Ok so The Batman has one of my favourite opening half hours in a comic book movie ever.
That's some high praise and you only have to look at some of the opening scenes in The Dark Knight trilogy to know that Reeves had very some steep competition.
Christopher Nolan was an expert at introducing the villains and though Reeves does that brilliantly with the Riddler too, the scene in which he brings in his version of Batman is a whole nother level.
But why is it so captivating and what does the director do to give us the best introduction to Batman that we've ever had?
Well that's what we're gonna be breaking down in this video so hold onto your batts, hit that thumbs up batton and make sure you subscribe for videos like this every day.
With that out the way, I'm your host Paul aka the guy who's bat to the bone, now let's get into the breakdown.
Ok so after we watch the horrifying scene in which The Riddler murders the Mayor in his own home we cut to the cityscape of Gotham to see the cesspool that it's devolved into. Criminals occupy every corner and we very much get the impression that they've used the night as a weapon for decades in order to terrorise the good people of the city.
Darkness clouds the entire landscape but this is cracked open by the bat signal which pearces the skyline. After Gordon activates it we see it cuts through the clouds and hovers over the landscape, standing as a beacon in the darkness. This is where we hear Bruce's voice come over the top of the scene and here he introduces us to the city.
Narration is something that's often used in films to set the tone and it's a staple that's appeared in several detective noir stories. Through it we very much get Bruce's inner thoughts and how he sees not only Gotham but also The Batman.
It's a very effective technique and it was used expertly in Frank Millers Dark Knight Returns before he brought it over to Batman Year One. We even get a shot in the introduction where we catch Bruce in civilian clothes walking through a crowd of people and this is very much taken from Year One when he went out on his first night downtown.

I get that intention behind showing a public perception shift in Batman but by comic standards Superman is hope. Batman doesn't care for the most part on any good publicity. At least not by society's standards. His good publicity is people thinking he's a myth with a healthy dose of doubt. He is fear, he is vengeance, he is justice. That's what makes him so iconic and distinctive from Superman who represents hope and Wonder Woman who represents truth and love.

I love how realistic the fight scenes were in this one, compared not only to Nolan's or Snyder's Batman, but to the superhero genre overall... The hero gets worn-out, he gets outnumbered, he can only take himself so far, it takes him time to get back on his feet and the criminals also take their time to recover, it's just incredible and it really helps set the tone for the story... Reminded me of the Daredevil series, which was until this movie to me the only superhero product that genuinely had not only an engaging story, but engaging fight scenes

to add to this when he goes into the club as Batman he says: “do you know who I am?” and they laughed which shows that his fear hadn’t reached that far up the chain, until he gave them a good ol’ Batman beat down and chased down the penguin. It reminds me of an intense feeling of the one in the Nolan series - the Dark Knight (I think) when Gordon throws on the Batsignal and a colleague asks him why and he says its to let people know Batman is out there and this crook bricks it when he sees the signal and tells his friend he's not going to do the job. However, I do like the fact that the crooks - every single one - bricks it when they see the signal because they think Batman's in the shadows, or in the air, or in the alley and the thing about it all? They never say anything: they all just look like over their shoulder thinking they know they done wrong and something is coming. Vengence? no....PUNISHMENT. Punishment is coming. One of my favorite thing about the fight scenes in this movie is that Batman gets hit. It isn't like in most superhero flicks where the goons wait for their turn to attack. They fully gang up on Batman, but he just rolls with the punches and keeps moving. He barely even acknowledges them unless they're serious hits (like the shotgun at the end of the movie). I think something great about this scene being juxtaposed against the closing scene which got missed is the response of the citizens themselves. In this opening scene, after batman dispatches the gang, the victim's immediate response is to cower from batman saying "please don't hurt me". In the closing scene, as batman fastens a citizen to a medical evac helicopter lift, she grips on to him as though she perceives him as a greater symbol of safety than the medical evac team. Only willing to let go of his arm and be taken by the helicopter after he comforts her. The stark contrast just further reiterates the arc he goes through in the film as he transitions into a symbol of hope from a symbol of vengeance portrayed through the eyes of the public.

