While the T@G Camper is the best selling teardrop trailer in the country, I have my reservations. Why are there so many of these small camper trailers on the road? My goal is to find out if they truly are the best small campers or if T@G owners are just not doing their research. Join me and my special guest (retired fireman turned beekeeper) as we unravel the mysteries and misconceptions of Americas #1 selling small camper trailer.

We are new owners of the T@G's big cousin, the T@B 320 CS-S. I did a huge amount of research on what we wanted in a trailer. I had wanted the T@B 400 but my wife wanted an outdoor kitchen. We compromised and got the 320. Neither of us regret it at all. The initial build quality was excellent. Sure there are some minor things that needed adjustment but I assumed that was going to be the case. Overall we are extremely happy with it. During the research phase we went to an RV show to see what was available as alternatives. There was nothing. But what was most evident was the quality of most of the other manufacture's products. We saw rigs that were six figures that had drawer boxes that were stapled so poorly that the plywood boxes were failing. Our trailer has dovetailed drawer boxes. Is this necessary? No. But the entire trailer was put together with a high level of care.

I agree with your wife. I want that outdoor kitchen but I'd love to have a stand up bath and a shelf to make that first cup of coffee in the morning! After that, it's all about the outside!!

My partner and I just custom ordered a 2024 T@G Boondock XL with Black Canyon and Lithium packages. We also elected to swap out the microwave for extra kitchen storage. We are beyond excited to start traveling with it and seeing more of Canada. We love camping and the outdoors. We just don't want to haul our butts off the ground anymore with the usual tenting experience, especially as we get older. This camper is perfect for you if you are the same as us.

I am going on year 3 with my T@g. I absolutely love mine and have taken many places, both boondock and established campgrounds. I’ve had not one single issue with mine…camped in pouring rain (no leaks), camped in sub-zero temps (heater was great)….I could go on and on. And I did my research before buying mine…it was the only teardrop that checked all the boxes for me. I will admit they are not cheap. But they are not cash cows after the fact either.

I have owned both a T@B and a T@G in the past. Now I'm researching my next camper and I've been binge watching your videos to explore other teardrop campers. I just can't find one I like better, even though a microwave and water system are wasted on me. At the age of 55 I towed my T@G from Minnesota to Glacier NP, to Yellowstone NP, over the Beartooth Highway and back again with no issue or concerns. It is so easy to tow! The T@B was more scary for me to tow, but being able to stand up in the trailer is a huge benefit. Still deciding but keep coming back to the T@G.

We tried to make that trip twice the last two years. And both times things came up. May and the boys say we have to make it happen this year. You kind of sound like us. We want our cake and to eat it too. That is why we often have two trailers in the yard. And why we were working with Charles to make one trailer that could do both fairly well. So hard narrowing it down.

Hello fellow solo traveller! I too owned both a T@b and T@g (at the same time, lol). I sold the T@b, it too was a scary towing experience for me. Being 60+, I value the simplicity and ease of the T@g. Standing up and moving about was a boon in the T@b, and I loved the interior space. But finally decided the simplicity and ease of towing far outweighed the comfort of standing. My side tent tethered to the T@g offers the same ability to stand and move about .

I have a 2018 Tab 320 Boondock and love it! The build quality is outstanding. The year we got it we went to Ucamp for a week of fun, food and friends. While there in Sugarcreek Ohio we toured the factory and talked to some of the folks who are NuCamp and they were all top notch! In 2023 we had water get into the rear floor section, we brought it back for repairs at the factory and they fixed it like new. They have Great customer service and go above and beyond to take care of their customers! And yes the Amish work at the factory in many different jobs. Peace, MD

I had a 2014 Little Guy Silver Shadow 6x10, which was made around the time Little Guy and NuCamp parted ways. It was similar to the T@g and was amazing! It towed like a dream, handled all sorts of terrain, and was large enough for two of us and a dog. It was an Amish-built, all wood interior, clam shell kitchen, with air conditioning, simple plumbing, and solar capable. The only upgrade was putting a Froli bed system underneath the mattresses for added comfort. When my husband became ill and we had to sell, it doubled in value. I miss it every day and I can't wait to hopefully own another one, maybe a bit smaller (5'-8') one day. Thanks for this awesome video!

Our 2004 T@B is 20 years old and still looks practically new. We inherited it from my wife's aunt, who practically lived in the thing. There's no telling how many thousands of miles she put on it before us. The only major repair has been a thermostat for the AC, and a new converter. I would have replaced the converter anyway to take advantage of the newer lithium charge profiles. Our version was built by Thor before Nucamp purchased the rights, so they are built even better now.

