The 4, 5, 6, 8 setting isn't for how toasted you want it :). Its for how thick the toast is... its common for bread here in Japan to be sold as 4 / 5 / 6 / 8 cut.. meaning that is how many slices you get per loaf. Higher numbers meaning you get more slices so the the individual slice is thinner. Given how thin the slice of bread you guys were toasting.. hope you had it on the 8 setting.

Haven't seen anybody else comment on this. The premium bread wasn't as dark because it probably has less added sugar in the dough. You will see the same effect with a french bread that has 0 sugar versus a store bought loaf or a richer dough.

The cheaper toaster heats with way higher temperature(because it's open design, if heated to slow the bread will dry out), the water in the bread's outer layer burned so quickly, so you can't see the vapor. While the expensive one heat bread with both infrared and surface contact, it's even and calculated. Perhaps with some timing program.

I'm pretty sure the numbers on the Japanese toaster actually refer to the thickness of the bread - I was so confused when i bought bread there because the bread slices were so thick, then I realized the "4" "6" "8" on the bags referred to the thickness (that or number of slices, I can't remember, I think the 4 was the thickest?"

The short cable on the cheap toaster is actually mandated by the Canadian Electrical Code. I own the "Breville Long Slot Toaster - BTA830XL", which in USD$179.95 currently, and I bought it in 2019 for CAD$159.56. I bought this toaster because it has a LONG slot for more artisanal breads, or just more toast in general (it was for my rye bread), but it also does frozen bread, and bagels really nicely. It is motor driven instead of Spring Driven with an Electromagnet, so I don't have to worry about suicidal toast tendencies. Some people dislike this toaster cuz it makes a semi-loud beep when it's done instead of the loud clang of a cheaper toaster....I really like my toaster, it gets the job done, and it does it well =3

Bought this toaster a year ago. I really enjoy eating toast from it without putting anything else to the bread. Recommended buy!! But important: As much better the bread is, as much better the result is after toasting it it this way. The toaster was a few bucks cheaper back then, but it is worth it.

I have a Dualit 4 slice toaster which is pretty expensive as toasters go but it works more or less like a regular toaster. 1 slice at a time is silly, unless you're sticking one of those giant crumpets in it.

Did you use a step-down converter for the Japanese toaster? It is rated for 100V not 120V. You will trip the heat fuse and create overheating delays before the next toast.

use a regular wide pan that you already have put 2 plain slices of wheat or white bread in brown for 1 second on both sides . butter is optional !!
