Out of curiosity.. would it have been better to erect the trap first and have baiting outside the trap.. this would eliminate the need to "change things" after they were comfortable outside the trap and around it. Your thoughts
@JAGERPRO
@JAGERPRO 5 років тому
Great question. We earn our living performing feral pig control and must make performance-based decisions based on process and product efficiency. Wasting time is wasting money and an inefficient business will eventually go bankrupt. It only takes five minutes of labor to erect a feeder along with our cellular I.C.E.™ Camera. Strategically, we place feeders at least 300 acres apart to ensure multiple home ranges are targeted which helps identify the total number of sounders on a property or discover pigs have moved to another property. The feeder's digital timer dispenses the same amount of bait at the exact same time every day. Allow the automatic feeders and cellular cameras to perform all the labor during the conditioning process. The most accurate camera surveys for population assessment occur when pigs are conditioned to initially trust a feeder without a trap enclosure present. Building a random sized trap without knowing the number of pigs in the sounder is a costly mistake. What if a 15-foot diameter trap enclosure was built but there are 30+ pigs in the sounder? (1) You waste more time building a larger trap or (2) You educate more pigs than you capture using the smaller trap as any pigs outside the trap when gates are triggered will learn from the experience and become "trap resistant" to the process. Whole-sounder lethal control prevents any pig from surviving, reproducing or being educated to the removal process. Lastly, shooting would be more efficient than trapping if the camera survey only reveals one or two pigs. These are the many reasons why professionals conduct a camera survey first at a bait site then adapt the trap enclosure to the sounder population expending the least amount of fuel, time and labor to accomplish whole-sounder capture success.
@JAGERPRO
@JAGERPRO 4 роки тому
@Chew Chew Train - A "sounder" is a matriarchal family group of feral pigs consisting of adult sows (females) typically related via two or three generations and includes their piglets. A sounder of wild pigs is like a herd of cattle, a school of fish, a gaggle of geese or a murder of crows.

The US Department of Agriculture does not allow wild pork donations directly to food banks (federal regulation) due to swine brucellosis and pseudorabies. This is why it is very important to cook wild pork to 160 degrees before eating. Most of our hogs are processed by guest hunters or donated to local families and churches.

@Draggy654 No worries man but maybe i cant understand that pigs can be infestation and cant compare them with rats . As i said im professional hunter and member of a hunting club and i consider them game so this ways of dealing with overpopulation seem to me very cruel. But as i said on other comment thread id deal with them in some different way like selling and domesticating the hogs making them farm animals or something like that. I' ve personaly raised wild pigglets that we found alone with dead mothers. Even when one of my hunters killed few sows by mistake by not recognizing that they are nursing pigglets and when there were actions of controling the overpopultion of them, cause many people(farmers) will kill wolves that are natural enemies of wild hogs and our law punishes them very harshly but even than some wont stop doing that.. litteraly dudes come out of jail and do the same thing(if tou commit poachery you end up in 6 months minimum in jail).

+Tyler Moser Monetizing feral swine for financial gain will not control their population. Agriculture is the #1 industry in Georgia. It is NOT legal to transport a feral pig alive from the property in which it was trapped which makes it illegal in our state to sell pigs alive or transport them to a meat market without a special feral swine permit along with a a swine brucellosis and pseudorabies test. In our opinion, legislation should be passed in all states to stop intrastate transportation of feral pigs to stock hunting preserves, bay pens and holding facilities with heavy fines to those breaking the law.

I thought about this yrs ago but w/different details. My entrance didn't look like an entrance, b/c it was larger, much larger, as was the entire enclosure. Yours appears to be (approx), 40' across. My enclosure (actually drew one up) is one thats "trailer mounted." The 1st anchored post would be set where you determine best (can be next to or attached to an existing tree making it more natural). The fencing would be pre-spooled from mounts on the trailer in 20'-30'- 40' sections. The fencing consists of heavy ga. fencing, w/metal posts already attached, but the lengths used depends on the situation As the fencing is unspooled, the metal posts are driven in the ground forming any shape desired and "camouflage netting" was something I toyed with once the fencing was installed. Hydraulic post drivers are available that can be mounted to trailers for quick installs, or manual weighted "slide hammers" could also be used. A trailer mounted winch quickly removes embedded posts when dis-assembling the enclosure. Remember, these items are "1 time purchases" that can be used repeatedly, so depending on the size and number of jobs, they WILL quickly pay for themselves. When the shape is determined, there would be 1 LARGE opening that does not appear to be an opening. Hogs as you know relate spatially, so the smaller the opening the more cautious they'll be. The idea is to not make the hogs aware they've even entered an opening, or barely notice the overall enclosure (b/c of there sizes). Reusable tree branches/foliage that are set up around the entrance will also help. After the hogs enter my plan was to put the feeder at the furthest point away from the entrance. The biggest pieces that make up what I thought of was the gate." It would consist of 2 - 15' sections, made of the same material as the enclosure, with the pivot point at the end of the enclosures opening as you'd see in any fenced in back yard. I found multiple "auto-latch" systems to choose from, I just never went all the way with the whole idea like you have with yours. Anyway, years ago when watching one of these type of hog hunting videos, it was clear to me that the hogs had no issues with wandering from place to place if they didn't notice anything such as a narrow openings, and that it "seemed" open to them. I just imagined (while all the hogs were in the field eating and about to be shot while running away), a fenced in area around them that they never even noticed walking into...one that could be closed by those who were about to shoot them after they closed the gate, and now...none of them could get away and they could take their time shooting them while the hogs are "inside" a larger enclosure that they could set up and take down easily. Blame those few men that thought it a great idea to start planting this destructive beasts in strategic locations across the country. They have been around for centuries, but in the last 25 years they have been purposely planted in many previously low hog areas of the country causing their populations to skyrocket in those area, where native wildlife has zero chance of competing with them.