Thank you guys for convincing me not to cheap out when I finally get to a place where I can buy one of these. I really should already know better. I've owned dozens of campers over my lifetime. Also, I was married to an RV Tech for 13 years so I understand the race to the bottom! I know these things are built to rot. I listened patiently to the stories every night and I have cleaned and resaled and even helped replace rotten floors and walls on many a trailer and the first little trailer I bought as a newly divorced single mom years ago was a 1969 Aristocrat, Low- Liner, and the kid that was swelling it said that everything worked and nothing leaked. He said all the right words just in the wrong order! NOTHING worked and EVERYTHING leaked!😂 Now that I dished the drunk RV tech my kids are all grown and I'm having grandkids. And desperately trying to be able to afford to retire. I want to be able to camp with my family and have m outdoor kitchen ready to go so I can feed the masses and put a sleeping baby in m my little nest and feel more secure when camping alone. It's perfect for someone like me. I was brought up in a family where this wasn't called booney camping.This was just camping. We spent 2 weeks every August at a high mountain lake playing and picking huckleberries and fishing and hiking. That's what my parents loved to d and so passing that on to my grandkids is just a huge part of my life. I've been hooking up and backing up trailers since my dad turned me loose with my first horse trailer at 16 to head up to the Cascade mountains to ride the PCT with a bunch of 4H friends by myself. But now, at the age of 60 hooking up a trailer with a big heavy hitch system is hard on me and I've had to come to the realization that I just can't do that anymore. By the way Brad, I am single and pretty much have given up on men but I sure would like to meet a gentleman who just loves to camp as much as I do! 😂😉

NuCamp and Little Guy are the best when it comes to mass produced trailers. I actually looked at a T@G to live full time in. I love the skylight window and interior, except for the door windows. I would prefer if those could open completely with a screen option, or better yet have a screen door. My biggest point for not getting this trailer is that it isn’t beefy enough for off-roading with my Jeep Wrangler. Plus there wasn’t enough storage space in the front compartment. You can’t lock it either and getting a real solar system on it seemed problematic. It seems that if you want a “turn key” teardrop this is a great option. It’s much better than something like the Bushwacker. I bought a dedicated off road camper from Tiny Camper Company. It’s completely composite with a Timbren off road suspension and the wheels and tires match my Jeep, which is great. I also have 800 watts of rooftop solar panels which a Bluetti AC200Max power station in the rear. This powers EVERYTHING I need including my microwave! A microwave is a great thing to have when camping!

Legit! When I started my first teardrop trailer build in 2007 I toured the Dutchman (which later turned into this T@G). I was impressed by the layers under the outside skin, the braking system, and it's size. Since then, I've always complemented them but I won't use the term "Teardrop" with most T@G trailers until the Boondock came out -because it most reflects the size and purpose of a teardrop. The others I always call "Teardrop Shaped Trailers". They are mass produced but a good product (certainly not the norm in the RV industry! lol). I'm glad you highlighted that fact. Great Video. I have a 2015 Tag. It is and has been the PERFECT camper for me! I don't love camping but I do LOVE traveling. I can tow this little gem without problem, fits my dog and me (he was the travel conundrum with hotels) and can trick out the inside to be comfortable and luxurious in all the ways to make a cozy, safe little home away from home. I have never turned on the TV, but there is that if you like. The speakers are fabulous, the kitchen is perfect. I love cooking while on the road and can make sumptuous meals in this fully functional galley. The operations are simple, so maintenance is easy, parts are standard and therefore easily replaceable if needed (rarely). The build is strong and secure. It's a fabulous choice, customizable (I make a single bed with a low cot, easily accessible storage underneath), built a tiny hanging rack for clothes, carry a port-a-potty, have a cozy little rug. I boondocks sometimes but mostly plug in at state and national parks with working fan, ac, fabulous windows and an aftermarket awning. Have towed in the mountains, swamps and snow. There isn't a climate that has proved challenging. Plus there is a robust online community to ask questions and share experiences with. What's not to like?

I love my 22 Tag BD. But i was very critical to Nucamp about the build not the build quality. I said they needed to change 4 things. And they changed 3 out of for on the newest models. 1 need full size spare tire,2 needed fenders you can step on to access the roof rack,3 need to have a 12v fridge, 4 need to get rid of the electric heater and put in a propane heater which they havent yet. Other than that i love it and I boondock 100% of the time, so i just found my own work arounds for all that. Great video.

Great video Drew. I looked real hard at the Tab 400 but it just wasn't off road capable enough for me. For such a mass produced trailer i was impressed. I agree that they have less issues posted on various FB groups especially for the Tags which have less components that tent to have issues. I have a few friends that own tabs and the truck campers and love them. One thing that bug me is they are sold at big box RV stores and one has to deal with that nightmare. I will follow up if i hear of any problems folks might be having. FYI- Nucamp is definitely better built then Little Guy trailers!

