I gained this fox's trust, and now she comes into my house for nightly visits. I live in the countryside, so this is not a fox who is used to humans.
Here she is being hand fed in my kitchen, not in her winter coat, and after she had puppies:
• Hand-feeding wild fox ...
To love the feral soul, is to love without condition.

There's something profound about an encounter with a wild animal. A few years ago I was walking in the fields near our house when I suddenly felt watched, but couldn't see anything. I continued walking, and ended up face to face with a fox, just lying in the shade near the treeline. I was within 5 feet of him by the time I saw him. He never flinched, just stared back at me. He was so relaxed I couldn't believe it. I was able to crouch down and get a photograph. After 5 mins I began to worry he might be hurt, because he wasn't trying to get away from me. I tried to get closer and he casually disappeared into the trees, not really panicked, just like, 'Too close bro.' Don't want to sound like a Disney character, but it was kind of magical. I often think about it still.

I too had an encounter with a wild animal. A raccon size of a dog sitting on top of my fence. I struck it forcefully with a wooden baton and he turned to me slowly looking annoyed but sleepy. Then I smacked it real good but it wouldn't barge, so I pushed it off the fence with the baton. I often think about it still because I'm afraid it's coming back for revenge.

I really loved your story, John and it made me think on one on my own. Im a big city boy so I live in a quite different biosphere than you and I know it might sound silly but I have dog and she has this strange energy with street cats. She is like a magnet to them. Nowdays there are less and less cats for some reason but we had a couple of years of some really amazing encounters at the point I felt like invited to have a glimpse on their privacy. We actually created bonds with three of them over the years and I still miss them. Our night walks were something else when them were around. Anyway, I think you've choosen your words very wisely. There's something profound and yes, it is magical as well. There are a few things in life that, in a way, make me believe and this is one of them. Thanks for sharing!

I had a similar encounter when I was 16. I live in Scotland, and was on a long-weekend trip with my theatre group to Loch Lomond. we were staying in this old Manor Estate surrounded on all three sides by a forest with a look down to the Loch. I was walking by myself through the forest one day and had just went down to a small creek. I passed a tree and turned around to find myself face-to-face with a young Red Deer. I froze, knowing how skittish they are, but she (I think it was a she) didn't seem bothered. I had a few sandwiches on me and I think that enticed her. She came tottering right over to me and started sniffing me. I offered a sandwich and she niddled at the bread, but left the ham. I grew up in the city and had NEVER seen a real deer in person, so I was amazed. She even let me pet her! We just stood there, hanging out for a good ten minutes or so, before we could hear people in the forest. She hopped over the creek and skipped off away through the trees.

Video descriptions says the guy who owns the house was already friends with the fox. That makes the fox tame, rather than merely wild. Also, wild animals have been known to enter human homes. Mice do it all the time. As for the manner in which this fox is doing it... bears, raccoons, and even deer have been known to do it as well. However, if a wild animal enters your home and you don't know that wild animal, you should be very concerned because it is indeed not normal. Any such aberrant behavior from wild animal that causes it to approach humans where it wouldn't normally is a possible sign of rabies.

I had a Wild Wolf encounter when I was 14, living with my Uncle. I was sitting at the Woods' Edge one day on a large tree log reading a Book. We normally had Dogs around the Property, so I always assumed the Dogs would wander around these Woods. I felt a Snout hit my back and creep to my Armpit. I assumed it was one of the Dogs on our Property, so I reached under my armpit to give it some pets. Keep in mind, I had still not seen what was under my Armpit, and I still was Petting it. I didn't realize what I was petting until it pulled away from my armpit, took a light prance about 10 Feet in front of me, and darted off after hearing a bunch of other people talking in the Yard from a Distance. The "Dog" I assumed I was petting turned out to be a Lone, Full-Grown Grey Wolf. Surprisingly, I wasn't as frightened as I was curious. No one else ever saw this Encounter, and everyone still thinks it was a Joke to this day.

But they seem to tolerate each other. I have fed the fox some cheese and fruit, and he's got a very happy look on his face. Any advice you could give me as to whether I should try to pet him or if it's safe to let him around our cats? I think he wants to be friends but he's shy and won't touch me yet.

First of all, always remember that he's a wild animal, do not try to touch him or he will bite or in best case be scared. I can feed this fox with my hands and my mouth, but she (still) gets scared if I try to touch her. Unless around the mouth and on the snout with a finger.. Apparently the Cougar got spooked, and make a little shelter behind a sofa, and took a nap. After cautiously checking on it with her cell phone camera, she backed off, got some drums, and sat far from the open door. She started lightly patting the drums and singing. After a bit, Cougar had enough of the singing and drums and slinked back out. Very smart to not freak out and scream/act like prey. I'm lucky enough to live smack in the middle of the Lake District and until the hunting ban, we used to see foxes all the time and had a vixen visiting our garden fairly regularly. She first started hanging around when she was very young (have a feeling her mother may have been a hunt casualty) so we used to pop a little cat food out for her. We never put much out as we did not want her dependent but whenever she came around (especially during the lean winter months) she would get fed. Since the ban almost 20 years ago we don't see foxes anymore because the farmers adopted a shot-on-sight policy once they were no longer able to control the wild fox population by hunting. (It was on foot with dogs and had been part and parcel of the farming year around here until 2005).

Fox, yes. Cute yes. Wild, not so much ;) That fox seems very tame, we also had a wild fox that used to come eat our cats food and it would almost eat out of your hand. And she would often come and see what we was doing when we was outside. Like one time we was doing pistol shooting target practice and after we was finished shooting she took the target and run away with it lol :)

Trust is everything. I have a wild cat outside and he lets me scratch his belly. Consistent feeding is the best way to show an animal you care about them. Don't expect them to be the same as raised pets though. They're still wild. They've survived without you this whole time, so don't expect them to react to things like a common house pet. That's a good way to get yourself bit. I would not recommend petting any wild animal unless you're aware of the consequences and are prepared to handle them.

This is important! A wild animal approaching a human *might* be naturally curious, or acclimated to humans, or it *might* have something seriously wrong with it. And you really don't want to find out the hard way it was the second one - rabies shots suuuuuck.
@crispinmcsticks

@@KSignalEingang as much as rabies shots suck, one thing definitely sucks more: actually getting rabies. Regardless, definitely be careful.
@TR_P

It is worse with foxes, and other "curious" animals. Remember that rabies comes in two distinct forms, and can mimic this "curious" behavior. If it does not aggress you, no need to ice it on the spot but I would not be willing letting the animal enter my house repeatedly. On the plus side if it does this several nights in a row without a change in behavior you can worry a bit less about the rabies, but with these animals it is an ever present threat. Unless you are immunized, it's a cat, or it's a dog that is immunized, no other mammal is safe from it.

I've seen a lot of vids of wild foxes in the UK who become friendly towards humans. Since hunting foxes has become unpopular, foxes are plentiful and the ones with a calm disposition learn that humans can be tamed. I hope that someday people will learn to coexist with our coyotes in America like this.

I like that quote. My mom and I have recently made friends with 2 feral kittens over the past few months. It really is a fun and rewarding experience. But as fun as it is, there are still many worries and concerns. Funny too, in a way. How they entered our lives in a time of loss and greiving and they too had just lost a parent. I'm just glad they're happy and taken care of. It's a harsh world out there. But, winter's coming. Gonna have to make sure they have warmth and shelter. My mom kind of misses the birds lol. They are a bit more scarce with cats living on the patio and playing in the yard!

I used to do night shifts, and there was a one-eyed fox called Nelson, who would come to see me at about the same time every night.
