on your channel, I would like to recommend - Only murders in the building. I have to admit it's not what I usually watch but I found myself taken in right from the first episode. It is currently nearly completing it's second season and once again I think it's fabulous TV. I hope you will take my recommendation into consideration and give it a try. All the best.

This is actually my favorite episode! I just wanted to say to whoever is out there and sees this, doesn't it remind you all of a 90's tv show? from the way its filmed to the credits at the beginning it makes me feel like I'm in a time machine like remember how the shows that were shown on Scifi or USA in the afternoon use to look years ago? I think of sliders, highlander, the crow, charmed etc Sandman looks like it would fit right in. Also Tom Sturridge resembles Stuart Townsend as Lestat

I would get one and sit on the floor and read until mom would come in the store slightly annoyed lol. I could only buy one of the books.. which I still have. The Wake. Then later on I saved some more to buy Dream Hunters illustrated by Yoshitaka Amano. If they are able to make that.. and make it in the style of Amano..... *deep breaths*