There’s so much I love about the 3 criminals’ perspectives, each of them should logically know Batman has bigger fish to catch than themselves, but it’s the fear of “What if tonight, that’s me?" That causes 2 of them to run away. And while I was listening to this I remembered something I thought of during the Penguin chase scene; Batman must seem invincible to them. In the same way Superman is looked at like a god to everybody else, the criminals watch Batman tank guns, bats, tire jacks, fists, bombs, 500 foot falls off of buildings, cinder roadblocks, pseudo natural disasters/flooding, veritable armies of goons+themselves, and logically he should be feeling exhausted, but he just keeps coming. The sense of powerlessness you would feel as a criminal watching this shadowy god of a man walk off everything you throw at him would be overwhelming. People know Superman won’t be harmed by guns, but Batman should because he’s just a human. And yet he doesn’t seem to care if you hit him 5 times or 50, he’s still gonna get you. He’s always there, and he’ll always push through whatever you’ve got between you and him.

The Batman was brilliantly written and portrayed on the big screen! Everyone appreciates how this Batman is like a mix of a highly intelligent, resourceful private detective like Sherlock Holmes, a reclusive, skilled fighter like John Rambo who can take out multiple offenders at once all by himself, and has the coolest gadgets and arsenal of weapons at his disposal like James Bond all in one under his signature cape and cowl! It was interesting to get to see Batman's early experiences. I just wish WB would have integrated this young Batman with the JL one that was played by Ben Affleck! I think we could have seen two related but different universes seeing Batman's early career progress. Obviously, Patterson's Batman is in his early to mid 20's so he's about 25. Affleck mentions to Alfred in JL that he's been fighting crime for 20 years so that timeline could have placed Affleck's Batman at about 45 still young enough with to physically kick butt with that older man strength and more muscle mass after years of working out and experience fighting dangerous criminals! The way they can manipulate storylines now with the intro of different alternate universes and realties it is still possible to pull off to extend the stories. But, they need to give us clarity ASAP!!!!

The music was a great complement with parts of it giving off a Darth Vader vibe. The acting was flawless. Brilliant chemistry between the Bat and the Cat. My favorite version of Commissioner Gordon for sure! Colin Farrell was unrecognizably perfect as Penguin. Creepy Riddler was ultra disturbing. Zoe's Cat was raw and fierce, made you wanna take care of her even while knowing she could take care of herself ...time stopped for me in every one of her scenes. Alfred and Carmine were both subtle but engaging. I didn't want it to end. It was dark and I usually don't like dark...but it was so hopeful...still can't figure out how they executed that contradiction so beautifully. I want to claim it's my fav Bat film but I better wait until the new wears off and I watch it again. It's 10 out of 10 for me as the only improvement would have been to have more!

Extreme Marvel fan here. I went into this movie skeptical, and was overwhelmingly pleasantly surprised. Coming off such a blockbuster that was Spider-Man No Way Home I couldn't imagine this movie would hit me the way it did. Robert Pattinson was an absolute tour de force. His performance evoked Charlie Cox's Daredevil for me. The dark, gritty, sullen vigilante struggling against their own mind. The dark, melancholy tone throughout the entire movie sucked me into it so entirely it's almost embarrassing to admit. I couldn't look away. The music elevated everything to another league. The noir take was beautiful. I found myself trying to piece together Riddler's plan as if I was there with Bruce. The twist's genuinely shocked me, and it felt like an interactive noir game as much as it was a movie, If this is the tone/writing the trilogy will use going forward, they have me hook, line and sinker. No Way Home was the first movie I ever went to theaters multiple times to rewatch. This movie will become the second. Absolute masterpiece.

The standout example for me was the mayor's crime scene investigation, when Batman sees the bloodstain on the floor from the murder weapon, which clearly no one else has noticed yet, and doesn't say anything, just pointedly looks at it, then the crime scene tech realizes what he's communicating and she hurries over to document it. No dialogue necessary, but the entire interaction told a story in itself.

this movie went ahead to blow everyone’s expectations, it was dark, just like batman is. it said so much with doing so little, the riddler was sick and twisted and it had me at the edge of my seat. this movie was amazing, truly changing

The scene where the Batman comes out the shadows for the 1st time reminded me of Inglorious Bastards when Eli Roth aka the Bear Jew comes out of the tunnel ready to swing his bat Both felt very intimating and both scenes got across who these people were and what they stood for...also both very deadly

Oh, I ALWAYS want to see more, Paul, Pretty Please! Great Music, awesome cinematography, only a hair on the long side, but was enjoying it all the way through, great installation for the Batman.