I went to the factory in Sugar Creek to have them installed the Yakima rails that were not in my new purchase because of no supply! I was fully impressed with the people…yes, they are mostly Amish with tremendous skills! I have the Boondock model. I also have them replace the roof fan (kind of loud for me) with a MaxFan 7500…what a difference…totally whisper. My problem now is that I had a case of bad shingles a couple years ago that fully destroyed my right ear and also killed my right side Vestibular nerve! In regards to seems a properly bonded composite joint will not break at the joint. It may break due to vibration, impact or stress next to the joint, but the joint itself will not leak or break. I know this because I spent 35 years in the bicycle industry. The last of it were building composite high and bicycles.
@PlayingwithSticks

Wait, I think we are talking two different things. I am referring to a typical screwed and glued bond. Or in this case with Road Toad Alumilite is tricky to work with because it is hollow-core. Conventional screws and fasteners don't work because they are fastening to mostly air. Craig and crew had to create custom aluminum extrusions to hold the edges and attach components. So no bonding in the sense that you are referring to. Edit: Sorry I thought this was a response from today's video. But, this can be applied to this video as well.

Glad to hear you have found what works. I read a stat a few years ago that say the average camper will own 5 different campers through their camping journeys. I originally thought this was due to poor manufacturing. But, in fact I have come to learn that it takes a few campers to find what works for you. And even then, life changes and your needs change, time for a different camper.
@bjnslc
@bjnslc 3 місяці тому
There's certainly a learning curve. We got a 320 to keep the trailer smaller for my imagined backcountry uses and large enough to meet my wife's concerns about habitable space when you're confined to quarters. You'll take a depreciation hit of course in the first year, but Tabs hold their value very well.

The one thing that New camp needs to do is offer an off-road hitch option, and a true off-road independent suspension height torsion axles are not designed or meant for Offroad. Tab 320 with the Boondock package, but mine was actually called outback because it was an older model; the only issue I have was the fact that it would bounce around behind my vehicle off-road suspension, just couldn’t handle the off-road trails.
@PlayingwithSticks
@PlayingwithSticks 6 днів тому
You know an offroad hitch would be nice. But, like you have been mentioning in other videos are these trailers truly meant to go offroad? If they aren't I would be frustrated to see them promoting this as truly offroad and adding articulaing hitches. Before they add that hitch, I think there are a lot of things they would need to do in terms of frame reinforcement, cabin structure, etc.

Is the T@G Azdel on both in side and outside under the filon? Is there still some wood framing in there? We had a 2014 T@B and it did not have Azdel but it did have studs and luan under the filon. But it was really well built and in the 5 years and 20,000 plus KM we put on it there were no issues, nothing needed to be caulked or resealed even though under the skin it was pretty traditional. Build quality was excellent. We sold it to get a larger trailer that had a seperate dinette and fixed bed and a nicer shower that had a much more aerodynamic shape that gave us better fuel mileage. Still have fond memories of the Hobbit House as we named it.
@PlayingwithSticks
@PlayingwithSticks 3 місяці тому
That is a good question. I always assumed they used an aluminum bird cage construction with the external wall being fiberglass with Azdel (polypropylene). Sandwiched in between the aluminum framing would be block foam insulation. Hopefully others see this comment. Is the chassis and interior frame both aluminum? Or is it an aluminum chassis with a wood frame? Glad you asked this Steve. I know Intech really wants people to know they use aluminum as their bird cage frame. You would think if T@G was using it, that they would be highlighing it as a feature. As I am writing this, I am starting to think they may still use studs. Thanks for sharing your experience with the T@G as well.

The two I really like are the 14 ft with a rear galley (like most teardrops) and then this new one with a rear bathroom and STILL has a great galley! They evidently do not use any wood whatsoever in their trailers.. Would just love to see your review on these if you can.. Thanks..

One thing that has changed in the last five years is the advent of large capacity, solar battery banks. This makes it ideal for the small trailers with microwaves and TVs and electric heaters to work off grid because of these large solar charged battery banks, he can throw one in the back here trailer and when you get to camp throw your solar panels out and plug your trailer into your battery bank. It really is a game changer.

Funny he points out the fender. That's the weak spot right there. Had to rivet mine with some extra aluminum underneath twice. Of course, I did a lot more to my T@G Boondock than most people: tore out the microwave and replaced it with two drawers, tore out the air conditioner because nobody needs that boondocking and replaced it with a shelf. Tore out the electrics and replaced them with a 200Ah LiFePO4 setup, added external solar panel ports so I can add solar panels when parked in the shade, added an inverter for da Mrs's Hairdryer, added a water transfer pump system that can transfer water from a canister on the front to the tank (much easier than refilling that tank from a canister) and a few more things like a different mattress etc. By the end of the day, these are all changes/improvements over the factory model and the only thing I ever had to fix is the caulking around the fan on the top which was starting to decay. The next thing I will have to fix is the vinyl hinge at the "trunk" door. I wish that trailer would come with a timbren suspension and it would be almost perfect.
