In this video we meet up with my friend Lesa, who lives in a 1998 Chevy Tracker. This is one of the smaller SUVs out there, but she does a great job of making it work and having it be exactly how she wants.

I'll be 76 years old in January. You've used every space so you have lots of nice & handy things. I live in Northern New York so I couldn't live in a car in the winter. Thanks for the tour, Lesa. And thanks, Tristan, for dedicating a long video to it. There are so many rigs out there that we can't see them all in this much detail, but this one was well worth it, both to see the items Lesa has and hasn't included, *and* to see a little of the thought process and attitude that went into her choices. There's a lot to learn from this tour, so thanks to you both for sharing it!

Thank you for appreciating why I tend to be so detailed with my explanations. I only have so much time in a meeting or interview to give a person enough information to be useful. I think it's mostly about knowing yourself, which happens daily and over time, and using your priorities to make the wiser decision in the moment. Budgeting is real so is personal comfort. Thanks for watching Tristan's videos he truly is a professional videographer and interviewer. Keep living simply so you can travel light and often!

Hi. I’m a Vietnamese. I can tell you this. My mother’s fiancé, her younger brother, her brother-in-law were Vietnamese soldiers and all died in the summer of 1979 in Quang Tri. Once a korean- American asked me how I thought about the French. I didn’t understand what he meant at first. I told him that I didn’t have any French friends so I knew nothing about them. And he said the French reigned my country for about 100 years and killed many innocent Vietnamese. Here is what I responded to his question. We Vietnamese don’t hate the French citizens. It is the French government during that period of time that we condemned for what they did to us. Most French citizens were deceived by their government. And they themselves had to suffer so much from the war here, even many of them lost their lives in Vietnam. Now if you come to visit Vietnam, especially Dien Bien Phu you will see a monument there to commemorate those French soldiers died in Dien Bien Phu. There is also one monument in Hanoi capital to commemorate those American pilots died in air Dien Bien Phu battle in 1972. I hope you metal health problems will improve.

Lesa has it down. Geo Trackers were underrated. They were popular in Hawaii back in the day. I once lived out of an 86 Jeep CJ-7 for a couple of years and had a similar setup. I had a custom-built storage box in the rear. It had lift supports and an additional hinged wood piece on top that folded out the back creating a nice bed. Having had lockers on the axles I could camp anywhere. Had my mountain bike and a surfboard with me too.

I have a 2002 Kia Sportage 2 door that's very similar. I'm 6' and I can sleep on the passenger side with about 3" to spare. Instead of a board, I have a custom piece of foam that fills the space on the seat and my headrest is removable so I have another piece of foam that fills the gap. I use an inflatable mattress on top and it's very comfortable. I have a little pop-up tent that I store extra things to make room in the back. I also have a hard top (I think it's the same brand) and I have a mesh cargo attic that I keep the pop-up, foam, and other light weight stuff in.

While it makes my Prius feel like a castle, she is surprisingly uncrowded in there. Many brilliant thoughts and methods, some obvious, some not. "Why do I need curtains? I'm not naked in there." Deciding which stuff can be safely stored outside without worrying much about it getting stolen. Choosing storage (ammo box and tool bag) to level her bed. Putting travel stickers on door jambs and inside of doors, rather than the exterior. Resizing a cardboard box and adding contact paper to make a silverware drawer or other custom-sized compartment. Insulated cookie sheet (I have one kicking around) as stove platform. 64oz Ozark Trails insulated stainless bottle and gallon Ziplocs for gathering ice from soda machines. Thermos Shuttle Chef. Good stuff! The yellow bottle of HEET alcohol-stove fuel is methanol. While the liquid is toxic and causes blindness if you drink it, it burns very well and very clean, so I do use it as fuel for my own alcohol stoves. Probably 15 years ago, I bought 12 one liter bottles of 190 proof Everclear drinking alcohol (95% ethanol) for use while backpacking so that I didn't have to worry about spilling it on food, etc. I got it on sale for about $20/bottle at a NJ grocery store, and still have 11 of the 12 bottles. I extremely rarely use it, only when truly in a tight spot as far as carrying just enough food and fuel, and wanting it for first aid use also. For car camping, the yellow HEET methanol from any Wal-Mart is much cheaper and actually burns better/cleaner than anything else. I travel with 2 brass alcohol stoves the size of little soda-can stoves but with more features. When one runs out of fuel, I swap in the other, so that I don't ever get tempted to refill a hot stove.

This is a very useful video for us two-door small SUV'ers. I thought I had all of the useful gadgets, but Lesa proved me wrong. That Insta Privy tent is outstanding and Lesa will be getting some "pennies" from Amazon when I purchase the kit today. I have a two-door Jeep Wrangler and have not resolved the issue of sleeping flat without removing the front passenger seat. The Jeep seats only recline about25 degrees. I am 5'9" and need to stretch out due to arthritis. One question is: who services her Tracker? Parts? She has the first generation of the Tracker, since in 1999, new models came out. Thank you for this SUV review.

Regarding the fire pit? I like it!!! I believe she can create an interlocking grid with those hairpins. -- Lay one hairpin across with the "legs" going left-to-right -- Lay the other hairpin with the "legs" going right-to-left -- Interlace the inner "legs" (...kind of like interlocking your fingers...) That would create a 4-rod grid which could probably hold a steak or a even small pan. Notes: -- might need to cut off a *short* piece of the inner leg on each of the hairpins to allow maintaining the reach-across when interlaced and allowing the locking-hump to be engaged. [Lay them out *before* cutting so the correct ones get shortened!] -- might add a heat resistant spacer/holder to keep them securely apart/together...

Lots of great ideas, helpful that she indicated costs, too. Brilliant solutions to address basic needs on the road. Safe travels!

Wow, great organization! Glad the citronella bands help her, mine did nothing for me, or the family.

❤ Lesa is so innovative and I love to watch how people can put their camping gear and beds and everything they need to make it just right in their own vehicle. So smart thank you for sharing her rig. 😊

She is so organized and she knows just what she needs and how to use it and how to get to it. She knows how to make it all work for just a small space. I just subscribed.
