Ukraine claims to be using the US-made M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) to devastating effect against the Russians. Ukraine's defence minister has likened his troops’ use of HIMARS to “a surgeon working with a scalpel.” Washington recently announced four additional HIMARS to Ukraine which brings the US’s total MLRS commitment to 16.
Ukraine has demanded as many as 100 HIMARS, which equates to about 20% of the entire US stockpile. Experts say that Kyiv should worry more about its supply of munitions, not the launch vehicles themselves.

Firstly, this is the USA we are talking about, if they really wanted to, they have the capacity to increase production. Second even if they do burn through American stocks. Its not like America was in need of using them to begin with. Aircraft and Drones have been America's preferred method of delivering precision fire support anyway. And the US is in no way running out of those.

The point is that the US will first and foremost ensure that their own troops have enough of these units and enough equipment to use them. Former 13-M MLRS crew member here, just putting in 2 cents. For some reason, everyone seems to confuse Missiles and Rockets. And I'm not talking about the viewers, but the content creators. So to put in to perspective, 1 rocket will displace 6 missiles on the HIMARS. 1 missile can accurately take out a tank, or building, or whatever cords it's given. 1 rocket can do much much more damage, depending on the payload it carries, but has little use at the current moment in this war. In fact, I have my doubts that Ukraine has even fired a single rocket since receiving their HIMARS. Ukraine needs missiles, not rockets.... MISSILES!!!!! Ok soldiers. Carry on.

That is not only pedantic but inaccurate. Strictly speaking a missile is any targeted projectile, even a crossbow bolt is a missile. A rocket is a specific type of thrust engine. @@mytech6779 I'm not denying that you're wrong, however, in this case the terms are very specific. We loaded either Missiles or Rockets, and there was no mistake between. Bomblets, Steel Balls, Land minds, and even mini thermal guided Missiles are some that I am aware of. In fact your shorthand is really quite inverted, multiple delivery objects would be missiles as they are no longer attached to a rocket motor. Until now the Ukrainians has fired about 600 misiles. Let's assume the US can 'spare' 1/3 of their stock the number will still be aprox. 10.000 misiles for Ukraine. So, with 600 misiles fired there's still 9.400. left to hit Russian targets. Officials say the production is around 9.000 missiles pr. year. Add that with the years since the last larger use of these misiles happened. In around 30 years the stock will be around 30.000 misiles. And my ten cents are the US already ordered more misiles and probably asked if the production can be extended.

If they had enough missiles stockpiled for a possible war with Russia, they don't need to worry about whether they are fired at Russia now by Ukraine, or saved for later to be fired by the US. Ukraine is making good use of them to weaken Russia. Conversely, if the US is worried about having enough to for a potential fight with Russia, despite the fact that Ukraine is weakening Russia, it means the US didn't have enough stockpiled for such a fight in the first place.

The US could keep producing these rockets, but as the economic supply chain is really strained, this could cause whoever really runs America to tire of the Ukraine war. This is evidenced by the US regime's hope in an "off-ramp" for Putin to end his war; this hope is rather naive. Real question: when will the USA's interest in the war start to vanish.

It is extremely important that Ukraine preserve, protect, and deploy with utmost economy and accuracy (without wastage) all the HIMARS and all the rockets associated with them, as well as the sophisticated weaponry provided by the allies. (Russians claim they destroyed 100 HIMARS rockets, along with 120 Ukrainian soldiers, technicians, and foreign volunteers). The US and other arms-supplying allies should hold Ukraine accountable for the inventory sacrificially provided to them: if Ukraine can report that over 40,000 Russian soldiers have been eliminated, their leaders should also be able to give accurate tallies to allies of how donated weaponry was used.

The number of these missiles alone cannot justify the cost of not using them, when the Russians are firing silos of rockets, missiles, cruise missiles, air to surface missiles, cluster munitions and other munitions by the thousands. The real value is using these to critically disrupt, blind and confuse the occupational forces and then sweep them out. So the high value targets for HIMARS seem to justify its use, but it needs the longer range ones to make the real difference.
