I'm glad you pointed out how important it is to always install a new throw out bearing when you pull a transmission. If a bearing siezes, it will eat the pressure plate and everything else in there; it just isn't worth the risk. Don't ask me how I know that!

For lack of power- check for vacuum leaks in the intake! Not just visually, but hook up a smoker and smoke the thing. On mine there were a BUNCH of cracks in the old intake pipe (smearing rubber cement over the whole thing helped), as well as a few leaks around the throttle plate shaft. Patching all that made the old truck a bit happier and bumped up gas mileage a little bit. It's funny though, can hardly do 70 just hauling one person, but put two tons of stuff in the bed/trailer and it still performs the same! It's like these Rangers want to do work, great little trucks.

I concur. I used to drive one to job sites and in particular the automatic seemed to really enjoy pulling a load. Running empty it never really seemed happy and the shifts were all over the place. Surprising good on dirt roads though. I guess it just wasn't designed as a commuter.

In 1985 you were fortunate to get very far into the triple for hp, especially in a small truck. For the time the Ranger had sufficient power for what it was designed to do. I've just never liked Ford's electronic automatic overdrive transmissions very much.

Check the Throttle position sensor for the 4k hang up issue. Just a thought. Also, tightly wrap 1 layer of Duct tape around the knerled threads on the shifter handle and hammer home the shift knob. It wont go anywhere after that. Call an auto windshield replacment company and have them cut a piece of safety glass to the rear window dimensions.

I love the old Ranger. I have a 99 Ranger XLT that my dad bought new, 3.0 liter V6, automatic, power steering, power brakes, a/c, cruise control, am, fm, and cassette player. He only drove it a couple miles a day to and from his work. Around 2012 dad asked if he could park it under a carport at my house as mom wanted the space in their garage for her gardening. After about a year, dad asked if I'd like to have it. I immediately took his offer. Today it's back in the garage at Mom's. It gets driven about once a month. Still looks like new and has 55k miles. I'll never sell it. Maybe someday I'll pass it down to someone in the family.

Also, mine had a thing where the connection of the fuel pump relay connection in the terminal block was slightly wonky so it was common I'd try to start it with no fuel pump, have to go jiggle the fuel pump relay, and then it would fire right up. Seems like a bunch of my friends with rangers had the same problem, so it's always one of the first things I check if the fuel pump doesn't kick on. >_

I bought it with 64,000 miles on the clock. I swapped the 4.0 for a Fox Body 302W and I kept the AOD4 trans (which I regret because it had to be rebuilt five times by a questionable shop), and I also installed an Explorer Express Eaton M90 supercharger kit. It had shorty headers, a full cold air intake (that I fabricated out of intercooler piping), and a full 3" dual exhaust with custom 48" glasspacks and 14" chrome slant cut tips. It was only 2WD, but it was alot of fun in a straight line and it sounded AMAZING! I bought my dad's 94 Ranger with 125k miles from him for five hundred right around 2001. Ran a ton of errands with 2 60 lb labs in the front seat and I could barely shift the thing. Held on to it for 5 years until I could afford a f150 but it was a great truck with great memories. My dad passed away a few weeks ago and your story and pics of your father made me smile. Thanks-

Check the capacitors in the ECM… im having the same issue with my 93. Pulled the ecm from the driver front fender and pulled the cover off to find four capacitors inside had leaked and caused corrosion. You can find repair kits online that come with the capacitors you need, just clean the board up a bit and solder in the new matching capacitors.

