Рік томуI'm back!! Sorry I haven't been very active on here recently. I had some time away, but I'm now back in the workshop and will be bringing awesome videos every week.
Dad and I were cutting logs for the winter when he noticed the amazing spalting inside this piece of Ash. I kept it to one side until I could figure out what to do with it.
The bowl has been sanded to 1500 grit and finished with 3 coats of Danish oil. Let me know what you think of the design! I couldn't have done it without the Axminster 400mm Button Jaws, link below.

Yes, I'm aware that wearing gloves while woodturning is considered an unsafe practise. The gloves I wear are tight fitting and don’t have any loose threads. I wear them for the protection of my skin. This is a risk that I am willing to take, however I am still very conscious of the potential danger and I do not touch any spinning parts of the lathe. DO NOT do anything you don’t feel comfortable doing.

So simple, so stunning. The dark grain in the wood is beautiful. I take my hat off to you. I can't sing an d couldn't carry a note in a bucket I can't draw and would make a stick man unrecognisable. My creative skills in wood or any other material are nonexistent, but I know what I like in music and art, and I applaud your skills.

I watched this again. This is just so beautiful. The spalting is freaking amazing. I would love to have a set of 3 pieces, all different sizes. Even a tray or perhaps a goblet would be cool. 🙂

I do so love a good spalting! Seriously, there is so much going on that it almost looks like sheet music for a symphony. But the best thing about it, was that it had enough remaining integrity to be finished and survive, and it looks great.

Good seeing you, hope you are well. The grain and spalting are perfect and the shape of course is different, but nice. I imagine for obvious reasons, (to me that is), would be perfect for fresh fruit. God Bless!

@@busettychandra Hi! Spalting is just a fault line between two fungal colonies, that start to breakdown the wood, it doesn't weaken the wood if only left a short time. Eventually it would eat the wood away and increase decay. What was your opinion of the rounded, wobble bottom 🤔 ? 😃🪵👍

It's a very interesting bowl. McDonald's here in australia - Maccas - as they are known to some, brought out a glass tumbler with an unusual shape and a protrusion on the bottom of it which meant that when filled with liquid, that it would resist spillage. It wobbles around but the inward curve of the top means that water physics stop the tumbler from spilling liquid. Your bowl reminded me of this tumbler. It is a nicely turned piece, excellent wood grain! 😊👍

Some beautiful spalting in that bowl! And those button jaws are huge, they would not even fit on my lathe 😂. I'm guessing you left the base of the bowl thicker so it would not topple over. Thanks for sharing, Mike
