If your window air conditioner is working but not cooling at all or not as good as it used to, you may be able to fix it easy. In this video I show how to take out, disassemble, clean, and wash a window AC unit. A very common problem with these window air conditioners is simply lack of air flow - a plugged filter or a dirty evaporator/condenser coil. Watch me clean my unit and you'll know what's up.

Jay your video is FANTASTIC! I watched your video this hot and humid morning after my A/C stopped working overnight. I could hear what I believe was the compressor but the fan was not working. I took my 12,000 BTU Friedrich air conditioner apart carefully following your instructions, brushed, hosed (inside and out) and straightened a few bent coils and this afternoon it is working again!!!! I think the hardest part was lifting the A/C out the window to the yard and back into the window by myself. Your video and teaching style are thorough and empowered me to believe that I could fix something that I knew absolutely nothing about. You really helped save the day! Thank you so much!

I tried to clean my a/c with a steam machine, it stopped cycling off after a few seconds, but it wasn't good yet, I took out the cover, I flipped the a/c to have the outside coils upwards, I used a water bucket (mop bucket) and emptied it on the outside coil, that did give it a new life, wasn't perfect yet... i emptied 1 more bucket and then it was really good, got all its power back. I emptied two more to wash the a/c machine completely (4 total) no more vibrations, the compressor got super quiet, best a/c ever, especially since it cost me $30 canadian rubles

I just cleaned my 38 year old AC as you instructed. I was going to just use a vacuum and rags but can now see that this would not have been nearly as effective. My AC not only looks much cleaner, it made a massive difference. It even sounds better. The outside fins don't feel as hot, as there is more air moving through. The inside is blowing more air as well. Thanks for the tips.
@markluxton3402
@markluxton3402 Рік тому
@@rm742 I did that, thanks. I clean all my regular fans and oil them usually more than once per year, so I of course cleaned the fan blades in the AC too. Correct that this is important, not just for efficiency, but balance and therefore noise too. This 38 year old AC was used hard but not for all its' life time. Where there is some rust on compressor, cap, blower motor, and a few other spots, I used a thin layer of Linseed oil. This is a drying oil, like what I use to season my cast iron cook ware(flax seed). The compressor gets warm so I wanted to use a drying oil, not one that remains wet(fire hazard). I plan to clean and add some paint to the cover, and add some new metal screws for reassembly. If I can get a new thermostat, this AC will work like new. OH I noticed that after cleaning, the compressor also does not get as warm. LOL I probably should get a new AC unit though, just because this one uses 10 amp for 6000 BTU.

Today June 8 2023, the air quality is at 185 due to the Canada wildfires, the worst in the entire world right now. Me, a student who is working an ok job that gets the bills paid was not in the current position to by a new air conditioner. The air conditioner stored in the closet sucked so bad last summer that we had to put a fan in front of it. I saw your video yesterday and I’ve just now finished dissembling and cleaning it per your instructions. I didn’t/couldn’t really rinse it out but I used my wet/dry vac a toothbrush and a kabob skewer to remove all the chunks of rust. The vacuum was helpful when using the blow setting to get into those crevices. Since I didn’t soak it and just used damp rags I was able to put the AC up as soon as I reassembled. I am sitting here now with a powerful Newly cleaned AC and a new skill I can offer my friends and family. I have 3 dogs and we all thank you very much hands down the most useful video I’ve ever come across

Thanks for the video. I was getting geared up to add freon to my big window unit. However, I noticed that there was no hot air blowing out of the back. In fact, I noticed that there was no air at all coming across the condenser coils. I slid it out of it's case and brought it outside. Upon inspection, I noticed that the fins for the condenser coils were completely clogged. Took off the fan shroud and cleaned them thoroughly. Works like new now. Thanks for inspiring me to take it out.

Re: "I've heard that making sounds makes it easier on your body". (I'm a nurse) Answer: when you bear down with effort and hold your breath you trigger a "vegal reflex", when you breath out through the effort it prevents this (making sounds is a good way to prevent you automatically holding your breath). In a young healthy person the vagel reflects might just lower your blood pressure and heart rate for up to 10 minutes, which can cause you to get lightheaded or faint. But if you have heart issues/vascular disease or are older it can even trigger a heart attack. So very good on your body to make noise or consciously make sure you're breathing out while exerting large effort. 😁 Health hack of the day.

After I got off work I took a hose inside flushed out on the inside then outside. Waited an hour to let it dry and turned it on and it once again started to cool my room. Saved me a lot of money as my window unit is actually a really big unit that also heats my room in the winter. Spent almost a grand on it years ago and was not ready to have to replace it. High dust area, so after watching this video I gathered the pluck to remove the unit and take off the shell and front fascia. Put it back together and had plenty of airflow! Thanks.