This was the most perfect Batman live action movie that I have ever seen. It is exactly what I as a fully obsessed bat fan, have wanted for decades. I like TDK in spite of Bale. I always hated the voice thing and if I'm being honest, if Ledger wasnt in that trilogy, and Bane didn't make my heart hurt for him, I would not have liked it.

I entirely agree. I think the Nolan movies are almost carried by the villains as opposed to the batman himself. They feel like more of a study of the villainous machine that is gotham and its products. Batman is almost a secondary character. This new Batman movie focuses almost entirely in batman (yes catwoman, the penguin and riddler are fantastic) but it genuinely feels like a movie about the batman

People so quick to disrespect the king as soon as something new comes along. This movie was solid, its potential is exciting. But beyond Heath's legendary acting, the pacing (movie keeps you on the edge of your seat for 2hrs 45min) and godly script is what pushed TDK over the top. This movie doesnt have the airtight dialogue nor does it go beyond surface level examinations in any of its definitely intruiging themes. Its pacing is inconsistent to straight bad. Is our picture perfect Batman one that almost gets wiped by a handful of untrained incels? Bale took down Joker, his thugs, AND a full SWAT team simulataneously regardless of the poorly choreographed fight scenes. Excited for the next movie, but this doesnt hold up to any kind of substantial evaluation and cannot touch TDK

So dumb that everyone is putting this up against TDK. It’s two completely different style movies. It should really be compared to Batman Begins. Nolan obviously killed it w TDK. Ledger will never be touched. Zimmer’s music will always be my favorite. But Bale’s Batman was hit or miss. Nolan can’t direct action sequences. Gotham was a bit too nice and neat imo. This one has a completely different style and tone. It’s obviously more accurate to source material. Great action and characters. After seeing it twice, i really can’t find a flaw. People complaining about the length is laughable. Every single scene was needed. The detective stuff was spot on. Not one cringy line of dialogue. Just absolute perfection. Imo. Regardless they both are 10/10 masterpieces. Can’t wait to see how Reeves continues and Batman upgrades to the hero he is. I don’t think it’s fair to compare anything to the Nolan Trilogy until Reeves is done w his take in however many films he does.

@@VizzyBon3 it doesn't compare. I guess I should've said the whole trilogy but most people do just focus on TDK. We finally got a live action batman with the appeal and perfection of the animated series. It is grounded. It is more comic accurate. You can tell Reeves is a true fan and has pondered every aspect of the psyches of the characters so they have the depth to make us invested, and empathetic to them.

@@qownsqud3207 Eh...I think we didn't watch the same movies. TDK and even other Nolan movies had quite a bit of wasted dialogue. And while they were usually pretty useful, they could have been cut out without taking anything from the movie. This movie, on the other hand, had every piece of dialogue adding to every character and progressing their characters arcs, specifically Bruce's and Riddler's character arcs.

The cinematography reminded me of a live action BTAS. And it worked great. I felt the story went in a different direction of the mystery and was a great example of his detective skills. My problem was the reason for donning the cowl, vengeance. It was for justice. Batman was created always for justice. That's why Batman doesn't kill. His pursuit isn't to seek revenge for his parents murder but help the city his family built.

Got major Mad Max vibes with the shot of hit Boots walking towards the flipped Penquin's car. One of Best Car Cash Scenes ever. The Rain, the dark, the traffic, the explosion, the cheesy way the JUMP came together.

This was the first "loud" Batman who you can hear coming, and it works so well. Heavy footsteps in the shadows, and it even sounded at times lie he was wearing spurs. I dug the Drophead's body language emanating terror, and the can of spray paint rolling into the shadows was like something from a horror movie. Kudos to Jay Lycurgo (clown gang initiate) who said little but showed so much through his face and body. You could see and feel his apprehension towards striking the innocent subway rider, and his absolute terror at seeing the Batman. Him trying to stop the other gang member from shooting Batman was a nice touch. I hope Matt Reeves has something in mind for this character later.

Is it just me or were the fight scenes throughout the movie that much more brutal? It totally blew me away with how raw and genuine they felt. You could feel Batman’s rage with each punch more than other movies in my opinion.

I've been to see The Batman four times now and each viewing has always left me wanting more! The best thing about Batman, in general, is that there's a serious amount of variety to keep others interested and happy. Each instalment over the years has brought something unique to the big screen and as a result, we each have our favourites and preferences so there's no right or wrong here. For me personally, The Batman at this current moment and time has become my favourite take on our Caped Crusader!