MetusBatmanV4 Our company performs feral swine control for a living and harvest 4,000+ annually. It is illegal to "sell" wild pigs in Georgia for human consumption and the US Department of Agriculture does not allow wild pork donations directly to food banks due to swine brucellosis and pseudorabies. However, this does not mean wild pork cannot be eaten. It is fantastic table fare, but very important to thoroughly cook wild pork to 165 degrees. To answer your concern, the feral pigs JAGER PRO harvests are processed by guest hunters or donated to local families and churches for food. Feral pigs are known carriers of at least 45 different parasites (external and internal) and diseases (bacterial and viral) that pose a threat to domestic livestock, pets, wildlife and human health. The threat of disease transmission from feral pigs to domestic livestock is a major concern to the farming industry. Several of these diseases are swine specific (both feral and domestic) but others can affect cattle, sheep, goats, dogs, horses and several species of native wild mammals. Infectious diseases that are significant to livestock include Pseudorabies Virus (PRV), Swine brucellosis (Brucella suis), Bovine tuberculosis (TB), Foot & Mouth Disease, African swine fever and Classical swine fever (Hog Cholera). Since there is a 7 second delay in between the time the farmer texts the command and the gate actually drops, what happens if a hog happens to be under the gate when it drops? If (when) that happens is the gate heavy enough to prevent the other hogs from shoving their snouts under it and raising it and escaping or is there some sort of a locking mechanism that prevents the gate from being raised back up until manually released by the farmer?

We previously answered your question on our JAGER PRO™ Hog Trapping (29) Integrated Wild Pig Control™ video ukposts.info/have/v-deo/roFqd4Jvjo1_xqs.html. We have never dropped our M.I.N.E.™ (Manually Initiated Nuisance Elimination) Gate on a pig. Our M.I.N.E.™ Trapping System is 36-feet in diameter and our spin-cast feeder with Dinner Bell™ only allows corn to disperse within a 15-foot circle in the center of the trap. Feeding pigs are at least 10-feet away from each gate threshold. A human observes the texted photo or video and triggers the M.I.N.E.™ Gate closed using wireless cellular technology when the entire sounder is under the feeder. A human operator is viewing in real-time and should not trigger the M.I.N.E.™ Gate if pigs are near the threshold. The sliding portion of our M.I.N.E.™ Gate weighs approximately 50 pounds and must be lifted from the center. The gate is designed to bind or wedge on the vertical if lifted unevenly from one side (as with a pig’s snout.) Also, our Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) is to euthanize pigs within 30 minutes of capture to eliminate escape attempts.

Feral swine can be eaten, but it is very important to thoroughly cook wild pork to 165 degrees. Most feral pigs harvested by JAGER PRO™ Hog Control Operators™ are either processed by guests or donated to local families and churches for food. Any carcasses NOT used for food are buried per Department of Agriculture regulations.

This might b a dumb question but we don't have hogs in New York yet. When you say sounder does that mean the lead hog?
@JAGERPRO
@JAGERPRO 5 років тому
A "sounder" is a matriarchal family group of feral pigs consisting of adult sows (females) typically related via two or three generations and includes their piglets. A sounder of wild pigs is like a herd of cattle, a school of fish, a flock of geese or a murder of crows. Correcting your statement - feral swine were first found in New York State in 2008. According to a 2012 U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) report, feral swine established four separate breeding populations in the state spanning six counties: Delaware, Sullivan, Onandaga, Tioga, Cortland and Clinton. Most of the state's feral pigs and their breeding populations were located next to enclosed private hunting facilities where pigs were raised for hunting purposes. In October 2013, it became illegal to import, breed or release Eurasian boar in New York. A statewide ban on the hunting and trapping of feral swine went into effect in April of 2014 imposed by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) to stop illegal transportation and release of feral pigs for hunting purposes. To our knowledge, USDA Wildlife Services was successful eliminating the established populations in all six counties and has did not detected any feral swine in New York since 2015 or 2016.