@@WordofAdviceTV In my case, my LG window air conditioner (which looks almost just like yours), was working fine until yesterday. It cooled my small bedroom very quickly right up until yesterday when, all of a sudden, it stopped cooling. At 1st I thought the compressor was not kicking in, just the fan working at low medium or high as usual, but after turning it off for 3 minutes and then turning it on in cool mode, with the temperature set at it's lowest (60), when I first turn it on, the compressor does kick in, but rather mildly, and it just barely cools a little. It actually helps to turn it off a short while because it seems the compressor doesn't stay on, or keep coming on, even though we're experiencing one heat wave after another, and the outdoor temperature low of the day doesn't even go below 80°. Therefore, it seems I may get more cooling after the initial start up at 60, to raise the temp to 81 or 82, after a while, so it will automatically turn off the compressor for at least 3 minutes, then cycle it back on after the temp crawls above 82. It's extremely, uncomfortably hot & humid lately & I'm sufferring in the heat. An inner voice had been telling me I needed to vacuum & clean the air conditioner & filter for the last week, but I had not done so yet as of yesterday, when it stopped cooling. I have now washed the filter & partially vacuumed and washed with a rag, the inside part of the in place, air conditioner, but still, only the fan is working fine. If it was just dust, I'd think it would cool less & less, but it cooled very well until yesterday when the cooling compressor only lightly kicked in. The cooling compressor has not improved after cleaning, so I was wondering if the excess dust that had accumulated before I vacuumed & cleaned the filter and inner fins, may have made it run hot and tripped an internal circuit breaker or burned up an easily replaceable, inexpensive part? The cord plug in, is a circuit breaker which I tested and reset. The air conditioner fan has continued to work fine, so I hope there is a circuit breaker or fuse inside the air conditioner that's just for the compressor, but haven't been able to see any indication of one, so far. Do you know if there's a fuse inside the air conditioner that can blow and cause the air conditioning compressor to not kick in, except for very lightly? Thanks in advance for any advice!!!😀

Excellent video, easy to follow too. My unit is exactly the one you're showing here, and LG8000, so that's great for me too! My father used to take care of these things but he's no longer with us so I'll try LOL. With your video I feel a lot more confident to even attempt it! I don't think I need to take my apart as far as you did - the only reason I need to look into it is because the "clean filter" light on the panel is lit (which I didn't notice until today!), it's only been used a few summers. Thanks so much for sharing your experience, it will be very helpful for sure!

I have a window A/C unit installed in the wall of my shop, it is not easy to remove. What I did that helps a lot is I put the sticky one-side velcro (hook part) around the intake grill of the unit and stuck on a piece of polyester quilt material over the grill. This is a very good pre-filter, it will get filled with sawdust before the inner filter gets really dirty. On mine, the grill frame comes out at the top like yours and will come up and out so I can take both filters outside to hose off. I have been running it for 14 years now.

another thing I like to do even though the fan bearings are sealed is put a few drops of light machine oil on the fan shaft, right where it goes into the motor. This actually helped free up a fan that was spinning very slow after it was in use for awhile as the motor heated up.
@averyalexander2303
@averyalexander2303 4 роки тому
I've never had any luck doing that but it's certainly not going to hurt anything and is worth a try if the motor is loud or draggy, or just as preventative maintenance if you want to. My neighbor just gave me a free AC unit with a slightly noisy fan motor and I tried oiling it and it made no difference, I don't think the oil went in since its sealed. Oh well, it's not loud and a little noise still beats the heck out of being hot any day!
@WordofAdviceTV
@WordofAdviceTV 4 роки тому
Great suggestion Kkovler!! Thank you! I would also tip the unit forward a little while doing this so that the oil is running down the shaft into the motor. Doesn't always work if the fan motor is already seizing up as Avery stated but it's definitely worth giving it a try
@new-knowledge8040
@new-knowledge8040 3 роки тому
Most of the motors use a felt wicking method to both store and apply oil to the brass bushing and shaft. Once this dries up, the motor starts squealing and/or slows down. If you tilt the motor and manually spin it slowly, you will notice that the oil that you apply to the motor shaft, slowly disappears into the motor. This continues until the felt material is back to being drenched with oil once again. I did this to my air conditioner motor when it hit being 16 years old and was squealing. Fortunately the motor shafts were exposed at both ends since the motor drives two separate fans, thus I could oil the felt located at both of the brass bushings. After that, all was new again.

@eksine 3 роки тому
@@averyalexander2303 if it's a sealed bearing you can pry out the plastic cover and clean out the grease and add new grease, just use a pick or something really sharp. if you can replace the bearing that would work too

Something to keep in mind when working around those 'radiators'... the fins on those things are SHARP and they will take a layer or two of skin right off your hands if you are not careful. They are also easy to bend up if you get to enthusiastic with the hose or a brush.

Can I dry dust those sharp things gently with a toothbrush (& then maybe some canned air or spray water?) I can’t remove the unit from the wall...it will have to be done gently from inside & then hose the outside.
@xaenon
@xaenon 3 роки тому
@@georgiegunn9577 On the outside coils, some water running through the fins while yous scrub (gently) with a brush should work, though I would recommend something like a scrub brush, something plastic with a handle and nylon bristles. Those bristles should be a bit longer than those of a toothbrush. On the inside, you probably don't want to run water through those if you cannot remove the unit. If you have a vacuum cleaner with a hose and a bristle attachment, I feel that would be a better approach. GENTLY being the operative word in both cases. Once again, I strongly recommend gloves. As I said above, those fins are very sharp and will lay you open very easily. They are also very easy to squash together or otherwise damage.
@georgiegunn9577
@georgiegunn9577 3 роки тому
Thanks! Yeah, a vacuum sounds great, but I don’t have one (which is why I thought maybe a soft bristled toothbrush.) ...& outdoors, I won’t have access to scrub any of the inner coils as it will still be in its casing since it will still be in the wall. But as water goes in there when it rains, perhaps s little hose down could listen any leaves or dust.🤷‍♀️ Works great when it’s coo...lmao...not so much when it’s 100 degrees...🤣😥
