Workable Fixative or Final Fixative - Which One to Use?

There are all kinds of fixatives and brands of fixatives out there to choose from! Fixatives for drawings, paintings, pastels, charcoal/graphite, workable and permanent, Krylon, Sennelier, Lascaux, Grumbacher, Blick, Spectra, and on and on... it can be really confusing!
In this video, I test out workable and permanent fixative - and demonstrate surprising results in both graphite and vine charcoal!

I have used both for decades. workable does a great job between layers of graphite, charcoal and pastel especially when the paper/board surface does not accept any more. Then after I have finished I add a final coat of workable allowing it to set and dry well followed by the permanent. And as and added protection to UV I add a mate varnish to my portrait drawings.

Yes, workable DOES help the paper feel "toothy" again if you've worn it down with pressure/compression. So true!

Well I worked for around 200 hours on a tiger in colour pencils. to get the whiskers in I used krylon workable fixative and it’s totally destroyed my drawing. All that work gone. I will never use krylon again. I couldn’t stop it flaking off and taking the colour from under it with it. I only used very light pressure but nothing could stop it flaking off. I’m glad I’ve found out now how bad this fixative is.

Hello! I'm wondering what's the best fixative to use if you wanna go over waterproof India ink, so you can add watercolor?

Hmm since I’m not a regular user of India ink myself I don’t have a ready answer for you. What I would suggest is read the labels of the fixatives you are considering and see what materials they are made for. Once you select one, test it on a sample of India ink with watercolor over it to see if it works as you wish. My basic understanding of fixative is that it is for dry media- not wet media. And my memory of India ink is that it is permanent when dry- though you’ll need to research that to be sure. Good luck!🍀