How about releasing poison bates immediately after remote closing of containment traps in cases when you can't get there soon, as when you are working several sites in the same area.
@JAGERPRO
@JAGERPRO 8 років тому
+David Hampel Currently, there are no poisons, toxicants or biological controls legally approved for use in the United States. Mainly because poisons and toxicants are not species specific and would negatively impact legal game species as well. Your recommendation would be counterproductive to our Integrated Wild Pig Control™ model as dead pigs in a trap for several days would ruin the trap site for additional captures. Our methodology teaches to shoot pigs inside the trap with a .22 caliber suppressed rifle immediately after they are captured. This practice prevents distressed vocalizations to any other sounders on the property which eliminates method education about the M.I.N.E. Trapping process. Our methodology also prevents pigs from urinating and defecating inside the trap all night and soiling the enclosure for future captures. Blood inside the trap enclosure does not effect new sounders from feeding during consecutive nights as long as they are captured in reverse order from traditional thinking. You may view this very efficient process on our "JAGER PRO™ Hog Trapping (16)- 3 Captures in 3 Consecutive Nights" video at ukposts.info/have/v-deo/gnqVf21ksIarx4U.html.

These animals send out distress calls. Do they send out "calming" signals or "stay put" signals? Would it be possible to record a good sound and play it in the trap?

We record and test vocalizations annually to develop more efficient control methods. The "signals" you suggest have not been proven effective by science or research.

It only takes 15-18 months for a trained and certified Hog Control Operator™ to eliminate feral pig populations from 10,000-acres. But there are several factors which determine how long a property remains at "zero balance" after a successful Integrated Wild Pig Control® (IWPC®) program has been implemented. Future reproduction and migration would have to come from adjacent properties since an effective IWPC® program would prevent escapes, method education and reproduction from the entire generation of feral pigs living on the property. Are neighboring landowners implementing a successful IWPC® program? Are there enough trained and certified Hog Control Operators™ in the county to effectively implement the IWPC® program? Has the state passed legislation to stop intrastate and interstate transportation of feral pigs? How well are law enforcement personnel enforcing these rules in the state? Are judges and the court system prosecuting those breaking the rules with heavy fines? How many criminals are illegally transporting and releasing new feral pig populations in the county? The amount of time a property remains at "zero balance" greatly depends on the answers to the above questions.

I have a question about the quality of the meat of feral hogs compared to farm raised hogs. Is the meat more lean side with the feral hogs what is the difference between the?? Pros and Cons?
@JAGERPRO
@JAGERPRO 4 роки тому
The long answer is an animal's flavor or meat texture depends on at least four things: what the animal eats, how far they travel daily, whether they have testicles and how the meat is prepared. A pig eating grubs, worms and fish may not taste as good as a pig eating corn, peanuts and acorns. A wild pig travelling several miles daily may be much leaner than a domestic pig walking 50 feet each day. The “gamey flavor” some people experience from eating wild game is the testosterone in all large male mammal species such as deer, elk, bear, bison, cattle and pigs. This is the reason all bulls (cattle), boars (pigs) and rams (sheep) are castrated on a commercial farm when raised for slaughter. Lastly, any meal is only as good as the chef who prepares it. The short answer is wild pork tastes great if feral pigs have been eating agricultural crops and you are not eating a 250-pound boar. Here is another perspective to consider. Feral pigs are known to carry bacterial diseases such as Brucellosis, Leptospirosis, E. coli, Salmonellosis, Tuberculosis and Tularemia; viral diseases such as African Swine Fever (ASF), Classical Swine Fever (CSF or Hog Cholera), Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD), Hepatitis E Virus (HEV), Influenza A Viruses (H1N1 and H3N2), Porcine Circovirus type 2 (PCV2), Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea (PED), Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS), Pseudorabies Virus (PRV), Vesicular Stomatitis Virus (VSV) and at least 45 different parasites (external and internal) which pose a parasitic disease threat such as Toxoplasmosis and Trichinosis to wildlife, livestock, pets and humans. The threat of disease transmission from feral pigs to domestic livestock is a major concern to the farming industry. Several of these diseases are swine specific (both feral and domestic) but others can affect sheep, goats, cattle, horses, dogs. cats and several species of native wild mammals. Infectious diseases that are significant to livestock include Swine Brucellosis, Pseudorabies Virus (PRV), Bovine tuberculosis (TB), Foot & Mouth Disease, African Swine Fever and Classical Swine Fever (Hog Cholera). Zoonotic diseases transmissible from feral pigs to humans include Leptospirosis, Brucellosis, E. coli, Salmonellosis, Toxoplasmosis, Rabies, Swine Influenza Viruses, Trichinosis, Giardiasis and Cryptosporidiosis. The seven-page brochure “Diseases of Feral Swine” vet.uga.edu/population_health_files/diseases_of_feral_swine_brochure.pdf written by the University of Georgia - College of Veterinary Medicine is the most thorough and informative document concerning this topic. Feral swine can be eaten, but it is very important to thoroughly cook wild pork to 165 degrees.
