The reason why Dev Patel’s Australian accent sounds off occasionally is because of how he’s not doing a totally original accent, he’s doing a recreation of Saroo Brierley, who was actually born in India but grew up in Australia. If you hear Saroo talk, he has very inconsistent Australian English pronunciations. Also as a fun fact, the real Saroo Brierley and Nicole Kidman actually helped Dev with his accent which is why it sounds the way it does.

@kammyhornsby2094 5 років тому
NorthernLights I’m aware of what science it is. As you stated in the previous comment you deleted (I’m assuming after you realized it overlapped with the definition of obscurity), the science of linguistics typically goes “unknown”, especially in this depth, by the general public. It’s not common knowledge even for the vast majority of educated individuals unless they chose that subject area to study and specialize in.
@Yarblocosifilitico

@kayladonnrichardson7384
@kayladonnrichardson7384 5 років тому
NorthernLights is correct, though. A well established science that's available at nearly every university isn't an "obscure thing". It's just an area of expertise. In the same sense, medicine isn't an "obscure thing", but only experts know ridiculous amounts about it.
@kammyhornsby2094
@kammyhornsby2094 5 років тому
Exactly!! One of the primary definitions of the word of obscure is “not well known”, which suggests that something that is obscure is not common knowledge. My mother-in-law studied linguistics as her major, and not even she can speak this knowledgeably on the subject. It is not common knowledge, or “well known” subject matter for the vast majority of people (including some specialists). I’m not sure why people feel the need to behave in such a dunce manner for the sake of being a know-it-all. If someone were to know an incredible amount about Anglo-Irish literature or Ornithology, the fact that the subject they’re so knowledgeable about has a name does not make the less commonly known topics within that field any less obscure.
@tuyen6163
@tuyen6163 5 років тому
Kammy Hornsby I would disagree with the word choice as obscure have certain connotations that don’t necessarily fit with the feeling I think you’re trying to encapsulate. A better word might be niche since it’s such a specific area of expertise but obscure would imply random and inconsequential like knowing obscure facts about underground Peruvian artists.

As an Australian, Kate McKinnon's is the best attempt at one of our accents I've heard. I grew up hearing exactly that little throat squeeze all my life. and unsualy for a foreigner, she gets the rising intonation pitched right.

I've got a degree in applied linguistics and I feel overwhelmed by this guy's knowledge of accents. I wonder if he lived and studied accents all over the world to get where he is.

It'd be interesting to see him to react to foreigners that have lived in several countries talking in English and see if he can catch the languages that influence the pronunciation.

I was imitating the characters in "Puffin Rock" for my kids and realized the same thing-that it's the vowel sound in ice in words like house and down, rather than the boat sound you hear in those words in Canadian English dialects. Erik definitely needs his own channel. These videos are fascinating.

I'm missing Scandinavian accents. Apparently they're very hard to get right for non-scandinavians and usually just end up being German. Would like your take on some of that
