I actually heard a really good reason for it: being as how Will never fully recovered from the trauma, as he's shown to want things to go back to how they were right before he was taken, and in a way, he's still stuck there. The change in haircut would symbolize him moving past his trauma. So the haircut he's sporting is quite sad for two reason: it's ugly, and it's traumatic.
