For me the plateau was with my listening comprehension. I could speak and read relatively well, but couldn't develop the skill to comprehend at fast paces.

You are right about the personal level. Generally speaking, if we are learning something, and the knowledge we are learning has no personal connection, the learner will not want to learn the topic.

I always know which skill I'm weakest in. For a long time it was listening comprehension, so I concentrated on that. Now it's oral production. I know the words when I hear them, but when I need to dig them out in real time during a conversation, I often struggle. So now I'm giving extra emphasis on having more conversations. But always, always, I am consuming as much input as possible from podcasts, to youtube videos, to books in the target language (French, in my case.) I'm generally able to study seriously for an hour a day, but most of my 'recreational' reading and video watching is now in French, so I'm probably consuming more 150,000 words a month. This has me moving pretty quickly from B1 (DELF certified) towards B2. Finger's crossed, but I'm expecting it to take about 6 months. BTW, I'm 70 years old, so age is no barrier! It's the best hobby I've ever had. Keep going!

Hi dear Zoe. First of all thank you for your useful content. What you say about this phenomenon in learning is totally true. I learned English and German and beside these language I work as a web developer so I had and have to learn a bunch of technologies and most of these technologies are programming languages which partly have some features in common with learning a language. In the process of learning, I've always felt something like this and I have a special name for this part. I say this is the deadly zone!! :)) As you said, most of people give up when they feel they make no progress and this is where they give up. So it's very important to train your mind, in order to pass this difficult stage. As always I enjoyed your videos and I love the way you speak Farsi (Because I'm from Iran.) Maybe I'll learn Chinese someday if I have enough time. That would be definitely one of the most difficult challenges in my life.

For me, the friendship of native English speakers at work is the best language learning. The friend is on vacation and can't wait to return. After that, I think watching English movies may lead to learning.

For me, Plateau is always the vocabulary part. From A2 to B1. Due to lack of vocab, everything is a problem to understand. But as soon as I reach a part that I can read an article with only few new wrods to learn. By that time I am able to understand listening and watching videos to a very very acceptable level. That's because since day 1 of learning, I make sure to practice listening in new language by podcasts or watching videos online on UKposts.

Exactly the same thing happened to me some time ago. I'm learning German with "Nicos weg" and it's been a few weeks since I reached the B1 level and I realized that I can't manage them due to the large number of words and that's why I decided to read a story book and change the way I learn for a while Tenth to improve my weakness. I have been reading the book "SHORT STORIES in GERMAN by OLLY RICHARDS, A2-B1 level" for 3 days now. It is a wonderful book and it is really great to manage and review words in a paper book. For Arabic learning fellows , . When I started , I felt confused . I started reading Quran daily , although its not exactly what informal speakers speak in daily life , but it is still a good practice , I'm learning Turkish and Chinese characters , so I decided Arabic next year , I wanted to mixup in the language , and Quran was really helpful , grammaticaly , conversationaly and for Being Arabicaly 😅 . Its sound like poetry as every Ayat ends in rythm . So , you'll might find it interesting . Happy learning fellas

Whether for english or german, learned in high school, there was a moment of "floundering", for german because I was not motivated .However I was subsequently able to relatively master english, as for german, I realized, having to practice it for professional reasons, that I had kept the basics learned in high school and my re-learning was very quick. I can read arabic with difficulty, I don't speak it but I understand a little of the maghreb dialect, I'm learning chinese and I'm quite motivated (several hours a day), I deplore that compared to the number of speakers the resources for arabic are much weaker and motivating, which would require analysis. One of the reasons that motivates me to continue learning chinese, in addition to interest in culture, taoïsm, qi gong etc is precisely abundance of resources on internet, learning sites, blogs , films, TV channels etc. Icône de validation par la communauté

I just love this format when you speak closely, it feels more friendly, while when you are at distance, I perceived it very formal, like I am watching a school teacher, which is not a bad thing itself. The first is more enjoyable. 😊 I increased my difficulty for English starting to read academic articles and journals, in addition to my general interest books. Like you said, those books were too easy and didn't challenge me enough to progress. I am also coping with fear of starting conversation with a tandem partner to improve speaking. Recently, I have started to listening audiobooks, which I didn't like before. Hello the video is realeased just in time when i want to make progress in english practices (to reach C Level ) and learn Mandarin (for understanding glyphes). The plateau was for me the communication and comprehension skill in english due to the way we learned at the elementary and middle school in France. After i dicided to move forward with the enrollment in a Brtish university in the UK. I realized that's my english was so bad at the beginning. Then my comrades and new friends of the promotion helped me to make new comprehensive inputs also the output due the intensive stress i had encouter. The plateau effect is the way of how we learn and who teach us. I definitely do not recommend to deal with national education system , especially the french, for a language learner because they re degradant and grammar test are useless based only on memorisation and not practices. By travelling and enrolling to a foreign university is way better and also to find a right tutor as well.

Ive been struggling cuz learning with books and being immersed doesn't make me happy anymore but output is the key for me to finally speak Russian after 5 years of not doing it because of fear (being introverted is not nice or cool, it literally ruins your life), but here I am and I deciding to not have fear today 😠✨️

I have a question if you have time what do you think about learning Spanish and Italian at the same time. I think guessing they borrow about 15-20 percent from each other? It could be confusing given they way the double consonant words are pronounced or would that be of no consequence. Any help would be welcome

You've learnt 6 languages and yet confused the Tunisian and Turkish flags. Jokes aside, I respect your hard word, I speak 10 languages but not all of them as fluently as you do. You seem to have put great effort to Arabic pronunciation and language which I gave up after 2 months. As an update, my Chinese language partner was the reason I didn't give up Chinese and China, otherwise I would probably have gone to Japane wehre I feel more comfortablae and speak the language fluently. But my language partner not only helped me through the language, but also through the cultural shock. Thanks to her I feel more at home whenever I go to China or speak with Chinese people now. Also having a girl/boy firend helps a lot in language learning if you are single :)

para mi, es un poco dificil a descubrir que necesito mejorar, mi nivel en español es aproximamente B1, (probablamente un poco menos de b1, aunque es cerca b1) he estudiado español solo por 1 o 2 años, antes de eso, en esquela primario, tuve una maestra de español, y en esquela secundaria tambien, pero son fueron inutil para hablar o entender español, fue simplemente para leyes locales, es necesario a enseñar niños en Arizona por 2 años al minima y las clases de español aqui no son suficiente a hablar bien en español. Pienso que necesito practicar mas de conjugationes, necesite estudiar un poco gramatica para escribir esto, (tenso pasado es un poco dificil a recordar cual tenso a usar), obviamente el mejor manera a mejorar mi español es practicar y practicar consistentemente, solo estoy un poco impaciente. libros en español son util, encuentro una palabra que no entender, buscar y escribir el significado de la palabra y repitir la frase para entender el significado del frase entero. (esto texto es para practicar tambien en sinceridad) Español es mi mejor idioma despues de Ingles, y no sabo el processo para aprender un idioma en completo desde 0 a C1~ cada paso es nuevo para mi, es un aventura pero es un poco dificil a veces

A gentle correction, at around 3:00 you say the "breaking through" you mean to say the "break through" a tiny native speaker point. You are amazing I only speak 1.5 language, which is why I watch you-- to learn. Elsa seems amazing, but I would first go to a native speaker, get them to point out pronunciation errors and THEN use app to train speaking or at least record oneself.
