Highlights of the Women's Individual Foil Semi-Finals during the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Fencing was included for the first time at the 1896 Games in Athens, and has remained on the Olympic programme since then. The women's fencing competition entered the Games in 1924 in Paris. Today, men and women compete in individual and team events, in which three types of weapon are used: foil, epee and sabre. The foil was, at first, the only weapon used by women, until the 1996 Games in Atlanta, when women's epee was introduced. Women's sabre appeared for the first time on the Olympic programme in Athens in 2004.

The differences between the women's and men's foil matches are really outstanding. The women's is so much slower and careful, almost like epee, and the men sometimes jump out like sabreurs. I'm a beginning fencer so I don't really know what I'm talking about but it's just really interesting to me to watch.
@btr152
@btr152 4 роки тому
As a former epee fencer I would disagree that epee fencing is slower. In fact it is the fastest weapon.
@starfuldream8733
@starfuldream8733 4 роки тому
@@btr152 I think she means the matches themselves are slower, since they seem to be a bit more thought out as its happening and they don't just go head on.

You still a beginner? Probably not but I am and I agree with you on that part of differences

Announcer: "Yeah, it doesn't go much past 'counter riposte', does it?" Yeah, it does sometimes.... Every so often, you'll find yourself slugging it out in a long, drawn-out phrase... Some of the most fun fencing there is! :D "Counter-counter-counter-counter-counter-counter parry riposte".... Usually ends in an off-target hit. :P

Some of the most stressful, too, but where's the fun without the stress?

The scream shows dominance, and many fencers scream to show dominance, which can be intimidating for the opponent. It's a personal preference. Personally, I don't scream, but I know many who do

Can someone help me understand a couple of things please? 1) What happens if they cross sides'? If one person goes for an attack and they end up on the other side of the catwalk? 2) When play restarts for an incorrect hit do they go back to the middle every time?
@roy_42
@roy_42 7 років тому
It's been a while since I fenced but if I remember correctly: 1) After fencer A crosses fencer B, B gets one chance to hit A (usually the ref will just count a beat) after which halt is called. 2) they do not go back to the middle, they stay where they are but reset the spacing between themselves to the same distance as when they start from the center
@arubetosan
@arubetosan 7 років тому
1) the match still continues until being halt by the referee, and after the halt if one of them gets the right hit they won't get the score 2) no, they start straight on that place

if you remember which color is who (either red or green) then you will notice who made a score and not. You just need to focus on the colors and scores of each fencer, since it will gradually change anyways so to know who got a point.

wait what was that fencing move where you give your opponent a false sense of confidence by letting them get ahead of you by a few points then change it up and go full skill in the final bit of time..