Those rangers are great trucks. My granddad had one for about 18 years, it saw use as an occassional runabout, getting items that wouldn't fit in the car, towin' a small trailer to haul the occassional thing. Sadly he crashed it a few winters back due to black ice and a horribly paved section of interstate. (Off kilter, super bumpy and curved.) It wasn't in horrible shape, needed a new front clip but no structural stuff, new owner fixed it with some Junkyard parts and drives it often! Buut that segment of loud, droning highway driving reminds me of my 82' Toyota pickup, being younger at the time I decided it needed a muffler that doesn't muffle a thing, it just collects the noise for a smoother sound...It's so loud I can't go to a drive through without turning the engine off. It also doesn't do highway speeds!...Mostly because it's a 4 Speed, 4WD with 4.10 gears...I got it to 'go' 70, but it did not keep going 70. (But it did survive!) and 65 is so amazingly loud and so horrifically floaty feeling that I just don't...of course 55mph is marked in red on the speedo...I know it was The mandated speed limit of the time but it also feels like the reasonable top speed of the truck! ...Rambling aside it would be interesting to see this ranger get an engine swap!

I absolutely love everything about these rangers growing up. It was the epitome of the 1990s! The wheels, the color, the raised small 4x4 trucks. Such a cool little rig. I'd give anything if I could fit into one but I don't think they made these in an extended cab. Still wouldn't be a sporty as one of the single cabs. Really enjoyed the video guys! Somehow, this reminds me of how I got my first car. My dad bought a used Suzuki Vitara JLX as a compact farm truck when I was younger, and him and grandpa drove it for ages. At some point, the shifter broke and only 2nd, 4th and reverse still worked, so he put it aside and bought an Isuzu Pickup truck a bit later. The Vitara just sat and dad wanted to get rid of it, but I always managed to convince him to keep it. In the end, I got a friend to ask his uncle, who is an actual mechanic, to assess the car and he figured it was only some sort of small plastic bit that held the shifter in place, something that could be replaced in half an hour and costs like 10 bucks max. Few weeks later, dad got the part while I was away, we installed it, got it to a shop that fixed up everything necessary to get the car through the TüV, and then I had it registered to me on the old plates. I still have it, and I still complain about it reeking of dad's and grandpa's extreme smoking and it having no A/C. But I love the maroonish little cube, and I'll keep it until the floor falls out again.

So I had a 1996 Ranger Splash with the 4.0, 4x4, and the same M5-OD transmission. When I first got it, it too would surge in rpm even when I lifted on the throttle. The culprit was carbon build up in the throttle body and the mass airflow sensor also needed a good cleaning. I am willing to bet your Ranger may have a similar issue. Great video, awesome to see an old friend back on the road!

When our family out grew it, he upgraded to an f150 Supercrew we had for many years, after. We sold the Ranger to a close relative. I had a 1994 ford explorer sport that had one of the best V6 4 liter engines out there! Manual transmission went out at 120,000 miles. Rebuilt one lasted 12,000 then I got the OEM and ran perfect over 230,000 miles. That was over 15 years ago. If it’s been taken care of it’s probably still running today. That car never left me stranded, even leaving the head lights on during a 49er game at candlestick stadium. After the game fired right up. Transmission went out once when I was abalone diving and I made it home 50 miles in 4th and overdrive. 1st 2nd and 3rd made a huge loud thumping sound under the stick shift. I sure do miss that vehicle….

The first vehicle that was ever in my name was a 1994 Ranger. It was the 4.0 extended cab flavor and it was the same color purple too. Engine was a tank in it and was the best part of the truck. Transmission locked up on it after spending $3,000 fixing other issues in it. I finally called it quits and sold the truck for scrap value. Maybe should have thrown another transmission and transfer case in it, but it was a lemon since it had so many hands working on it before I got to it. But I do remember pegging out that speedometer one time running that engine to the rev limit every gear because I ran it out of gas (faulty fuel gauge).

Waited 10 months to find a small truck covid prices were insane at that time, same as Facebook market place people! Finally found a decent man, met him and looked it over, next day it was in my garage. He said (mileage unknown 200k 300k?) I do automotive, no rust on mine, I can still see factory paint all under my bed. I love. it fixed small things here and there but mostly elbow grease, wet sanded and polished the whole truck. I got lucky on this so far, about 4k and it Runs like a champ. Christopher
